So people who have interviewed here/lived in the area/go here, can you tell me a little more about the school and what makes it unique? 🙂 I've been researching it on my own, but their website is really unhelpful/generic.

+1

Would also like to know.

Interviewed here early February, accepted yesterday. OOS. Lizzy M 78. Being on Long Island it's a nice area (sort of the rich suburban feel), but kinda far from the city. Fortunately, if you want to go to NYC there's a Long Island Rail Road stop right by the campus and its maybe a 45 to 60 min ride to Penn Station, depending on whether you go on or off peak hours. I got the feel that it was really quiet and a lot of students go home on the weekends. I had a friend who goes to SBU and he showed me around town. There are some good food options. From what I hear, a lot of the students go to Port Jefferson for the bars and restaurants. The school is undergoing some construction, like almost every other school lol. Seems like SBU grads tend to stay in the Northeast, whether that's because the school is better known there or just because they like the east coast lifestyle (lots of traffic and bitter cold). Research options are good, but there are better schools out there for research, at least in terms of MSTP students and funding. All in all, I liked the school but can't really seem to justify the high OOS tuition.

Thanks! What did they emphasize about themselves during the interview day? Is research their big thing?

Not really. I asked about the research focus and they said that it is present but not as much as some schools. Really they focus on clinical training, since they have quite a large patient base. The students seemed happy, except for the fact that the library isn't 24 hours and the student lounge was underwhelming. Straight up one of my interviewers told me that medical schools are a lot more similar than they are different, and I tend to agree with that statement. Really comes down to whether you could see yourself being a part of their community and they can see you being one of their own. Good luck in the process!

Thanks, that was really helpful! We'll see how it goes!

Yeah I got the email around 4 pm EST. 🙂

Is Stony Brook receptive to letters of intent? I'm on a handful of wait-lists including SB and already have one acceptance and would like to convey that Stony is my top pick.

I sent one and they added it to my file. I don't think it would hurt.

EDIT: I sent a letter of interest not intent but same idea.

Thanks! Did you just send is as an email, or attach it to an email or some other way?

IIRC I replied directly to the wait list email. It was sort of a combined letter of interest and me saying yes to stay on the wait list. Best of luck!

Our lounge may be crappy, but we have cable. Turns out HGTV makes a great study break. I keep telling ppl we need to stress this more on interview days.

Stop spamming all the school specific thread with the same question. Use a Google search. Ir the search function within the thread

Yes but it's kinda annoying you spamming all the threads asking the same question that you can easily Google. It's also against TOS

  1. Don’t cross-post on the forums. Just post once. Posting a question or comment in multiple forums is annoying to other members and, if flagged, may be removed as a duplicate.

I just had 8 or so notifications of your copy-pasted questions. Chances are you didn't actually search those threads for information, or look at the school websites. Opting to just spam your question may not necessarily be prohibited (I don't know), but definitely comes across as lazy. Most (I think) use this forum for stuff you can't look up on school websites. I know the answer to the question in at least one thread, but given the lack of effort on your part I'm just responding here and moving on with my day. (I was just going to ignore it but the snarky response seemed worthy of response...)

Do any current medical students or accepted students have any opinions on the program and curriculum at Stony Brook? I've been struggling to make a decision between SBU and another school (the in-state tuition makes Stony Brook hard to pass up) and would love to hear some qualities that other students really enjoy about the school

Interviewed here on 1/10, and haven't heard back since. Should I call or email the admissions committee?

You should call and kindly ask if you don't hear back soon.

In terms of the OOS tuition, one awesome thing I've learned from the students is that it's easy to establish in-state status and Stony Brook helps with this process. People pay only the first-year OOS tuition and the remaining 3 years they pay in-state tuition 🙂

Does this also apply to international students tho?

Hello, fellow International-OOS here. It is my understanding, and I am pretty sure about it, that on a student visa F-1 you will not be able to declare NYS state residency after 1 year, and thus will have to pay full tuition forever 🙁

Can confirm. Heard that during my interview and I'm accepted... saw the oos tuition in my acceptance PDF files.

Yea this is what I thought... Thanks!

Yup that's what my PDF told me too. Thanks!

When is accepted students day?

No, I didn't get in, but I was interviewed and waiting to hear back. I just need to plan in case I get an acceptance (which I hope I will).

Anyone who interviewed 2/16 or later hear back yet?

What kind of financial aid grants or scholarships do they give to out of state people? Especially economically disadvantaged people?

Maybe I didn't hear on interview day or couldn't find via search/Google, but I assume we can send a thank you letter or letters of interest/intent to the general admissions email?

Could somebody confirm? Thanks!

I sent mine to Nancy and asked her to forward my thank you emails and after a few days, she responded back saying she would do so.

It's been nearly 8 weeks since my interview. Should I inquire about my status or nah?

I think I'll email them just to make sure, but I thought it was strange how I haven't heard back even though I've submitted everything at the beginning of March. I looked on the Financial Aid website and found this graphic: Understanding the Process. It says "Medical and Dental Students" are notified of their financial aid award in mid June??? I hope that's a mistake...but I'm still betting on mid April bc it's stony
I found all of the financial info on here Financial Aid Information | Stony Brook University School of Medicine
