I'm guessing everyone signed an NDA for the MMI so you can't answer much. But do we get a notepad to write notes on and bring in the room? And do we get the prompt in the room?

You get a notepad or scratch paper (I don’t remember which) and the prompts are hanging on the door of the room!

Just got an II for next week pretty late in the season. How did people feel about the interview day, did it seem organized and informational? Pretty late in the cycle, wasn't expecting anything at this point. Pleasantly surprised by comping the hotel stay the night before.

One of the most structured and organized MMI I've been too, very informative, and they do a really cool tech demo. Plus breakfast and lunch!

When was your application complete?

Kaiser interview day was great. Interviews were well structured, demos were super cool, hotel was comped, and they provide a legit catered breakfast and lunch. Plus, as a later interviewer the building [might] be more complete, so maybe you'd get to see some of it (it was pretty bare bones during my interview day.)

Just received an interview but only one date is available next week. Would anyone be able to tell me if this is the norm for this school or should I wait to see if more dates become available tomorrow?

Thank you!

I can't say for certain, I would recommend you call admissions tomorrow and see. Seeing as it is the end of the interview season, they probably do not have other dates available. I believe people early in the season were given numerous dates to schedule.

Thank you for your advice!

Anyone still waiting for interviews here? I haven't heard anything back from Kaiser since submitting my secondary. Do they do silent rejections? Thanks!

I'd say most are waiting for interviews here. No one knows if they do 'silent rejections' as this is their first cycle. That being said, things don't look good for us. That being said, some people got II's last week, so there is still some hope.

Good to know. I know the chances are slim, but I still have some hope. Thanks!

I saw they had interview dates available for the 12, 13, and 27th of this month before when I was scheduling mine.

Has anyone been able to get ahold of admissions to RSVP for second look? I had a question so I wanted to speak with someone rather than email. I tried calling today with the updated number they gave in the last email, but still wasn't able to get through....

I called a couple days ago and wasn’t able to get through but someone picked up this morning at 9am pacific time when I called.

I emailed the provided email address to RSVP and ask a list of questions regarding second look. I got a confirmation, as well as all of my questions answered within an hour!

well poo. I’ll try again tomorrow I suppose

I just called a few minutes ago and went through. Not helpful to me since the person wasn’t familiar with MD-PhD second look at Caltech, but you should give it a try now.

Accepted! Got the email in the middle of a meeting at work and had to try to keep my composure.

Living the dream. Any stats or info about your general experience in the app cycle this far?

I have only had one interview but weirdly still feeling hope that I hear back from Kaiser. Probably dumb to hang onto but it feels like the best fit, regardless of cost even!!

For those that have been accepted, how did you find out about your financial aid package? Did they just send you an email?

KPSOM graduates will most likely match into Kaiser, if no where else (which is not bad!). For that reason alone, I expect the graduating class match rates to be 100% in their chosen specialties (unless someone decides not to pursue residency or the whole class applies derm). I wouldn’t worry about finding a job. Matching into Mass Gen surgery though, who knows 😵

So, how y’all feeling about KP with USMLE’s announcement about STEP 1 today? I don’t mean to derail this thread, but everyone on Reddit is stressing how much more important reputation will be for matching now.
Was 100% for it prior to the announcement and it made me second guess the choice but I’m still going to go here in favor of my more “competitive” acceptances. It just means I have to really utilize those caltech connections for some good research and do some away rotations at the big Los Angeles medical centers for hopefully better letters. Superstars will find a way to shine no matter where they go

This was uplifting! and yeah--I'm still 97% sure I'm going to end up here. I also just read the full report (which I recommend anyone else who is interested to do) and found it rather interesting.

This definitely worries me, especially because at the interview they said they specifically designed the curriculum to beat Step 1. I’m going to go to Second Look and ask what the plan is...

Yes, where my doubts are as well. That being said, they also are probably more suited than other schools to revamp other parts of the curriculum--eg protected time for STEP 2, since those scores will also likely matter more. Will be very interested to see how this is addressed at second look

ah reddit... a collection of shadowy internet faces making judgments on things they're not qualified on. take others' opinions (especially those going through similar experiences as you) with a grain of salt.

lets think about this for a second... residency directors have a legal/ethical responsibility to their hospital administration and themselves to recruit individuals that they see worth in. in the past, it was statistically based off on your STEP 1 score, yes, but do you honestly believe they're going to just guess on people based on their school's name because STEP 1 is no longer a means to stratify applicants statistically? no. this means other factors of your application just became much more important. who knows which factors these individuals will put more weight on? but, i can definitively say they're not posting spongebob memes on reddit...

Yeah, of course it won't be based on school name alone, but I do think it's safe to say that it will matter more now than it has in the past. This has already been a concern of students on this thread, and it just got a whole lot more relevant. There are even program directors on r/medicine who are not super happy about this because this change came without any sort of recommendations on how the rest of the residency application process might need to shift in response. I'm not trying to freak anyone out here, was just curious to hear it from others who are in the same position I am (eg leaning heavily towards a school with literally no reputation).

trust me, not trying to be rude, but this is your opinion. unless i see some sources from PDs that directly state this as a criterion of their consideration in accepting applicants, in my opinion, it's safe to say that this is purely conjecture from fellow applicants and colleagues who are not in the authority to be making these decisions in the first place.

though, there are definitely two sides to the token, the prestige of an institution influences its funding/endowment and faculty reach. this is the real world. MD students at higher-tier undoubtedly have better research opportunities/experiences, clinical clerkships (generally), extracurricular involvement, etc. than students at lower-tiered schools. but does this mean that students at these low-tier schools are boned as reddit is making it out be? no. just means they will probably have to find other resources elsewhere to make themselves more competitive. i would argue this is a clear unintended consequence of the USMLE's recent change.... they were trying to reduce stress amongst students only to reintroduce the same gripes MD students had as premeds.

kaiser is a new school with "no name", sure, but could you make an argument that the school offers all the help you could possibly ask for to be a competitive applicant objectively? i say hell yes. and i'd argue the same for many "low-tier" schools. medicine is what you make it out to be. cliche i know.

I think you guys who have been accepted into Kaiser shouldn't really worry about Step 1 changing into P/F cause "worst case," you'll end up doing your residency at Kaiser while being debt free. That's a sweet deal imo.
I’ve been insisting that Kaiser will funnel their first few graduating classes into their own residency slots (of which they have many) for months and this does not change my mind. Saying that Kaiser has “no name” when they’re quite literally a national healthcare giant is absurd. They have more than enough resources to ensure that their first several classes succeed and I can’t come up with a single reason for them to not use them. If you have room to match each and every one of your students into a competitive specialty of their choosing at one of your hospitals, pleasing your students AND making an impressive match list, why would they not do that?

Bigger decisions to come with Kaiser vs X now that Step 1 is moving to pass / fail.
Is a T10 or T20 school worth $300K more in loans?

If you want to stay in California/Kaiser, I would definitely save the money. I'm pretty confident they will take care of their students using their residencies if need be.
