2019-2020 Jefferson (Kimmel)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Question for the group:
Under the section that says "Do you have a parent who received a M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College or completed residency (postgraduate) or fellowship training at Jefferson?", and then after clicking yes, one of the boxes you have to label just says "Year".

Is this year of birth? class year or residency completion year? What if my parent did both?

So I submitted the secondary but it shows "Letters of references not received" under the application status. My AMCAS application shows that the committee letter was received in late May so I'm confused if the letters have just not been forwarded by AMCAS or is it just a lag in the system?
I was wondering the same thing. Letters were received a while ago. Just assuming there is a lag in the system.

Does anyone else's account say letters not received, even though on AMCAs my letters were sent? Should I call them to check why they are not there?

I want to add my scores, but I took the SAT when it was based off a 2400 scale... Is there an accurate conversion for the new scale or what?

Did you end up figuring out an answer for that? I am in the same situation.

Yes, and as far as I can tell from reading last year’s threads this is 100% normal and you shouldn’t call them. Schools download letters in batches, so they just haven’t downloaded ours yet. If your letters are AMCAS they’ll get there, don’t worry!

This might seem like a silly question but SKMC has a good ole regular MD program right? In the question about ¨Which programs are you applying for¨I dont see that option...

I just left it blank. Was able to submit without a problem.

Wait I didn't even think about this...do they want us to put the converted scores or the scores we actually got?
I didn’t convert. Just ignored the writing section. I don’t think they care, just for data collection purposes.

Last year's thread also said SAT/ACT was for internal research purposes only, so I'm not worrying about it too much. Plus I feel like the majority of applicants took it on the 2400 scale (HS Class of 2015, 2016)...

I just don't know whether to plug in a "diversity" essay or a gap year essay for the optional essay, or if I should leave it blank???

I think majority of people did a why us or a gap year update. Important thing is to not force anything.

Is it bad to keep it simple for the optional essay? Just like what I'm doing with my gap year? Would they take that as not showing interest? If so, what else should I write about?

For the part where you have to select the type of letter that's being sent. I'm having a Committee Letter sent but I'm pretty sure the way they do it is by compiling all of my individual letters into a packet, writing their own Committee Letter, and sending it together. So I'm not sure whether to check off the first box only (Health Professions Committee Letters from College/University) OR first and second box (Recommendation Packet Compiled by (Pre-Med) Advising Office)? I'm thinking that since technically only one specific letter type is being sent I would just do the first? Anyone have any input?

I just selected both, hopefully it doesn't really matter

For the optional essay, I wrote about my diversity as a candidate and a little bit of "why" Jefferson, in terms of a diverse range of research to participate in since I'm coming from being a medical technologist.

I wrote around 3600 characters. I didn't use the full 4000 because I didn't want to add fluff or overload the reader.

I can't imagine that the SAT/ACT scores matter much at all

From what I've read on previous threads, it looks like the ACT/SAT scores are solely for research purposes and have no impact on your application!

If I took the ACT more than once can I use my highest English score and my highest math score even if they are from different tests? My college didn't superscore so do I have to just use the one test I submitted for college?

I did use my highest English and highest math score from different tests but because they are likely only using it for research I don't think it matters!

Does SKMC highly value community work in underserved areas? I remember reading this somewhere and want to write about it in my optional essay, but I can't find anything on their website or mission that points to them emphasizing this more so than any other given school.

I called College Board and there's a $43 fee for me to get my scores mailed to me (no electronic option to receive them) since I took it so long ago. Is there any way around this? Did anyone else run into this pro
When did you take them? I was able to log on with my old account and see them.

Did anyone else know about the letter requirements? MSAR said nothing about it. Is anyone else not gonna submit all the "recommended" LOR? Also, if it's "recommended", why do they want us to write an exemption about it in the secondary?

Its on their website pretty explicitly laid out. It seems like they are pretty lenient with the policy though.

Would it be better to apply regular MD instead of the Physician Shortage Program if you're interested in rural/ PC, from a rural county, but OOS? It says OOS candidates from rural areas would be considered, but with so few spots it seems it may be a lost cause if you're not from Del or Penn?

has anyone else not received a complete email yet? I received the email stating that my secondary has been submitted on 6/30, and the portal shows that my app is under review, but I haven't received an email confirming that my application is complete.
I haven’t received a “complete” email either but if all the items have green check marks on the portal should be okay!

hi guys! i'm new here and trying to pre-write secondaries while my primary is processing. is anyone able to share the secondary prompt? thank you

I dont remember exactly what it said, but there was a 4,000 character box where you could include any optional information. For instance, i included a note about my LORs and wrote a why kimmel essay

"Do you have any additional information that hasn't been covered? " 4000 characters, optional. Only needed to cover something not already in your app, not to rehash stuff you've already mentioned. Also nice avi, looks like Kelly went back to get her degree

Hi everyone! I've seen numerous questions about various topics and I thought I would address them in one post.

1. The SAT score requirement is completely optional and does not impact your application in any way. It is merely for research purposes only.

2. The essay is also optional, but I recommend doing it. It is a space where you can lay out things you like about the school, why you are a good fit, diversity, etc. You can write about anything you want!

3. I do not know much about the LOR requirement. I would put in whatever recommendations you have and if you meet the requirement that is great. But, make sure to follow the directions for if you do not. I believe someone said that you have to write about it in your essay, so make sure you follow those directions.

I wish everyone luck during this cycle! If you have any questions please feel free to reach out!

If you are truly interested in the program and committed to practicing in a rural area, I would still apply. I know they emphasize the PA & DE residence on the website, but I also know they will still seriously consider OOS applicants. The rural health shortage is very real throughout the country, so if you express your interest while being OOS I do not think it hinders your application by any means. Best of luck.

is the 4000 characters including spaces? thank you so much for your help.

Would it be alright to include more than one topic in their "Do you have any additional information that hasn't been covered?" prompt? I've so far used the space for my gap year plans but could potentially use the space to address my lower grades from freshman year. Would that be okay?

Absolutely!
