2015-2016 Duke University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha, I have zero familiarity with pokemon, so probably not going to jump on that bandwagon 😛
But it's the II bandwagon! This is scientifically proven fact from last year's Duke thread! Isn't that a good wagon to be on

i'm glad you guys finally found out the reason why i chose abra 😛 hoping to blossom into an Alakazam soon haha

Holy cow... I am scared lol

Edit: submitted July 15th, that's why I'm scared

Edit #2: still need to change avatar

Mr. Richard Wallace has retired?!

I hope he is in good health and enjoying his retirement.

Any MSTP II's yet?

Hey! I'm an MSTP applicant. I've received almost all of my secondaries (excluding Vanderbilt, which I know screens heavily). I haven't gotten any IIs yet or heard of any MSTP people who have. Do you have an II from any of your schools?

Look in the physician scientist thread. ...It looks like we get IIs later than regular md applicants. But, I still keep checking my email anyway!

No worries -- I have been checking there as well! I'm pretty neurotic at this point so I am checking everywhere I can 😉 I have also noticed that we do seem to get IIs later and haven't heard of any as well, but I also keep checking my email and asking around! Thanks for the tips and help!

I'm having trouble with the "What will challenge you the most in your career as a health care provider when you have to deal with people unlike yourself " essay.

Any general thoughts on topics to write about? So far I've thought about cheap prescriptions/life style change for low SES patients and being sensitive to culture (e.g., Jehovah's witnesses and transfusions).

I was born and raised in China and came to the U.S. only since college. Yet, I'm planning to practice medicine in the U.S.. In that case, how can I approach the question "What improvements do you think might make the described community better?" Can I talk about international cooperation kind of things?

I think it means improvements to the community you grew up in. The place you lived before you came here. Talk about how to improve that.

Still struggling on the "what will challenge you most about working with different people" question. That's a tough one.

question for my fellow pokemon (and everyone else). what are people putting for the "additional information section?" I've done the rest of the app (thank god) but I'm teetering on putting my diversity essay for additional info. I feel like that highlights some of my strengths and they aren't addressed elsewhere in the app

If you think it would, go for it. I left both the optional essays and additional information blank. Duke already has enough of my soul.

Edit: Upon double checking, I realized I included changes to my gap year plans. Just a couple of sentences though, since they've changed slightly relative to what I listed on AMCAS.

Lol I have no affiliation to the gas company and actually have a slight to severe distaste for them.
Good. It's one of the worst ones out there, if not the worst.

Alright gals and boys, I am still working on the sec. for #1, about my community, must i talk about 2 valueS? it gets long and I just wanna talk about one... did yall talk about a couple/few values?

shanks 8)

Hey guys!

So I finished my secondary a few weeks ago, and put in my request for the secondary application fee waiver on 7/6. STILL NO WAIVER! I called not once, not twice, but three times and they keep telling me that they are behind on this. Does anyone else have this problem? Did you receive a fee waiver, and if so, when did you request? I appreciate any info!

I talked about three values, but i'm sure two is fine as well! They don't have any limits but you also want to keep your sanity so I think anything over a page and a half might be excessive.

Anyone know if Duke is receptive to pre-II updates (or updates at all)?

For MSTP applicants, looks like II's will start mid-august according to website: "The MSTP admissions committee reviews applications as they are completed, and in mid-August the program will begin to issue interview invitations.."

Does anyone know if you apply for the Primary Care Leadership Track (PCLT), you are considered for that track?? Can you be accepted to Duke MD, but not the PCLT?? I really want to try applying to PCLT, because I am interested in primary care, but I'm not sure if I have enough activities that can show that I am interested in this field... thanks!

I'm in the same boat. Did you ever get an official answer to your question? I sent them an email asking about it today, so I'll let you know, if this is still relevant to you!

Anybody have any interview offers yet? I submitted my secondary on the 7th of July, but my mcat score wasn't back until the 21st and my advisor didn't get my com. letter in until the 23rd. I think I took their unlimited character thing too seriously because between the 5 essays (i did the optional one) I submitted them 12 pages... sue me I like to write haha. Hope that doesn't burn me in the long run, seeing how it seems everybody else wrote a lot less.

We know that interviews have been going out since 7/17. That was the first SDN reported instance so who knows about even earlier ones?
If you were only complete 7/23, there's a long road ahead before you'll know about your II status. Sit tight and go do something else to occupy your mind!
