2014-2015 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got a wrong # call from the 314 area code. Flipped out. Back to studying for finals. 🙁
Same thing happened to me like 2 months ago and when i saw the call I was like..."OMG THIS IS IT! This is it!!!"

YA but it wasn't. Lol totally sux...

Withdrew from WashU today and I can confirm that Dean Ratts is the sweetest. 🤢
There is really something revealing in the way people behave when they are under no obligation to be nice. I am so glad to hear that Dean Ratts is just as fine as I had thought. Hope you will be happy and successful, @Dinitrophenol!

It was heartbreaking, but I withdrew 🙁. I did not get confirmation though and I emailed two days ago. Is anyone else in the same boat?
For waitlisted applicants (which may not apply for you) once you press a checkbox in your online portal that allows you to withdraw manually, you get a confirmation on the site that says no further contact will be made.

I was accepted, but I emailed again today and they confirmed they got it! I felt bad, it was hard enough to send the withdrawal email once! I got so invested in WashU during the application process but got into a Hail Mary of a school and will be attending there. Best of luck to everyone matriculating! I know I'll be happy where I'm going but I'll have a little bit of envy of you guys!

@iheartvolleyball , congratulations and best of luck. I have the same regrets about having to give up some schools to attend another. We do really become attached.

Anybody know if they're still making calls off the waitlist this week?

Being offered a last-minute merit scholarship in addition to significant need-based aid made Wash U even harder to turn down. It looks like I'll be heading to St. Louis this fall as well.

This app cycle was a crazy ride. It's a relief to finally have definite plans for next year.

Yay! Congrats.
And word.

Hey all, accepted off the waitlist and would like to attend! Just a quick question for anyone else, is there anything to do besides just wait for the acceptance package in the mail? anything to fill out online or anything? I am a little hesitant to drop my other acceptance with nothing except a phone call so far.

I called the Office of Admissions asking about this today, actually! Once you get the email with the copy of the acceptance letter, reply to that with your intent to attend. They'll add that to your file while they wait for you to receive the physical packet with the forms. If you haven't gotten the email yet just wait I guess, haha.

Alright, thanks for the heads up. My last bit of pre-med paranoia kicked in, and I'm too used to everything being done online these days lol.

Congrats! That's so awesome! Were you accepted MD or MD/PhD?

Ha humbled? That's when you don't get into medical school and you have to reapply next year. Getting into WashU is justifiably ego-boosting.

I always wondered about people commonly claiming to be humbled by receiving some kind of award or recognition. Is it because they want to be humble and not arrogant while accepting their award or recognition? Is it an instance of people just saying humbled, when they mean honored? Or is there some sense I can't figure out in which being honored is actually humbling?

I guess "settling" for WashU could be humbling if you thought you were a shoo-in for Harvard, but they never called. Ha ha.

Consideration of the sort of students and teachers I will be in the company of at WashU is humbling to me! My dictionary seems to agree haha:

New Oxford American Dictionary said:
Humble
verb [ with obj. ]
lower (someone) in dignity or importance

Fair enough.

I guess you could maybe see it the same way when receiving any award or recognition. That it's intimidating or humbling to be brought into a group of truly amazing people?

Exactly! Knowing all your peers are high-caliber and that (because of that) all your superiors expect that degree of excellence. It's pretty intimidating and a weird juxtaposition to trying to feel like you've earned your spot in the class haha.

@jared_the_great and @gettheleadout, I think that the fact that we think of "humble" as having a negative connotation speaks volumes about our society. When we hear "humble," many minds go immediately to the concept of "being humbled" or forced to "eat humble pie." Humility and humiliation are very different. The poet Cowper said, "Knowledge is proud that it knows so much; wisdom is humble that it knows no more." Nehru said, "Let us be a little humble. Let us suspect that the truth may not lie entirely with us." To me, humble is not synonymous with groveling or being brought low. It is appreciating how blessed we are. "When true simplicity is gained / To bow and to bend we will not be ashamed. . ." Anyway, that's my take.

Humbled by your writing as always.

Glad to see people excited to be coming here! As a very soon-to-be graduate, I can tell you, it's a great place to train. As always, I'm happy to answer questions if people want to know things while still deciding or planning the coming year. Just post here (and tag me) or PM me. 🙂

Awww. . . @FriendlyFH! Don't make me blush! :shy: Too much praise and I will lapse into brag-obnoxiousness and lose all my humility points! Like the amazing Mohammed Ali, floating like a butterfly, stinging like a bee, proclaiming, "It is hard to be humble when you're as great as I am!"

Hey guys I am a current M1 at WashU. Congrats to everyone who got in, looking forward to seeing some of you next year, and best of luck to everyone else! In case any of you are still on the edge, check out this video that will hopefully convince you that this is an awesome place and that med school really isn't all that bad:

Now I'm worried... I don't think my dance skills are quite up to par based on what I see here. :nailbiting:

When do we think the next major waitlist movement will occur?
I've been wondering the same thing.

On a side note, Carly Rae Jepson's song keeps reminding me of Dr. Ratts..."i've never met you, and this is crazy but here's my number, so call me maybe. All the other med schools try to chase me, but here's my number, so call me maybe."

Is major WL movement really over now? 🙁 It's a bit strange that there are so few reports here compared to previous years..

Yeah, it's weird. Many of the top 10-15s (except NYU) haven't had as much movement on these threads compared to other years. Looks like Hopkins hasn't gone to the waitlist yet, maybe others are moving slower?

It may have to do with the movement of the old May 15th deadline to April 30th... but you would have think we would have seen movement by now. It is quite strange.

Just got off the waitlist now. Idk if I will take the spot. Penn just accepted me today and offered me a scholarship. I have a week to decide
Wow! Great choices and difficult choice! I hope that you are very fulfilled by the education you choose, wherever it is!

Correct me please if I'm wrong, but I thought moving the deadline to April 30 would mean more wait list movement sooner. Or is there something I'm missing?

I just feel it's really strange the opposite is happening.

Indeed the opposite seems to be happening so far, others have said there is less movement on other wait lists too. Hopefully it is just taking it's time. ..

I am starting to doubt that the actual movement is being slow.. It could be that people who got in off the waitlist just don't report as much as previous years..Or for some reason schools don't rely on WL that much this year..
