2015-2016 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Accepted yesterday by email!! :soexcited: Interviewed first week of Feb. Good luck to those still waiting, and may the odds be ever in your favor! 🙂

Wow! That was a fast turnaround! Congratulations on your acceptance. I also interviewed in early Feb and am waiting anxiously for a decision.

Just got an II - would there still be seats open or would I be interviewing for a spot on the waitlist?

I feel that this has been discussed ad nauseum, but 1) Many seats in the 85-90 person class have been filled already, so your chances are "less" than someone who interviewed early in the cycle, in the sense that you are competing for less seats. 2) Dartmouth is forthcoming about their process and explain during interview day that many applicants, even early interviewees, won't receive a decision until all files/interviews have been completed. Obviously, very competitive candidates can be accepted a lot earlier, but the more "mid-tier" group won't hear back until later to allow comparison of all interviewees.

Sorry for bringing up a well-discussed topic, but thank you for your reply!

II! Canadian. Complete way back in July. I''m guessing my chances aren't that great since I'm receiving one so late in the cycle and I've been complete so long?
Regardless, I think it's a fantastic school, I'm excited to have the opportunity to interview here 🙂

Also have an II and trying to decide if it's worth the travel money and begging for days off work so late in the season.
I've seen you on other school threads, and I think you would love Dartmouth given the ones you liked already!!

If any current students or those that have interviewed have time, could you post a summary of pros and cons about Dartmouth and any other relevant info ?? Sorry if I've missed this

Pros: happiest med school on earth, awesome school, insane match list, get to travel the country for clinicals. Oh and good skiing near Hanover.

Cons: years 1-2 in Hanover. But seriously, would you have time to go out anyway?

Can u pls elaborate on the "happiest med school on the planet" part.

The reason I am asking is that I am torn Bc I really loved Dartmouth and the people there. But, how should one factor that in when comparing a higher ranked school? It's unfortunate that ranking seems to play a big factor in future career prospects.

I compared the match list. Dartmouth has a match list that is beyond out of the league of UW, which is #1 primary care and #6 in research.

But Dartmouth was the most collaborative and friendly of all the schools I interviewed at. UW was a miserable interview experience. The tour guide recommended we not go there.

Also rank doesn't matter as much if you don't want to go into academics or research.

Current student here...

The people are a major factor as to why I think I am a happy student. The faculty who are here love being at Dartmouth, and the faculty at the hospital are really committed to being clinical educators. I think there is also just a different vibe/pace in the medical school/hospital here: it is more laid back, more collaborative, and less cut throat and overstressed. In comparing other schools/hospitals I have been to, there are not many egos at the hospital, and even the ones with egos are approachable. Sure, you could argue it might be the most realistic kind of prep for the 'real world' being in this super supportive environment, but I really like it and think it's helped me do things I never thought I would do as a medical student. There are Dartmouth-run away rotations if that environment part is a big concern for you.

If you're worried about your career prospects with choosing Dartmouth over a higher ranked school, you might be too obsessed with rankings. I, along with other classmates preferred Dartmouth over other 'higher ranked' schools, and I think it had a lot had to do with fit since I don't think the career prospects is an issue (I could be biased though 🙂 ). Sure, ranking for research is not as robust as the other heavy hitters, but I really don't think that is impacting me very much as a student because I have encountered several research opportunities thus far. They just opened up a new translational research building this year, so that is taking off.

I found a potential non-biased source for a ranking if that is your concern: http://medical-schools.startclass.com/. This utilizes data from several sources, and what is probably bumping this up is the student/faculty ratio as well as the scholarships available for students since we have a pretty low debt average as well. Puts Dartmouth ahead of several schools you would consider to be 'higher ranked'.

Anyone know approximately how many students interview per session?
I kinda wanna meet the people I'm interviewing with. Ice breaker online!

I think they aim for about 15-20 per session.

I love that website and the side by side comparisons!

Also received a late II here on Sunday. I am pretty sure I will be declining, but just want to think about it a little.

Oh I know that I would LOVE Dartmouth, but Idk that I can turn down a scholarship that I have at another school. So many decisions....
Maybe you'll get one at Dartmouth too? If you would love to go there, even the smallest bit, I'd go to the interview!

What's the best way to get there? Fly into Boston? Please advise! I'm travel-inept lol
I found it cheapest and most convenient and fun to fly to Logan, and rent a car to drive up to Hanover. Once you're out of the city, there's basically no traffic and it's a beautiful drive. Car at $35 per day was much cheaper than the cape air ticket!!

Probably good idea to rent the car if you want to drive around the area. What I personally did was fly into Boston and take the Dartmouth coach (40 dollar trip to the Dartmouth area, bus has wifi and small snacks!). Same thing for the way back.

Oh and don't forget to either bring quarters or get a car with an EZPass for tolls! There's a few

anyone interviewing this thursday? Any advice for a California boy driving on snowy/icy highways for the first time?
They're used to it in the northeast, so unless there's a storm right as you get there, there should be no snow or ice on the freeway and main roads. Check with the rental company just in case to see if you might need chains at all, and watch a YouTube video on how to put chains on.

I've actually driven in snow and used chains, but only on relatively slow moving mountain roads. And I've seen some videos.. my fiancee just sent me one with cars sliding uncontrollably into each other and everything set to nutcracker 😀

I'll need to call the rental company.

Thanks!

thanks -- what's the cost of the polls usually? do i need like a bunch ? LOL

also - i'm debating flying into boston and driving vs flying directly to lebanon.. i'm kinda wondering if with the cost of a rental (would prefer rental over bus if I was doing this), it may all just be a wash.. thoughts ?
