2019-2020 Utah

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
have a question for any current medical students on the thread. I heard from a current M1 student that other medical students moved pins in anatomy/sent out study guides with incorrect answers on them. What are your experiences with this? if true, what do you feel like the overall atmosphere among students is (bc doesn’t seem collaborative)?

Hey. I guess I came across as rude. My apologies. I was legitimately concerned that someone was trying to make things up on the forum to stress out other students, which would be horrible. We can't always trust anonymous strangers. I guess the misunderstanding was mine. So... Congratulations! That is the kind of news that everyone wants to hear. I'm happy for you. Hopefully, you can forgive my assertive denial.
No worries at all, I completely understand why it sounds so random and it would suck if someone was lying and stirring up stress in a school thread for fun. Thank you for the congrats, and ofc totally forgiven not an issue at all 🙂

I just read about this scholarship...and wow you are lucky. What I would give to PAY THEM a zillion dollars to become a doctor is crazy. I can’t imagine being accepted with this cherry on top. Congratulations!!!

I don't know how I feel about calling them lucky. I'm sure they have worked incredibly hard to be in the position they are in and have undoubtedly earned it with blood, sweat, and tears. Not trying to call you out but I imagine they don't feel "lucky" per se.

I have not seen or experienced anything like this. There are a few students that I know that were very worried about “gunners” coming into med school but I feel that it is INCREDIBLY collaborative and those students have found it very open and collaborative as well. Even the more competitive students are welcoming and share their tactics and insights openly. The culture is great and if there were moved pins and study guides with wrong answers it may have been a goof/joke or a mistake. I could be wrong but I would be very surprised if that were true.

These are good points, and it is certainly true that one of UW's main goals is to produce primary care physicians for the region. This is a mission they are very up front with, and are ranked number 2 in primary care training nationally.

However, I think it is important to emphasize that UW also ranks number 12 in research, receiving the most research dollars from the federal government of any public institution, and has an impressive match list for student's across the WWAMI region to back it up. The reason that there are a higher percentage of student's matched into primary care for UW has nothing to do with a lack of opportunity to match into your desired specialty.
To add to this UW and UofU debate. I'm an idaho applicant whose been accepted to both. I spoke with a current M2 at Idaho WWAMI and he told me he feels confident having the prestigious oversight of UW as he is going into a competitive specialty (dermatology). However, he also told me that he had a sort of uphill battle securing research opportunities as the majority of them are at the seattle campus. Given the disconnect, geographically, he did say that he was able to secure research and actually made a publication during his 18 month preclinical phase. But, he indicated that he was the only one out of his cohort that did have a publication in the preclinical phase.

I'm also having trouble deciding between UW (WWAMI) and UofU. Any more discourse would be appreciated.

Tough decision to make. It does seem that if one of your primary goals is to pursue research and obtain several publications by the time you need to apply for residency (which I have heard from several current students is a necessity to match in competitive specialties like derm), Utah is the clear choice. If research is not your primary goal, or maybe you want to obtain only 1-2 publications, UW might be a better option for you. Just depends on your goals and how much you care about location, class size, etc.

Edit: Notably, this is worth giving even more consideration now that step I will not be a determining factor in the matching process.

What is the social scene like at the U? Do students hang out all 4 years? How much of the class is composed of commuters? Is the class culture diverse or homogenous (nothing against Mormons but wondering the ratio of Mormon to non Mormon as groups tend to be cliquey) I think this information is what would tip me towards the U over UW as my biggest fear of UW is not having friends in one spot for 4 years

It seems like its 1/3 mormon, 1/3 non-mormon, and 1/3 used to be mormon. Within 100+ people, you should be able to find your own clique. I have heard from my friends there about nights out drinking with students after tests and things. Salt Lake has some surprisingly fun things to do, but is different than East Coast. You can go snowboarding with your classmates (some students go each sunday). I do not know how many are commuters. I know some people try it and give up after a year to move closer to campus.

Do you follow this? Lots of profiles of current students. Yes, there are LDS students with families in the program. And there are an equal or great er number of more traditional mid-20 somethings up for anything.

I’m confident that you will find your niche of people no matter where you end up. At the end of the day we’ll just be a bunch of M1’s who can’t believe we finally made it. We’ll all be beginning a new incredible journey together and that will bind us and unite us. I think you would be hard pressed to find a cohort where you didn’t mesh quite well with most people.

Just got the call from Dr. Chan, I've been accepted!! interviewed 1/24, in-state. Actually, I missed the call yesterday, and even though Dr. Chan left a message, it was so short that I assumed it was a telemarketing thing and didn't even bother listening to it until this morning. I'm an idiot lol.

Congrats friend! You earned it! My neurosis is wondering how many people are in the Facebook group?

