2019-2020 UCLA (Geffen)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
random question here. Who was the faculty person that gave us an inspiring speech in the morning of the interview?

More competitive?

More competitive, less things to do, not enough sites, we’re already being sent to sites in Fresno, thousand oaks (they’re so far that the school houses you there). I just can’t possibly imagine nearly 400 students at the sites... So it’s gonna be bad for a while. Until things settle down or the school finds more sites/convinces people to accept more students.

Idk, but just remember that the school you choose shouldn’t be based off it’s US news rankings... I hope people don’t choose our school just for it’s name, you may be left disappointed.

Are you aware if the school is actively trying to incorporate more sites? Or is the attitude currently 'we'll just make do with what we have'?

Wow Fresno? Like they share a site with UCSF?

Honestly the site may be Bakersfield, both very far nonetheless.
I know they have reached out to current sites to expand how many med students they can handle. I don’t know about increasing sites because there are now 3 medical schools (don’t forget Kaiser is also starting their first class) in LA. 4 if you count Western since they do rotations at county sites.

So uncharted territory is the best description I think.

no but ive heard lots of stuff from my friend from ucberkeley. She has lots to say and said this exact thing to me 😵

nonetheless, i plan to grill them about this at second look.
As you should it’s your careers...

also please let me know what they say, very curious what their public facing plan in lol.

Drew is pretty shielded from this right with its own rotations secured for their students only?

I believe you will be because you have 1 or 2 extra sites, MLK and St Mary’s but I believe you still share surgical sites with everyone else.

I asked about it semi-recently. Got told that they took this into account and have it set up so we wont be doubled up. Or at least that was the message I think they wanted to convey. The specific wording reminded me of the way my lawyer friend speaks when he doesnt want to be blamed for something later on. I'm on the fence about how I feel about those years, especially with how little prestige is going to matter to me.

In remembrance of MLK today, I present to you a famous quote from his letter from Birmingham Jail: "justice too long delayed is justice denied".

Maybe there is a lesson in this quote for UCLA adcoms!! :meh:

I called twice today but it went to voicemail both times. Looking at last year's thread, there weren't any acceptances given out in January, so I wonder if we'll have to wait till Feb?

honestly, I feel bad for admission faculties. Prob equivalent if not worse than some customer service lines.

"hi I was wondering if I can get any updates on my application"
"hi was there a wave of acceptances released?"
"hi am I waitlisted?"
"hi I haven't heard anything for three months now"
"hi I was wondering if I should send a thank you letter"
"hi will you release any acceptances this week or this month?"
"hi i heard the admission committee has met. Oh, do you know when the next meeting is"
"hi do you know when will we hear back"
"hi do you have any news on my application"
"hi I didn't receive an email that my friends received"
"hi I interviewed here a couple of months ago"
"hi do you still extending interviews? oh, you are done, thank you!"
"hi blah blah blah.... meh meh meh..."

if it doesn't go to the voice mail, expect to hear:
"We don't have any information on that yet. We are sorry for the wait. Please be patient and we will update you as soon as we have the information. Thank you and have a good day."

if you are mad that you didn't hear this line and want to hear it so bad, try calling the amazon customer service and complain about your most recent purchase that hasn't been delivered yet.

Not sure if comparing a medical school admissions committee to the biggest retailer in the world is a sound analogy, but what I am pretty sure of is that if Amazon said they'd deliver a package to you in 4-6 weeks, and you're going on 24+ weeks with nothing-- as many people in this feed are-- the response to Amazon would be a lot harsher.

I'm sure you didn't mean for this comment to come off as rude or self-righteous (or maybe you did; idk you), but it definitely does. Everyone still waiting to hear back knows they're neurotic because they feel it all the time. Not sure if this is how you plan on interacting with patients who are frustrated and going through a hard time, but I would imagine DGSOM is trying to cultivate kinder, more compassionate physicians with a greater sense of humility.

Yeah 99% of those issues can be solved with communication. If you want to compare it to Amazon, I got a notification this morning that my package is delayed by 4 hours.

I get that some people could use a bit of tough love with regards to how neurotic they allow themselves to be, but much of this is avoidable.

im concerned for the next class

i hope people resolve their neurotic neediness before med school.

yes i meant to be the way you felt because no one here speaks for how the admission peeps feel yall

Ya c/o 2024 is gonna be turrrrible

do you have any information about how they plan to handle the double up of medical students on clerkships? Thanks!!

I think the school is still working on it.
been hearing rumors and info flying around.
doubt people will have to go that far for clerkships but it's likely :/
i think the main problem is with the surgery clerkship... idk how many more OR they are pull up for students to go around
hey you might be paired with a c/o 2025 person with you in the OR 🙂 more standing out moment for you? (maybe?)

prob gonna suck regardless though, just a matter of how much it will suck

Any idea when there will be an accepted students page? Also if we havent heard about any scholarships are we still in the running or is it basically a tiny chance of merit aid?
It’s need based aid at the school, merit “aid” is scholarships. I believe you all are evaluated by the scholarship committee before being offered an acceptance. So if you haven’t received anything I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Frankly, on the bright side, after this week, everyone who has been given the silent treatment can finally move on from this place and look forward to other things! 🙂

going thru the turmoil with UCLA has also made me all the more appreciative of schools that are straightforward, and transparent regarding communication during what is already a stressful process for everyone

What do you mean by "after this week?"
