2018-2019 Charles R Drew/UCLA

Hi everyone!

I'd appreciate some advice on this secondary prompt: "What has been the one most unique leadership, entrepreneurial or creative activity in which you participated?" I was thinking of writing about how I lead phlebotomy workshops for hospital volunteers every few months. I basically prepare for these workshops on my own and teach students about the venipuncture technique + the history of phlebotomy. Would this be relevant to the prompt? I was thinking of this as a leadership experience, but I was told that teaching isn't considered leadership. Now I'm wondering if I could describe this as a "creative activity". What do you all think? Or should I just pick a completely different activity?

That is one of the prompts for the UCLA secondary. The Charles Drew/ UCLA secondary is different.

With that said, I totally think teaching is both a leadership and a creative activity. And you have a great one with the phlebotomy class as it shows leadership, responsibility, passion for medicine, and a lot of other great qualities!

Oh, ops, I'm sorry about posting my question in the wrong spot! Thanks so much for your reply though. 🙂

Does anyone know where to find the prerequisite for Charles Drew? I know someone asked earlier but I didn't see any response

I emailed the Admissions office about it. They said they follow the same requirements as UCLA Geffen.

Hey guys! I have a quick question. I was verified 8/23 by AMCAS but I just added UCLA/Drew to application a few days ago. Do you think they’ll be sending out more secondaries?

I believe I’m a pretty good fit for the school being that I’m an URM, I’ve done a lot of volunteering for the underserved, and come from an underserved community myself. And my personal statement illustrates all that ...

Absolutely you should apply.

Sent from my SM-G955U using SDN mobile

In terms of secondaries, I am positive that they are going to send out at least one more batch. They have only sent out one wave of secondaries so far earlier in September (?).

Okay, thank you! I hope so 🙂

Submitted secondary last week and mailed the check to them today! I really hope I get an interview here. Worked hard on that long secondary.

Please can someone give me more insight on this school. I understand their mission but what I don't fully understand is their linkage to David Geffen. Is CDU a medical school inside David Geffen? does their diploma say David Geffen? do they have different buildings? or is it a separate school, I'm confused. Yeah I have read the website but still confused.

Drew is a private university located in south LA with its own community clinics and hospitals but does not have a separate medical school. This program is a partnership between UCLA and Drew and we are all UCLA students—just consider this program like a track like MSTP or PRIME, etc. Drew is a separate location from the UCLA campus but we are not required to go there often, at least as far as I know as a first year. All our classes are at geffen/we all live in Westwood. Our formal education is mainly thru UCLA and our research and rotation sites opportunities are a mix of UCLA and Drew.

We get 2 white coat ceremonies, and our diploma will have both schools listed but we receive only one MD. We have additional clinical rotation sites available to us with Drew’s hospitals. In addition to the support at UCLA, we also get administrative support (tutoring support, another dean, etc) from Drew.

We are also obligated to write a research thesis as part of our program.

Hope this clears up some confusion!

Oh, so you received a secondary from Geffin, not DREW?

Do you get a complete email or some type of acknowledgement that they received your payment/app? If so, how long does it take?

yes page 3 of this thread has people’s replies about this. they seemed to send complete email in batch. some got the emails 10 days after and some got the email after a day 🙂

I sent my money order but since I wanted tracking they made me have it so that someone has to sign to receive it. Do you think that is going to delay them getting the check? Because it says attn: and I’m worried they will only allow the person it’s addressed to sign for it. It was supposed to be delivered yesterday but got delayed so they said it would be delivered by 8pm. It’s still not delivered and it’s 640pm and there’s likely no one to sign for it. Thinking I should have just sent it regular, but I wanted to know when they received it.

I sent my money order through fedex with a tracking number because I wanted to do the same thing as you. It was delivered and signed by someone else although I had an “ATTN: XXXX”. I was marked complete during the first wave of complete emails last week. You should be fine!

Thank you! I think the problem is with the post office. I should have sent it through fedex. I mailed it on Saturday from only 30 miles away and its still not there. Last time I use USPS.

congrats! when were you complete? also what were your stats if you dont mind?

Hey congrats! Do you mind me asking when were you complete?

They were offering two dates this weekend in October and nov 17. I believe they only do one interview day a month

You probably got an interview. People from last years thread would receive a missed call from them with no voicemail and then they would call again and it would be an interview!
That makes me feel better! I’ll def keep my phone on me at all times 🙂

I really wish they would leave a voicemail because if someone's phone was off how would you even know you got a call w/o a voicemail

The reason I ask is because I got a missed call from them at 7:45 this morning but no voicemail
I got a call around 4 30pm Pacific. (California time). The phone number should begin with (323)-480---- the extensions varies based on which line was used

Last week Friday, 12th. So basically a three day turn around for me. In my opinion, I do think they do an initial glance at every application and pick the ones who are most committed to their mission for an II.

Just received my secondary... when I submitted my primary in early September. I completely lost hope about this school, but I am thrilled just to have the chance to apply.

Does 800 characters include spaces?!

Anyone have the updated number of applicants/secondaries/interviews/acceptances from last year?

I realized the character count I used was accidentally not including spaces. I hope this doesn’t disqualify my application. It was hard for me to just stay within those guidelines!

Does anybody know how many interview days there are?

Oh wow. I submitted early October. Didn't even get a complete email.

Did you receive a complete email first?
