2013-2014 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

Just curious, how do you guys know which days are "decision days"?
Someone posted how they make decisions in last year's thread. Decision days are Saturdays at 1am EST. I had counted four weeks from the last decision day. But I think starting in Jan there will be one every two weeks.

Is that from last years thread? I interviewed at the beginning of October and I'm starting to feel very nervous.

WashU normally has a lot of movement on their wait-list so I wouldn't be discouraged! Interviewed early Nov and still no news yet

yeah it's info from last year's thread. Although their overall acceptance "timeline" seems all over the place, so I wouldn't worry just yet

Throwing this plug back out there, but if you have any questions for current students please feel free to ask them here! I'm a first year and I believe there may be a few other students (including some more experienced than me) that check this thread.

I have a question for upper-year students 🙂

How long do you have to prep for Step 1? Did you find it was enough time?

Also… WashU has a reputation for being super competitive/intense… do you find that this is true, or do students work together and genuinely try to help each other? I can see how they might work together in first year, when it's P/F, but what about in second year?

How is the focus on student wellness? Is there a high rate of student burnout compared with other schools? (I realize that might be hard to answer)

Thanks!!! I look forward to visiting for Second Look!

I got a preinterview snail mail rejection today. Complete end of Augustish, I live in the northeast. LizzyM 72, this was a reach for me.

Haha that's actually really freaky considering my situation is pretty much exactly the same as urs (0.04 off ur 4.0 😛). Canadian applicant here too, though I go to WashU, so we get a slight advantage (a.k.a. guaranteed interview 🙂)

Good luck in the app process!

I do not think that this is still true (if it ever was).

After talking to the third and fourth years I can tell you that the environment is not cut throat.

Grades during second year are based off a percentile - so if the threshold is set at 90 for honors, and everyone in the class gets a 90+, then everyone receives honors. Every school in the country has grades for clinical years, so we are no different in that respect.

Regarding Step 1 prep time, there are 4 weeks following exams dedicated solely for the exam. But like the MCAT, you're not studying for just a few weeks. Most people study for months.

I do not think that this is still true (if it ever was).

I heard I believe from Dean Chung from one of the sessions that she gave a year or two ago that this was what they practiced at the time. As of now, I'm no longer sure whether this is still the case. I personally have gotten an interview, but it is much later in the year. I believe for most (or at least many) WashU students applying they generally have the interviews later on since travel arrangements are so much easier. Whether or not they still give interviews to all the students applying, I don't believe it's still happening either judging from what I heard from friends.

yeah, I go to WashU too and I know a ton of people that applied that haven't gotten interviews...and those getting interviews now from WashU (I had mine a few weeks ago) are getting calls and getting asked to come in that week or so. Our class if pretty competitive/intense (thats what a first year from wustl said about the undergrad class of 2014), so you may need more that great grades to get an II or accepted as a wustl student this year. So I think that myth might've been true in the past, but it's not now.

I apologize if this has already been covered, but do we know how many interview dates are still available?

I got an II last week (complete late Oct), and the last date available for me was Feb. 13th. Good luck to all who are still waiting!

Not sure if this is a complete or an accurate answer but when I went online to pick an interview date last Friday, they only had 1 date available.

any chance we can expect to hear back this friday?

Probably -- given their Friday at 1AM pattern -- so yes, but I feel like (*cough* know that) other people on this thread have better prediction skillzzz than I, hahah.

Does Wash U have a set schedule in which they get back to you, or is it rolling where you may not hear back until May? I interviewed Jan 16

I think they said you will hear in April at the latest. Committees are organized by region so I think it really depends on where your undergrad is/when your committee meets to when you find out.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread for this (1st sdn post 🙂), but would anyone be willing to trade for a Feb. 5th interview date? Anything the following week of the 10th would be great and very much appreciated!

Just was utterly surprised to receive an acceptance (via phonecall) from Wash U! Honestly, I thought they'd passed me over when I didn't hear in the earlier wave of acceptances. I now have an unexpected glowing feeling. 🙂

Edit: Since someone might ask, I interviewed 10/7.

I remember from the financial aid presentation that there is a relatively large number of merit awards given by WashU. Does anyone know when these might be given out? Related to this, would it happen before or after we provide FAFSA info?

did anyone else get the email about extending the deadline for the women's scholarship?

Pretty sure I've been waitlisted. I had a fantastic interview here in early nov., but haven't heard back since. Oh well. Keep waiting, I guess.

I received a full-tuition scholarship offer back in December, so it seems they are offered on a rolling basis.

Congrats! That's awesome!

Thanks! I was absolutely floored when I got the call.

Did it come with the offer of admission?

No; I was accepted in mid-November and got the scholarship offer in late December. When the Dean called he told me the scholarship committee had just met, so I imagine the committee meets at various times throughout the cycle and extends offers at those times.

The Olin Fellowship for Women gives two or three full tuition scholarships to the medical school each year, but that requires an application that was due last week. For those who had trouble with the new online system they're using, the deadline was extended until the problems could be figured out, but I don't think you can start it now. WUMS itself gives about 15 full to majority tuition scholarships to accepted students, and this is based on merit and does NOT require further applications. Other forms of financial aid are provided through federal student loans, etc.

Speaking generally in years past they have awarded merit scholarships at a range of dates. I know of at least one individual in the past awarded a full tuition scholarship during December of his application cycle. Others have received full and partial scholarships in May, if not later.

One liner - there's no way to predict with complete certainty when these will be awarded. Fill out your FAFSA regardless just to be safe!
