2015-2016 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Could be. There's a lot of funding for scholarships that can be allotted in various ways, based on the admissions committee's discretion.

I know quite a few get offered partial tuition merit scholarships. Perhaps more than four end up with full tuition. But there is a program offering exactly four full-tuition scholarships each year. And the four recipients get announced here.

Yeah, can confirm that there are other scholarships -- I got the "distinguished student scholarship." WashU is insanely generous.

Eh... I was very confused by that as well. But the DSS and the DASP are the same scholarship. It's weird.

Sigh... so looks like we've entered the slow phase of waitlist movement at WashU? Is this how it normally is?

if their waitlist is truly unranked as they claim and they interview ~1000 people without rejecting anyone, I imagine it must be a very long list. So does that mean they go through the ENTIRE list every time they meet? :sorry:

I wouldn't say that's true. There was a big batch accepted last week. The committee needs to wait to see what all those people do before making any more moves. I'd speculate there will be another batch coming soon.

According to an adcom member on the waitlist support thread, waitlist movement tends to happen in discrete groups, not one continuous flow.

If there's another week or so without acceptances, then we may have hit the slow phase.

Does anybody knows if individual schools evaluate grades post admission the same way that AMCAS does? My UG institution does not issue letter grades (Canadian), but does print a conversion chart on the back of our transcripts and that is what AMCAS went by. Senioritis took a bit of a toll on my GPA this year and it has got my neuroticism cranked up to 11.

How bad are we talking? I think they do check to make sure you didn't completely give up your last semester.

If I calculate it the way AMCAS did I dropped from a 4.0 last year to a 3.7 this year. I'm just worried that WashU won't calculate it that way. According to my institution standard's I made mostly A's with a couple of B's, but the percent needed to get an A at my school is much lower than what is needed to get an A at most American colleges.

Friend are you for serious right now

I definitely deserved that. My neuroticism has me imagining Dean Ratts looking at my final transcript and being like "lol what is this?". There's just no telling if they'll look at my grades the way AMCAS does and that's what's got me worried.

They're probably super busy with graduation and that's why they didn't send out any acceptances this week! I'm sure they will send some out this upcoming week!

~Stay relaxed and positive!~

I can confirm that there are more than 4 full tuition scholarships.

Sent an update a week or so ago via the web interface, haven't gotten a response.. probably should've sent it to admissions and dean rates directly :/ .. should I try again?

If you used the web interface, they probably got the message because I remember getting a response saying it would be added to my application.

missed a call from Dean Ratts this afternoon!!

edit: Accepted!!! Given three days to decide.
Congratulations wow. Just want to make sure if they also update the portal. Sometimes, my phone doesn't get ring (AT&T 🙁 ), and voicemail doesn't get activated. Thanks

no change to the portal as of now. I'm sure they would email if they're unable to reach someone by phone.

how long after the acceptance call did most folks receive confirmation by mail/email or see the portal update?

Last batch of WL acceptances was two weeks ago on Monday/Tuesday. Seems like they may do these early in the week? Hopefully there will be more one or two weeks from now.

In my case there was no email (WUSM has the most archaic admissions set up I've seen of the bunch). They send a snail mail packet, which arrives within the week. I called the office and was told to sign and scan the papers and send it as attachment in an email to wmscoa. Then send off the snail mail packet. If it doesn't arrive in time, which mine did not for unknown reasons, just send them an email with your intent to matriculate and then call the office for next steps. Congrats!

No email or portal update to confirm acceptance here. I'm on the west coast and I got my packet by snail mail a week later.

Thanks y'all! Super odd that they send no email... I've definitely come across more antiquated systems (Jefferson comes to mind), but Wash U holds it's own in the contest for least sensible admissions process.

edit: The "waitlist response" tab on the portal vanished!

Just wanted to share this tid bit for anyone who might be accepted between now and 7/1. You'll likely have the good sense to ask for more than three days to decide, but if you're hesitant, know that the traffic rules are on your side!

...It technically breaks AMCAS traffic rules (minimum of 5 business days until 30 days prior to medical school, at which point it can be reduced to 2 business days). The traffic rules may be more like strong suggestions though. https://www.aamc.org/download/364264/data/2014trafficrules.pdf

Broke my heart a little bit, but declined the acceptance today. Hope it goes to one of you lovely folks!

I'm guessing they didn't offer too much financial support... I think this will be my major concern if I ever get off their waitlist.

I had this problem last night. WashU didn't match my other scholarship and now I have to pick between the school I want and the school that would save me like ~$200K

I was just accepted today off the waitlist and I have the same issue. Any idea which way you're leaning/how you are going about making this huge decision? I am completely lost as to what I should do.

I ended up choosing WashU. There was a dramatic difference in matches between the two schools. WashU's match list was unbelievable, while the other school looked like it closed a lot of doors for their students. Also, WashU has a really good department in the residency program I want (Rad Onc) while the other school doesn't even have one. So I figured it's worth the extra money.

I got the long-awaited call from Dean Ratts on June 1st, and I am incredibly honored and excited to be joining the incoming class of 2016 at WashU!!!

This is my first time posting on studentdoctor.net. I made an account because I wanted to say thank you to the people who have been posting their advice and personal experiences with the admissions process. They inspired me to keep trying and not lose hope in my waitlist position. I had already sent a letter of intent and two updates, and I thought there was nothing left I could do. However, after reading posts from previous years, I decided I had nothing to lose and I wrote WashU a second letter of intent last weekend. I can't say for sure if this had an effect, but I received the call from Dean Ratts just a few days later. I wish the best of luck to you guys and I urge you to not give up.

In case you're curious:
Interviewed: 2/17
GPA: 3.89
MCAT: 36

Do recently accepted people get an email or status update on the portal? My phone as been out of service for the past 3 days and I'm wondering if there's another way to check for an acceptance other than by voicemail.

There's no acceptance message on my portal, however the waitlist response option has disappeared. They also sent an acceptance offer via priority mail (no email).

Congratulations @LeLeMon ! Did you send the letter of intent to the Committee on Admissions or to Dean Ratts? Thanks.

Once you mail back your acceptance forms, the portal changes and says "Congratulations on your acceptance to Washington University School of Medicine! Your Intent to Matriculate form was received." Before then, it's just that the wait list inquiry form disappears a day or two after being accepted

@LeLeMon how much time did you have between letters? I'm scared to be annoying. Congrats on the acceptance and thanks for giving us some details about what you did!

I understand how you feel, I also struggled with finding a balance between not being annoying and not letting time slip by

Feb 17: Interview
Feb 28: 1st letter of intent (probably premature, but I was really excited about WashU after my interview)
March 31: waitlisted
April 2: 1st update
April 15: new letter of rec
May 16: 2nd update
May 30: 2nd letter of intent (very brief, only a few sentences this time)

For those of you were recently accepted, how long did it take for them to send information about getting access to email and other important accounts besides financial aid, and getting access to the Facebook group?

I know it's super quiet on this page, but don't lose hope! There's still a steady amount of waitlist movement. 6 new students joined the Facebook page this week, and a total of 14 students joined in the last two weeks

I just got an email that another school has requested my certiphi background report. I'm hoping that school is WashU. Does anyone know if this is a good sign?
