2016-2017 University of Texas HSC at Houston (McGovern) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats!! What was your transmission date? My lizzy m isn't nearly that high but I'm just wondering if people who transmitted first week of July are getting any serious love yet
Transmitted 5/25, but complete e-mail received 7/5.

Ahh I finally got the confirmation email today! Transmitted 06/14, complete 07/12.
Now, the wait begins... hoping Houston shows me love.

Why is there a discrepancy between transmission and completion? I thought there's no secondary?

Lol wow. I live in Dallas currently and got my first telemarketing call from a Houston number in I guess several years. What a troll. It was worst because they were silent when I picked up.

It has been 6 weeks since my application was complete and transmitted and still no confirmation email.

It took two months for me to receive the confirmation email, no worries. They're moving along!

I gotcha. I appreciate it! This is one of my top 2 schools so I'm just anxious about it! Mind if I ask your transmit date?

No problem! Yeah this school is definitely on the top of my list too. My TMDSAS was transmitted on 6/9.

As far as I know, most of the Texas schools use email for interview invites. This includes UTMB, UT HSC, Texas A&M, UT Southwestern, UTSA and Baylor.

TCOM is the only Texas school that I know calls instead.

Anyone transmit later and get a completion email? I transmitted 7/25 (but LOR not uploaded until this week). This is the only TX school (well, besides Dell...) that I haven't heard anything from yet.

Transmitted 7/7/16 and haven't gotten an email. I've checked with them several times and they made sure everything was fine. They are just busy.

Transmitted 7/11/16 and no email. I haven't checked with them at all but I figure they're super overloaded. Seems like tons of TX schools are super backed up

Also A&M secondary wtf.

EDIT: sorry transmitted 8/1/16

what's wrong with the a&m secondary?

Just had the longest writers block on it, but I'm about to submit!

I paid the fee early July for A&M and wrote the first prompt not long after that... But something about the second prompt just killed all my writing motivation. Didn't end up submitting this secondary until like six weeks later...

A&m is my only II so far haha. The one about the honor code was difficult for me to answer, and I was sure I screwed it up. Wish I could have some love from Houston though. Studying at the world's biggest medical center is insane. People come here from everywhere just to do research here.

Think about how much info A&M has about us. The personal statement, the personal characteristics essay, the optional TMDSAS essay, something that has made us appreciative of the human condition, why we will follow their honor code, and perhaps more.

Seriously. I've asked myself so many times what they must be doing with so many essays. This is on top of LORs that they read. I can't imagine what they do with so much info.

I was having writers block since I literally had written so much in the other essays. In the end, I mentioned activities I also had talked about in my PS, but in regards to how the specific honor code characteristics were involved with them.

Just so tired.

I totally get the fatigue. I was so tired out in June when I was writing my secondaries. I do feel that it can help though. I think my essays were one of the reasons I got a II at A&M instead of a UT school that doesn't require secondaries. My stats are average for most TX schools, so I felt that I could use the secondaries to add a little bit about me.

Ah yeah that's good. I think the schools that emphasize primary care like to learn more about their applicants.

I was surprised to see UTSW has a secondary though. It was cool to not have to pay to submit it though. The UT system seems to have a good endowment anyways haha.

I have a mini heart attack every time I get an email on my phone because only the account I'm using for AMCAS/TMDSAS is logged into my iPhone's gmail app, so it makes a different sound every time I get an email

I received completion email 8-3, still early to hear for interviews? Or should I be nervous?

Dang if you are nervous, I have no chance right (complete in June)? Bud, it has been 24 days! You can't be serious. You are fine!! I know you have gotten other IIs but that doesn't mean you're out of the running here already.

Can anyone PLEASE send me interview details? The website locked me out and I can't get to the details needed for interview day!

Does anyone know the official average gpa/average MCAT? I know there is information on MSAR, but that is often higher than the average, since they use the median.
Just wondering how much more competitive this is that say UTMB or UTHSCSA? I have a II from 2 TX schools so far, but I'm very MCAT heavy, and I was wondering how much emphasis was placed on both stats here. Thanks!

I know Houston is typically regarded as one of the more competitive schools in Texas aside from utsw and Baylor, as far as competitiveness goes it typically is San Antonio < UTMB < Houston

Oh gotcha! Are their average stats the same as UTSW?

From what I know, I think there are a few tiers in terms of stats: 1) Baylor, UTSW, Dell 2) Houston, Tech (Lubbock) 3) UTMB, SA, A&M 4) Rio Grande, Foster

I agree for the most part, but what makes Dell so weird is that they seem to emphasize stats a little less than UTSW and Baylor, and look specifically for mission (which I have no clue if I meet 😛)
And I think Tech is probably in the same tier as A&m in when it comes to stats from what i've read on previous Republic of Texas threads. Of course I'm waiting impatiently to hopefully get a II from there (I have very fond memories of Lubbock).

How is your app cycle going??
