Me checking my email for any Kaiser message since completing my Secondary in August:

Anyone know ow many Acceptances they plan on giving out for the 46 spots (before going to the WL)?
Any idea how many they’ve offered already?

I don't think anyone is really sure...it does seem like more people have gotten accepted in the past few weeks than earlier in the cycle, but the only thing to really go off of is SDN posts, and who knows how many people have gotten in outside of SDN. I would assume they are going to be pretty conservative with As. I would guess that they'll send out WL/Rs after their last interview day as it appears only As have been given out so far, and that WL movement won't happen until April when AMCAS rules come in to play. Just my thoughts tho, don't take my word for it!

@EmbryonalCarcinoma is the single most supportive person on this site dont @ me
EmbryonalCarcinoma should’ve chosen “Underwire” for a username... so supportive! 😛
@EmbryonalCarcinoma is the only reason I’m on SDN.
I really appreciate the turn this thread has taken. 100% on board the bandwagon. Might even drive it when @ls1422 gets tired.
SECOND THIS
I know we’re not supposed to doxx anyone on here, but I did some snooping and found this real life picture of @EmbryonalCarcinoma. If I get banned for posting it, oh well. We all need to see the person behind the avatar.

I didn't even apply to Kaiser. Just stopping by to confirm what we all already know ^
@EmbryonalCarcinoma :claps:
I just wanted to say thank you for all this unexpected support! It's been a rough few weeks for me (because I'm anxiously awaiting news from schools and for other, more personal reasons), but this cheered me up! I hope the rest of all y'all's cycles go the way you hope, but if not, I'm always here to listen. <3

Does anyone know the time constraints for the MMI? As in how long for the time to read the prompt vs speaking with the interviewer. I know it differs a little from school to school.

Hey ya'll, I'm beginning to make my list for schools to apply to next year. I had a question, I guess the kids who interviewed would be the best to answer this. Aside from tuition(very big reason) and location(a negative for me actually), why else are ya'll excited about the school? I've looked at their website for more information about their curriculum but I can't find much information. How do they prep students for Step? Who writes exams? Is there enough research time for students? Thanks for any info you may provide. You can PM me if you want. No intention in derailing the thread.

sending you a PM shortly!

For those who have interviewed, does the day tend to actually run until 4pm? Trying to see if I can make a 5pm flight (limited options from LAX to my home airport). Thanks!

If you want to fly at 5, you leave for the airport at 3 PM from Pasadena. And that's cutting it close. I grew up in LA, and traffic is always bad.

5 PM might actually be a bit tough — the day ends around 3:30-4:00 PM, if I recall correctly and traffic from Pasadena to LAX is nuts. Maybe check Burbank airport? Or email the admissions staff to ask if you can head out a bit earlier

I drive by it pretty often since I’m from the area and it’s still under construction :/ they installed lights finally though

Don't matter. It's free tuition.

During my interview day, they said they’re interviewing until mid March! I really hope I get in here, definitely one of my top choices.

for those that got in, how did you feel about the interview afterwards?!

I had a breakdown in LAX and cried for like two hours, which was very fun and cool and great

Take my opinion with a grain of salt bc Kaiser has been my top choice literally since they announced they were opening, but

I think things to consider are what you plan to match in to: if you want to do like ophthalmology or interventional cardiology or be a neonatal rocket neurosurgeon, then yeah, it is probably safer to go to UCSF, but I think if you want anything less competitive or middle of the road like IM or peds emergency med, then I wouldn't just point blank turn down Kaiser.

I think that Kaiser is going to do literally everything they possibly can to ensure that their class is stellar--the resources they have are unparalleled and they have a lot riding on their inaugural class. Of course every school wants you to succeed, but I think the stakes are a lot higher for them so they are going to invest an incredible amount of time and resources. Think about the faculty to student ratio--only 48 students for an entire school of full-time professors who are dedicated to teaching us, not spread between clinical and other academic duties.

I also think it's foolish to dismiss 150k of debt as inconsequential. Debt is one of the most commonly cited reasons for physician burnout (To prevent physician burnout and depression, tackle financial stress and Quality of Life, Burnout, Educational Debt, and Medical Knowledge Among Internal Medicine Residents - PubMed) and it doesn't look that is going to be changing any time soon--unless we get solutions like free medical school. I am biased because I grew up in a low-middle income household, but 150k of debt doesn't just wiped out after a few years of work. That is a serious burden that can impact where and what you choose to practice, your ability to get married or start a family, and lifestyle that you can have in your late 20s/early 30s.

Lastly, remember that Kaiser didn't just pop up overnight. It does have a convoluted history (as literally all healthcare systems and hospitals do), but they are an extremely well-established system, and that will hold weight in future careers--I would be a lot more dubious if it was a free-standing med school. The faculty seems to come from well known and top tier institutions around the US--Dr. Schuster (CEO/founding dean) was the Chief of Peds at Boston'Children's, for example. I work in a large academic institution on the east coast and there is a lot of buzz about KP as a system and the med school.

Anyways. I am procrastinating. I totally respect anyone who would choose UCSF or any other school, but just my extensive thoughts!!!!
if you want to stay in the kaiser system, fine pick Kaiser, otherwise no matter how hard they try, it's still a new school so other PD's won't just jump on them from the get go. Name building takes time, it doesn't happen overnight that's why the first 5 classes are free.

What's a PD? Also, by 5 classes you mean the 5 incoming classes starting this year will each have free tuition for 4 years?!

I think Kaiser SOM is aware of potential residency outcome hesitations for incoming students and thus with a class size of 48 students they are going to advocate for them, visit top residency programs and tell them what the school is about, how their doctors are trained etc. but when I was at my interview the CEO/Dean told us that top residency directors were reaching out to them telling Kaiser to keep them on their radar for their students