Have those March rejections started rolling in yet? I interviewed 1/6 and radio silence since

Not yet. We are anticipating the Rs will hit starting next Tuesday 3/10 at the earliest, since last year they said "by the 15th" but actually started sending them out on the Tuesday of that week (since that's when admissions meets to do decisions every week). But who knows, this week could also be our week 😢

This year has just been a huge psychic blow. I am crushed that I did not get in to any of the schools I applied to. I know that I was a competitive applicant, but its hard not to self-deprecate, y'know. I was anticipating that it would be a let down if I didnt make the cut, but I am taken aback by just how demoralizing it is. Well, it is what it is. Back to the drawing board. I will get in next time!

At this point, is there any chance that I could still get an acceptance? Interviewed 1/6

Of course! Why on earth wouldn’t there be?

Because people from my interview day already got their responses. I figure that they already have their class and are just going to send a mass rejection email.

From what I understand, they accept about 15% of the class before March and the last 85% get accepted between now and the 15th.
Source: My vague recollection from back when I interviewed in like September for the EDP. I haven't heard anything from these guys since they moved me to the regular applicant pool at the end of September. I wouldn't bank on that number, that's just what I remember understanding and I couldn't tell you where I got that from.

I’ve heard (again, what a great source 😆 ) that 85% of people HEAR BACK in March, not 85% get accepted. I’ve also heard that you only get an early call if your final score (GPA/MCAT, ECs, interview) is above a certain threshold that results in an automatic acceptance. The rest of us are ranked and will get accepted until they fill the class. I think your odds are obviously worse as time goes on and the class starts to fill, but there are still spots in the class. Coldwater_Adler keep your head up! There’s no reason not to, the wait is almost over and this thing will bust open anyway this week or next. My MCAT sucked but I want this more than I can express and can tell we’re similar that way. I’m rooting for ya!

You definitely have a chance! It's not anywhere close to 85% though, at this point we know (see earlier posts) that there are 75 people in the accepted FB group so maybe closer to 85 counting people not on FB. With chances of getting accepted or getting WLed and accepted off there we all have maybe a %15 chance. I am crossing my fingers for you! We will see come next week!

It sucks. I was in the exact same place as you a year ago. Do your best to get real, honest, feedback about your application. Be honest with yourself about what you/your application are capable of and if you are applying to the right schools for you. You might even consider taking a year off to improve your app if that's what you need. You CAN get in and will if it's what you truly want and you're willing to work for it. Hang in there for Utah even though the chances are low, but start preparing NOW if you want to apply again this next cycle.

Unfortunately, this is simply not the case. Many of us have been told similar statistics in the past but they clearly demonstrate the contrary come March. It's exceptionally clear this year with 76* in the FB group already.

Friendly reminder that just because people have joined the Facebook group does NOT mean that they are committed to matriculating!

Of course! I can only go off of evidence from years past that this number in the FB group is indicative of a nearly full class.

Ya. I was kind of thinking of this too. Not very many people actually comment on anything that comes up which leads me to believe that there may be some that are flirting with options

I think this is significant. At the other school I've been accepted to, and am personally flirting with, there are already more than double the number of people in the group than the actual class size. There are also about 30 people who are current MS1 and MS2s that are there to answer questions etc. I think that dr_of_rock is probably right that the 15 85 figure represents the timeline for hearing back at all as opposed to acceptances. In any case, I do not think it is unreasonable at all to continue to hope for an acceptance at this point. This whole discussion becomes essentially irrelevant in like 10 days in any case.

I joined the facebook group, but currently Utah is like my 3rd or 4th choice in my list of acceptances so I expect my spot will open up for someone else. I am just waiting on financial aid information before I make final decisions.

I talked to the financial aid office about scholarships. I guess there are a couple big scholarship floating around but the over whelming majority are for about $2500 but they don’t add to your amount borrowed. In other words let’s say your allowable loan amount is $60k. If you got a $5k scholarship, you still only get $60k but you only have to pay back $55k. For most of you, that won’t matter. For me with several kids and a mortgage, I need all the money I can get to keep the lights on. I would prefer to get $65k and pay back $60k but oh well.

I can attest to this. There was 5-10 people that I remember seeing drop out of the FB group before school started to be replaced with some others.

Best avatar and username to date. Also, what does technically in state mean? Are you OOS with ties or like in state in state? You might make my day.
I grew up in Utah and went to 1 year of grad school there, but otherwise have not been in the state for 7 years. So I ended up having to use a few loopholes to be considered in state when I was applying.

Same- grew up in Utah, grad school in Utah, but I’ve been gone for 2-3 years so I’m sure we are in the same category. Thanks for the little burst of hope! You rock.

Good points from everybody. The bottom line seems to be consistent though; at this point we are likely looking at waitlist or rejection, but of course it is best to remain hopeful.
