2019-2020 UNC - Chapel Hill

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone know how UNC is taking into account CASPER for admissions purposes?

They are not. A friend is in the UNC admissions committee and he says they're using it to collect data for future admissions policies. They'll compare the CA$per scores to STEP1, STEP2, and clinical rotation grades. If there's some sort of positive correlation in the CA$per scores and medical school success, then they will implement CA$per as an additional admissions requirement. If there's no correlation, they'll discard it.

Anyone else have issues logging into the status page? I've been able to login and access my status multiple times, but for some reason this morning its now saying "there is no account associated with this email".

This happened to me a couple of times. Somehow they switched my login email to a different email address. If you have multiple email addresses, try each one.

That's really good to know! I applied here early in the cycle with strong stats (also IS) but have yet to hear back, so I've been worried CASPER may have had something to do with it. But now I'm not sure what it could be, since many people who submitted in August (also IS) have already gotten IIs.

So... I am broke as dirt and the FAP is the only reason I am able to apply. I just got an email saying,

"At this time, we are unable to grant you a fee waiver for the supplemental application. We receive and consider many requests for a supplemental fee waiver, and we are not able to grant fee waivers to all. We will usually grant fee waivers to those with the greatest need. If you are still interested in being considered for an interview, please log back into the application and pay the $68 fee."

I am willing to put that 68 on a credit card, but I am wondering if it is worth it. I have a cGPA of 3.86 and a sGPA of 3.74, 512 MCAT (126, 126, 130, 130). ECs are probably average
- About 200 hours volunteer (Adolescent Grief Support Facilitator, ER, Tutor for Autistic Youth, etc.)
- Patient exposure is 100 hours ER, but if my job taking care of adults with disabilities counts then like 7000
- 4 psych research, some poster some oral
- About 40-50 hours shadowing
- Undergraduate instructor of psychology for about a year

It is getting pretty late to be complete, and I wonder if them denying me the aid just means they aren't really interested. What are y'alls thoughts? Again, if I actually have a decent shot then I am willing to pay. I may just being a neurotic pre-med, whatever.

Also, I am OOS. It looks like they consider 514 a competitive MCAT score and I got a 512.

I always interpreted this as, "We are not going to review your application if you scored below a 514." I am pretty sure that is the correct interpretation as well. I probably wouldn't apply if I were you. You're still in better shoes than the OOS applicant with a 511 that applied EDP to UNC. That was a real headscratcher.

Hey everyone,
so I applied to UNC, IS, sGPA 3.2, cGPA 3.4, MCAT 503 (MPH, >2000 pt contact hrs, nontrad, disadvantaged)
I am hoping to get an II based on their IS criteria, and also because it is my top choice and I do not really want to leave NC.
Anyone think I have a shot?

n=1 but I know a current OOS MS2 whose MCAT is <514 (510 I think?). UNC loves a compelling background/story and really does seem to conduct a holistic review, so if you can give them that and all other aspects of your app are strong, you probably have a shot!

Very excited to interview here next week! Do any locals/former interviewees have dinner recommendations for after the day?

Silence since being complete on 7/24. Anyone else who was complete around this time, hear back yet?

How is interview day here for anyone that has already interviewed?
I found it really enjoyable! Everyone is very friendly and the vibe is very laid back. I can't say too many specifics because we did sign something, but I thought the interviews weren't that bad and many current students came to answer any questions we had during the break and lunch hour. You can tell they love their school!

Any OOS IIs recently?
(I have LM 72 and was complete mid-August upon submission of my committee letter).

Does anyone know how to access their application with all the questions, etc? I can log in and but only view my CA$per update and the option to withdraw my app from the program (LOL). I want to print my app and review it before my interview 🙁

Did you save a copy in a word document?

For those who have already interviewed, were you able to carry a pen and paper into the MMI stations? Thanks!

Does anyone have an idea as to how many acceptances are offered vs matriculants? I figure it's not much higher than the seat number given the high status of the program, but I am still curious.

Most programs offer 1.5-3x as many offers of admission as there are matriculants. Post-II acceptance rate is around 40%.

Thank you for the response. I went ahead and applied. I really like the school and the area. Worst case scenario, I get rejected. Not the end of the world.

Nice! Any ties to the state/school/area and/or a compelling answer to why UNC?
Thanks! No real ties to the school or state, but I did do my research on the school when writing the Why UNC essay and gave a lot of specific examples of why I thought it would be a good fit.

Yooo for those of you who interviewed at Chapel Hill, any tips on the MMI stations / interview day in general? I interpreted their website's interview day description as the stations being groupwork, not sure if I misunderstood. Thanks y'all!

(First post on SDN.. it's lit)

Some are in groups, some are individual

Do they send everyone post-interview emails from a current student? I love this school and the access to resources they provide!

haha they sent me one so I’m assuming yes

For the people who already interviewed: how did you feel about the group exercise?

for people who have interviewed, how would you describe your overall experience? was it laid back or did you find yourself extremely stressed for most of it?

apologies - not an "A" post just a vanilla neurotic premed question - I just checked my portal and there is now a profile picture upload tab "if requested." - did I miss something? I don't remember hearing about it on interview day.

I do not think we need to do anything here as of yet.

Yeah I’ve been trying to tell myself since yesterday that it’s always been there just so I don’t get my hopes up.

What do you all think are the chances some decisions go out today?

Last year they handed out the first wave of acceptances right before the holidays in December right?
