2015-2016 Tufts University Application Thread

Congrats to all of the recent acceptances! It seems to have been silent on the II front lately. Does anyone know if/when they're done sending out invites? Still holding on after months of silence...

Wondering if they are done with II's as well?

Has anyone gotten the official email of acceptance from Tufts yet? Got the call and Dean Neumeyer said the email would be coming along and then the mail package. Just wondering if there's some delay in sending the emails or there's an issue on my own end of receiving it.

It'll probably come today or tomorrow. It's sent through the portal so if you're getting antsy, just check there. An "offer" tab will appear once they've submitted it.

Tufts pay attention too meeeeeee

Complete in late July and still no word. Anyone have any insight on tufts and late interview invites?

Was it an email or on the portal? Also do you mind sharing your completion date?

I'm not sure what URM is...if it's underrepresented minority then yes, I'm African American from NYC!

Ahh I see. Congratulations on your interview invite!! good luck!!

Oh Tufts, why do you dismiss me?! Last year they had II's through early Feb (I believe), so I guess the judgement will fall soon enough.

It was certainly a legitimate question to ask, as it does affect one's chances of obtaining interview invites and acceptances. It's documented on the AAMC website.
Actually, my experience and extracurriculars are stronger than most applicants along with my journey to even get to this point. I'd like to think the school looks at the whole applicant rather than just my race/ethnicity. I'm also pretty sure the color of my skin takes me but only so far....

Beyond that, I'm sure whoever doesn't get an interview (apply this to yourself how you see fit) wasn't solely rejected based on their race. The "Ah I see" is false confirmation.

Again, good luck to everyone applying!

No one who is educated thinks that being a minority just gives you an easy acceptance. Your stats are lower than their average and recently invited candidates, (as are mine) so I just think it was curiosity. Race doesn't define you but it definitely can affect an admissions decision, maybe not a ton but it's still a factor. So as someone who is still pre II Im extremely interested to hear about recently invited candidates and their applications. Other than that, Good luck man! It sounds like you've had a journey to medical school similar to mine so I'm rooting for you!

Tufts accepted me with a LizzyM of 64 and besides being 30, I'm pretty much white bread.

There's nothing false about it. The reality is that it does improve your chances. Nobody is interviewed or accepted based on a single factor. Obviously you still need to cover your bases with extracurriculars, etc. I'm still an applicant at Tufts, but I do realize there isn't much time left in the application cycle.

Personally, I disagree with the fact that race is a factor at all in the medical school admissions process. I don't personally think it's fair. But it is what it is.

That's certainly good to hear, in the case of Tufts anyway. I'm almost 30 myself, and am also pretty much white bread.

I wonder how admissions committees view non-traditional [GPA repair] candidates? Or re-applicants? Fortunately I made huge improvements to my MCAT(on the new MCAT) and GPA (with masters GPA), so at the very least I put myself in a good position.

I didn't say race isn't a factor. I'm saying it's not confirmation of why I was offered an interview over the next applicant. Yes, I'm black. I'm also a great candidate. The two are not synonymous.

Well, neither of us know for sure why you were offered an interview over the next applicant. It is done behind closed doors and we'll never know. What we do know is that the 10th-90th MCAT percentile for Tufts (according to MSAR) is 30-38. We also know that a 503 MCAT is 61st percentile (~27 on the old exam). If a candidate is weak in one area (eg MCAT), they'll have to be strong in other areas or have other factors going for them to gain an interview/acceptance. Is it possible that race helped your application at Tufts? Yes, it is possible. Do we know if it did or how much it may have? No, we don't. When I said "ahh I see", it was an acknowledgment that race could have been one of the factors that helped offset your lower MCAT score to help you obtain an interview invite.

When you put 7.5 years into your application (not including ec's & grades during undergrad), are a 3rd-time applicant with great stats, ec's etc that you worked your butt off for, sure it's frustrating when you realize that the medical school admissions process isn't more merit-based than it currently is.

Well, 3 times a charm 🙂.

Dude, you're just frustrated. It's understandable. Sometimes the race is not to the swift and the battle is not won by the strong. Great stats do not always translate into an acceptance. Let's just rejoice with who is rejoicing at this time. It might just be you next time!

Well, at the start of this, I asked a legitimate question of a fellow applicant. Multiple other applicants also agreed that my question was legitimate. Crassostrea virginica decided to basically judge me with the comment "so salty". I decided to explain my reasoning.

I also congratulated the fellow applicant on her interview invite and wished her good luck in my follow-up post:
"Ahh I see. Congratulations on your interview invite!! good luck!!"

Persistence, persistence, persistence. Life doesn't always go the way you plan it. You just have to do the best you can; put your best foot forward and hope for the best. At the end of the day, I hope we [those within the SDN community] all get in. This process is certainly challenging for everyone.

Would anyone mind sharing what their interview was like here? I just got an invite! What's the interview style? How many interviews do applicants do? Is it closed or open-file? Are interviews in the morning or the afternoon?

Thanks in advance!! 🙂

Congratulations!

The morning is dedicated to presentations. After lunch with current students the interviewee group will break in half-- half will head to two ~30 minute interviews, the other half will go on a tour, then switch.

One of my interviews was with a faculty member and the other was an MS4, that being said others interviewees on my day had two faculty. The interviews were clearly open file as both my interviewers had written extensive notes on my application.

Fairly conversational, nothing to stress out over! Good luck 🙂

A legitimately salty question
