2013-2014 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Speaking generally in years past they have awarded merit scholarships at a range of dates. I know of at least one individual in the past awarded a full tuition scholarship during December of his application cycle. Others have received full and partial scholarships in May, if not later.

One liner - there's no way to predict with complete certainty when these will be awarded. Fill out your FAFSA regardless just to be safe!
Thanks for your insight. And I will definitely be filling out the FAFSA no matter what.

II via email this morning! 3.6+, 36+.

There was no information about scheduling a date and the secondary website doesn't appear to have changed. Do I need to call to schedule a date?

Congratulations! When I was offered my interview, I was told to call 314-362-6852

Congrats! Do you mind answering what dates were available?

Also, does anyone know when WashU interviews until? For some reason, I can't find that info online anywhere...

Rejected via snail mail at some point over the past couple of days, I was out of town. Good luck to everyone else, St. Louis is an awesome city!

Wow!! Definitely in shock! Just received a II! Does anyone have any idea if seats are still available or is it a interview for waitlist type deal? Excited Regardless 🙂

Sure - dates were 2/10, 2/14, 2/17, 2/18, 2/19.

Shot in the dark, but does anyone with the Monday, 2/17 date want to potentially trade for another date? I have off from work that day and my employers already hate me for missing so much work.

Thanks for considering!!

Anyone?? This may be my only shot at getting out of work to go!

So, in the acceptance packet there was an Information Release form, giving permission for Wash U to release our school names, majors, email address and interview day photo to faculty, staff, current students and other accepted students. Just curious, but does anyone know what they're planning to do with this?

No idea, but I filled it out and sent it back. I figure it's harmless.

Bit the bullet and took a different date. Do you get a confirmation email when you schedule?

Also, I won't be attending the pizza party or breakfast due to travel times, does this look bad on my part?

I got in without going to either.

No one that decides anything will know or care if you go to the breakfast/dinner.

We have the pizza party and breakfast to keep you guys well fed, answer your questions, and make you feel comfortable. No hard feelings if you can't make it!

Just finished the interview day here and liked it a lot. I love how many students we got to talk to, we were outnumbered by friendly students at every event and got to meet students at all different stages of med school, which I haven't gotten to do at other schools. We also got one on one personal tours. Thanks to all the wusm students who welcomed us!

I know they at least send a list of names, schools, and majors to current students and faculty for every interview week in case one of them knows you or attended/taught at your school. There's a significant amount of free time for attending lectures and meeting with current students, and this allows current students to contact you if they want to say hi.

Pizza party is only hosted by current students, and they don't take attendance. Same with breakfast, though admissions gives you a voucher to use. Doesn't count against you at all!

Does anyone know why WashU has a 4 tier grading system (Honors, HP, P, F) + internal rankings (so even if everyone gets Honors, you will still be ranked) in year 2 as opposed to Pass/Fail? Also, why do they act like it's pass/fail in year 1 when they keep internal rankings (top 25%, top 50%, etc.), kinda defeats the purpose of pass/fail. That was one thing I didn't like; MS1's seemed very stressed out when I was there.

It has been explained to me that residency programs want to know the ranking of students at a given medical school. It's a question with no answer if the medical students are truly unranked. Therefore, it's advantageous to go to a medical school that has internal rankings so when you're looking to match you can get into your top choices. Don't just take my word for it, though. Keep asking around!

Regarding the stress: I'm definitely less stressed than I was in undergrad and I think the rest of my classmates would agree with me. Maybe it was the sample size or an exam week? If you have any specific questions feel free to message me too!

How does the internal ranking work in a P/F system (for MS1)? Is the internal ranking only based on the grade? Does it take into consideration of research/publications/volunteer etc.? Thanks.

That I honestly do not know, but it should be strictly course grades. Things like research and volunteering would be good for the next level but I assume are not included for this purpose. Ranking becomes more obvious during the clinical years that carry the most weight.

This is assuming you receive a high rank, hence our suspicion of added stress.

