2019-2020 NYU, Long Island

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As I mentioned in the last sentence recognizing that there is only an M1 class.
sorry for bothering you so much, but could you tell me what stood out to you about the school. Couldn't find much info on the website

For those of you who interviewed already? I have some questions about the logistics of the MMI. How many stations were there? How long was each station? How long do you have to prep for each station?

I figured, but also thought that something as insignificant like timing would be okay since it doesn't reveal anything about the content of the interviews itself. Either way, I respect people's decision if they don't want to speak on it

Are you interviewing this week? Just out of curiosity.

So I just looked at some notes I had and I think they're from the interview tab, but it states that there are 9 successive interviews and the entire process takes about an hour so i'm guessing 6-7 minutes each including prep and transition time

Admissions office is very helpful if you email with specific qs!

Does anyone know when acceptances will be released?

At my interview they said that a handful of acceptances would go out in Fall but that the vast majority would be extended February-March timeframe. Mainly seemed that way since the class is so small, so they want to interview majority of people before decisions are made.

I was told the same thing as well. Also, the dean said they will call if you’re accepted, but if you’re deferred for a spring decision you won’t hear anything.

Anyone have any feedback about interview day? How did you like the school?
I interviewed like 2 weeks ago. I was impressed by some things and let down by others. The area of the school is really nice. It is suburban and close to Manhattan if needed to go into the city take two trains total of an hour ish.

The school is new, so there are still some kinks to work out. The cadavers are plastinated so that is a minus in my book. The building is brand new only 4 years old with plenty of nice rooms and such. The school is tiny as it only houses a max of 40 students per class year. The dorms are amazing, heavily subsidized and spacious for what you pay. The school seems mid teirish, the faculty was insecure almost, like they had to convince us they were a good school. Curriculum seems OK. Hospital is decent, gaurentteed residency is a plus. Overall, it's a okay school with insane benefits: free tuition, 3 year program, amazing location. Also, it's weird only having 24 classmates with only 1 class above you. Might shoot myself in foot with 3 year instead of 4 for residency outside.

Do I hope I get in? Absolutely. The schools mission fits my goals really well and I would be honored to have an opportunity to attend.

Was this a hardier/ easier or relaxed/less relaxed experience interview day? Thank you for that helpful message.

it was relaxed compared to my other MMIs and actually quite fun! really commend the admissions staff for making the day feel less stressful than I expected, given the insanely amazing benefits of the program

Any theories on when they’ll start sending out offers?

Early Sept II but they didn’t specify. Sucks we don’t have last year to go by since they had a different timeline

Anyone brave enough to call and ask? I'm wary of annoying their admissions office haha

Looking for some advice : I submitted an IM-secondary back in early July (haven’t heard anything back yet) and started an ED scribe rotation shortly after (previously coming from an urgent care & outpatient IM). Over the past 4 months I’ve been feeling really drawn to the womens health/ob/gyn cases and have even been looking into the state of domestic/international womens health issues outside of work. Does anyone know the protocol for attempting to switch secondary specialties? Or is it not possible?

Advice appreciated! Thank you

Anyone who has interviewed already wiling to break down the schedule for the day? Specific timeline would be really helpful

Also, it is all closed file MMIs? (Are there any traditional stations?)

Thanks

Presentation, tour, MMI, Debreif w/ QA in that order. Start at 9:30 finish at 4:00.

Breaks in between? (Breakfast or lunch provided?)

Sorry to be so specific. I have some medical stuff going on right now so timing of breaks and food are important for my planning right now
There is a one hour lunch break / meet and greet with current medical students

"Offers of admission will be held until all interviewed applicants have been reviewed by the executive committee and will then be extended to the most qualified applicants. If an offer of admission is declined by an applicant, subsequent offers of admission will be extended to applicants in decreasing order of qualification until a stable class is identified for enrollment." (Source: https://medli.nyu.edu/sites/default/files/policy-on-student-selection.pdf)

Their admission timeline shows that interviews run through February so I'm guessing that we won't be hearing back until then.

The dean said that have released a couple of acceptances “at a trickle” but that the majority of us won’t hear back until february. He also mentioned that they may not even fill all the potential interview dates if they are happy with the people they have already interviewed and said they’ve had 2-3 interview dates per month so far. Just so everyone is in the loop! I was more impressed with the school than I expected to be, but I’m not expecting much considering that their class will only have 24 students for next year.

Oh only 2-3 dates per month?

Still a low post II acceptance rate but a lot better compared to last year. Also they are adding more seats this year so it should be 30 seats. Not much of a difference but hoping those extra 6 will help one of us out!

the dean said they will be leaving things at 24 seats this year. The number of interviews this year is not drastically lower than the number last year 🙁

That's strange considering the dean said they were adding at least 6 more seats my interview day.

" NYU LISOM received over 2,400 applications for the 24 available slots this year. It has already begun recruiting for next year’s class, which will include 32 students " - https://www.nyu.edu/about/news-publ...lcomes-first-class-at-nyu-long-island-sc.html

Check this article out?

Hopefully he got it mixed up we need more seats :cyclops:

During my interview day the dean said that they are considering keeping the class size at 24 this year

Someone wanna call tomorrow and verify which one it is 😀

I'll call tomorrow to clarify since I also had an early September interview and he explicitly said it would be at least 30 seats along with the NYULI article confirming my statement.

I'll post back during lunch break what they say.

Based on what he said my interview day, they’re still in the process of raising funds for next year’s class, so I think the number of seats is highly dependent on that. I think NYULI’s website now says 24 seats, which is what he said on my day as well!
