2019-2020 UCLA (Geffen)

How did you all address the problem prompt? It seems like they are looking for a single personal event.
I talked about this time i travelled alone to a foreign country when I was still pretty young and how I adapted. Talked about connecting across cultures and how that relates to medicine.

For the research experience section how in depth do you think we need to go? I feel like this was all covered in the MD/PhD significant research experience essay

Hey guys, I'm a high-stat applicant and I still have not received a secondary...my application was verified on the first day that submissions opened, so I feel like I should be worried by this point :/
Should I contact them?
Also: I do have an IA on record, which could delay it? I just feel like submitting a secondary, even if I got one in the next week, would be breaching too late.
Just wanted to follow up with you: Are you still waiting? I too marked IA (it is completely inconsequential...) I still anticipate receiving the secondary at some point. Not going to reach out to them until august if still no receipt. Just wanted to check in with you to see if the same-boat thing was holding us up.

4000 characters is not enough, in my opinion, to go in-depth about your research (theory/literature review, hypothesis, methods, etc). I also agree it is repetitive. So, I just started with the goal of the project then discussed key results, while emphasizing my role in the lab. Mentioned any papers/posters as well. Wrote less than 1500 characters for each project.

Yep, I'm still waiting. I wouldn't say that my IA is super inconsequential, but it looks like just having it marked flags the application. Lucky us!!! 🙂

Lol mine was def inconsequential....but yah, just flagged it. Yay. Hopefully they do manually review. Although, they get enough applications that they could theoretically just leave us to die.

The email said they needed at least 3 letters of rec, but my school sends out committee packets including a committee letter and all my original letter of recs. Is this alright? Thanks in advance.

Usually committee letter packets fulfill any/all requirements for most schools

Is anyone else's letters not showing up under document status, but is marked as complete with the green checkmark?

I received my secondary today (7-20-19)! Verified 7-19-19. Instate. sGPA: 3.94. GPA: 3.94. MCAT: 511. I am glad they seem to be more flexible with the cutoff than what was stated.
Oof, got verified 7/15/19. Lemme start mentally preparing just in case...

How far do you guys think stretching the definition of honor is appropriate? Being accepted to my father's alma mater was one of my proudest moments. He moved here as an immigrant with no English and was able to manage earning a degree from UCLA itself with while financially supporting himself, his brother living with him and his poor family in Iran. I have an entire response prepared about the honor of continuing his legacy and repaying my debts to him, but I have no clue if it's an appropriate definition of honor for the prompt. I don't want to be viewed as just trying to not leave the space blank, especially with a topic so near and dear to my heart.

The definition of honor in this question is loose. I take it to mean something/anything you have accomplished that makes you most proud. But dont overthink it, you only have 300 characters. Granted the small space to write, this Honor might not be the best to use. But if it works than go for it.

Thought it was 800 characters for some reason. Yeah, 300 is definitely not enough to get across the emotional significance. I came up with another experience, thank you!

I submitted my secondary and sent my LORs 6 days ago, but I have a red exclamation point and "Not received" for my LORs under the application status. Is anyone else in the same situation? Should I reach out to AAMC or possibly the admissions committee about this?

How is your status as of today? I feel like they review randomly in batches now. Maybe you are in a later batch by chance?
Hey. So no correspondance from them so far. Hell, even UCLA/Drew hit me up at least. But you're right. With the mess they had going on last cycle in particular and the massive influx of apps, it's possible. Not losing hope but a bit anxious. Thanks for asking...

Hey we are all in this together :cat: I hope it will be going well with you!

For the question "Explain the gap between achieving your last degree (baccalaureate or other degrees post baccalaureate) and the expected time of medical school matriculation," should I interpret this as talking about WHY i'm taking a gap year, or just talking about what i'm are doing during my gap year?

My stats are below their supposed cutoffs as well. My application was verified on July 18. No Secondary for me atm. I didn't get one last year either but I applied quite late last year. Oh well.

So for the Scholarly Project Prompt. I have absolutely nothing to put haha. I did zero research during my undergraduate years. Think I should still submit the secondary? Haha.

Hi All! I have two questions about Geffen:
• Is the 512 cutoff in effect?
• Does Geffen pre-screen on who to receive secondaries?

1. It doesnt look like it's being implemented this year. You can see from others who received their secondary that some were below the cutoff
2. Yes they do a holistic screen

If you apply to UCLA-Geffen PRIME and was not considered, does this automatically put you into regular MD consideration?

I'm in the same exact boat. I'm really not very interested in research so I chose to spend my time in undergrad doing other things rather than do research to just check off a box.

Yeah, I just honestly did not have time between full-time student, work, and volunteer. I guess I can just put N/A and then the committee will take one look and delete my file haha

I wouldn't put N/A! Dig deeper, write about a big class/lab project. Good luck!

Don’t you need research to be competitive? I think like 97% of matriculants to all of these top schools did research.

For top schools, yes. Research is absolutely not needed to get in to A medical school, butt it is bar-none a REQUIREMENT for T10 and I might even say T25 schools.

@ those who have submitted already for a while... when I go back to portal to check on my transcripts, my school name is there but there's no date for "received"... anyone else have this issue?

edit: my app has a green check mark next to complete fwiw.

Does anyone know what the hard deadline is for submitting the secondary? In the email they said 30 days, but on their website it says 15..

That is a good point, I definitely did some pretty long lab reports in the higher biology lab classes I took. The problem is I deleted all that stuff off my computer. Plus I wouldn't know how to get in to touch with the TA haha. Oh well, that's alright.

Slight tangent but for the statement of purpose, are we supposed to come up with something different from our AMCAS Why MD/PhD essay? I feel like I already addressed everything in there.
My rule is to never copy/paste directly. At the same time, it would look suspicious if the AAMC why MD/PhD essay doesn't overlap with this statement of purpose. So, what I did was to briefly write it without looking at my AAMC stuff, then went back to check that I included all of the key points. Don't stress it; it won't make or break. Good Luck!

For the prompt: "Where do you see yourself post-graduate education? What experiences have led you to this goal?" — Are they talking about after graduating medical school OR after completing residency?

Yep, in medicine, medical school is undergraduate, and residency/fellowship is graduate, so post-graduate means your career after that.

Are you sure? I always heard that your PGY-1 year is your first year of residency. PGY-1 stands for post-graduate year 1. I could 1000% be wrong though!

Hmm, I think we are both right, because Graduate Medical Education is residency...so post-graduate would be after that lol. Regardless, I think the question is getting at what do you see doing in your career. (For reference, it changed from last year, which was "where do you see yourself in 10 years").