Grades and rankings in the pre-clinical years just seem unnecessary and indefensible. That was the only thing I disliked about the school. I hope the incoming class finally gets them to change that.

What time does the interview day end?

Depends, I was all done by 1PM but some people (~30%) have an additional afternoon interview. I think those people are done by 2:30 or 3PM at the latest

I don't want to get into an extended debate but I'll just say that residency programs typically don't care about pre-clinical grades as long as you pass your classes. They care about Step 1. So whether you go to a P/F or graded preclinical program probably doesn't make a difference. I would also recommend considering the clinical education you're going to receive. For example, our fourth year curriculum is entirely elective. This gives you extensive freedom to best prepare yourself for your personal needs prior to the next step.

If you're still not sold my advice would be to contact current students. It's my opinion that we are not that stressed and really enjoy WashU, but don't just take my word for it. Some time after you are accepted admissions should sent out a list of students and their emails. Shoot them a message to see what they have to say. Come to Second Look, too. You'll have the chance to meet tons of students and see what the life of a WashU med student is really like. Plus St. Louis is a great city.

If there's anything else I can talk about then please let me know

It's only indefensible if it doesn't work. Some people need grades and rankings to get motivated, some people are entirely self-motivated and realize passing is all you really need for the classroom portion (as long as you do well enough to do well on Step 1). The grading system supports both kinds of motivation, and my impression is that it is not THAT difficult to pass and do well. If interviewing or accepted, I would talk to third or fourth years rather than students still in the classroom because the clinical portion of time in school is so much more important to both class rank and experience overall. That's true for any school.

Addition: Hindsight is 20/20 for third and fourth years, they can truthfully tell you how the classroom portion went and how studying for Step 1 and the time allowed by the school went. Just imagine asking yourself while studying for your most difficult exams in undergrad how bad it is, and how you feel about it now. Probably very different (at least it is for me haha).

Would love an opinion on this too if anyone has any info

Status change was first, then letter, and then call.

I appreciate it! I interviewed 4 weeks ago on Tuesday and haven't heard a peep. Good to know they hit you from so many angles haha.

Just FYI, I interviewed in October and did not hear a peep until mid-January.

Does anyone know when we get more info about and when we can start applying for financial aid?

I'm unclear on how Wash U handles admissions. It meets based on geographical location of applicant?

From last year's thread:
I referred to 5 years of previous threads, and it looks like the committee meets every 2 weeks on Fridays starting mid-January. so mid Jan, late Jan, mid Feb, late Feb. I think in 2009 and 2010 there were some acceptances released on January 29, February 12, and February 26ish, but I referred to so many I forget which year it was. There were some reported on January 26 this year, so I'm thinking February 9 and February 23 seem likely for people to hear back. I guess 12am CST will confirm whether this holds precedent to previous years! otherwise, maybe February 16 and March 2 may be the days. mid-March is when everyone not accepted will hear about waitlist/rejections post-interview. we can safely assume that it will be tonight and the 23rd, or the 16th and the 2nd, so look out for reported acceptances tonight!

Last year the last batch of acceptances was 2/23; they waitlisted and rejected everyone else on 3/7. If this year follows past years' patterns, the remaining decision dates will be 2/14, 2/28, 3/14. I suspect 3/14 will be the WL/R doomsday, so there are only two Acceptance Fridays left.

WashU, will you be my Valentine?

just got an interview and my options were feb 27, march 3, and march 4 - are all of these just going to be opportunities to interview for the WL/rejection? i'm just not sure if this interview is worth it... thoughts?

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember some of the students I spoke with when I interviewed saying that a decent amount of their class came from the waitlist. So even if you do go to the interview and end up waitlisted, you could still end up matriculating in the fall. I'd say the interview is worth it, but that's just my two cents.

Edit: although I have no idea if interviewing now means you are interviewing for the waitlist.

The number I remember is right around 50% of the class was off the wait list

Encouraging stuff... but I think the more relevant statistic is what percentage of the waitlisted students are ultimately taken off. I was pretty disappointed when my interviewer told me at the end of my interview that outright acceptances are quite hard to pull off at this stage.
