2020-2021 Jefferson (Kimmel)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They accept updates; email the dean of admissions (email on school website).

I think Jefferson is considered one of the “needy” med schools that like updates to see that applicants are still interested. Not 100% sure about that though
Thank you so much!! Is it the admissions email or literally the Dean's personal email?

Can someone confirm that Jefferson is needy? I want to send an update but I'm afraid of being/doing too much lol.

Is it too needy to send an update or LOI before an II or is Jeff receptive to that? Complete 9/2 (canceled MCAT). This is my top choice and I'm going stir crazy.

I've heard that its a slow year, and don't forget the majority of invites for interviews are sent between October and January in a normal cycle. Don't worry, though it's hard not to I know.
Have you attended an open house for the school yet? That is a good way to get face time with students and the deans.

How to find dates for the open house

Gives me hope as someone else complete around mid July

Best of luck, friend!

I messed up my secondary -- forgot to include a whole section of my essay that I copied and pasted from my word doc. So, if it's possible for me to get an interview, it's definitely possible for you!!

Sending good vibes 👍

Just venting a little: I have an interview with them next Tuesday and Wednesday (MSTP). They emailed me on Sept 24 asking for a list of faculty I'd like to meet. I saw the email then blanked. On Oct 1, they sent me a follow-up, but I had an extenuating circumstance I needed to deal with, but I wrote out the email and saved it to proofread later. I forgot AGAIN. I finally sent it on Oct 5 when I remembered I didn't the first time. I'm so embarrassed now, and I really hope it's not a mark against me. I'm so frustrated with myself. I'd never "ignored" an email in my entire life before that, and I'd never taken more than two days to reply to one.

Do you think this will negatively impact me? I haven't received any more info about my interview since, even though it's early next week.

Is it a good idea to send an update email or something before getting an II?

Sending pre-II updates varies by school. For example, Baylor only accepts pre-II updates, while Keck does not accept any.

I sent an update to SKMC because a few posts above said that they like hearing updates from its applicants to gauge sustained interest. I'd only send if the updates are meaningful though (i.e. new publications, awards, accomplishments, grades, etc.).

hi! congrats on your interview invite and good luck!! what do you mean by them asking for a list of faculty that [you]'d like to meet. did they basically ask who do you want as your interviewers?
regarding your situation, im not too sure and experienced to tell you what they might think of you, but i think at this point, there is nothing that you can do to change what happened. i think you should focus on doing really well on the upcoming interview and dont let this bothers and stresses you out because it might negatively affect your performance!

You probably hadn't heard back on Friday because they were still scheduling things, I hope you've heard back now? You admittedly didn't give them a lot of time to pull things together, which makes it their lives a little harder, but it may not be a huge ding when it comes to reviewing your app later. Like magicgirl said, what's done is done; I hope you ace your interviews tomorrow!

For MD/PhD interviews, there is usually an opportunity to meet with faculty members you'd like to do research with or are doing work that you're interested in! It's partly to assess how well you can talk about research as well as a chance for the school to sell you on the research they're doing. This is in addition to your regular standard interviews.

Thanks! MD/PhD applicants choose their PhD interviewers, but not MD.

It's much easier said than done 🙁 I'm scared I'm going in already set up for failure (or already with a massive strike against me). I know it'll just be a self-fulfilling prophecy this way, but I'm just so pissed off at myself for letting this happen.

Forgive yourself. You said yourself there were extenuating circumstances, and I’m sure the elusive almighty adcom knows enough about applicants to recognize that it was not indifference on your part. I know it’s easier said than done, but let yourself off the hook

are they sending rejections?

From what I’ve seen in this thread, a few people have gotten rejections (they update the portal but don’t email).

Doesn’t seem to be common though; I submitted mid-July but heard nothing since.

For post-II, it sounded like they like everyone and don't wanna reject so I'm expecting to be rejected at the very end of the cycle

If I interviewed in late September and haven't received a call today about any decision (A/R/WL), does this just mean they haven't got to me yet, they are taking longer to deliberate my application, etc. or what?

They said it depends on when your interviewers can make it to the deliberation meetings. I think other schools, reviewers write notes and then they deliberate, but Jeff likes seeing the interviewers themselves. Also last year, it looks like Jeff was pretty quick to put people on the waitlist (like on Oct 15/16), so no news is good news (?) this is what I'm telling myself haha

Anybody else put on the “special High Priority category” of the waitlist? Wondering if that’s just what they say to everyone placed on the waitlist.

Also, how have people been sending updates? Simple email to the admissions email address?

You can email the update straight to the admissions email (with update letter in the subject line). You can either type the update straight into the email, or attach it as a document.

There are two waitlists. Last year, I was put on the 'Regular Alternate' category. You are put in the special high priority category, which means that you are in the top category of people from which they will look to send acceptances to in the Spring. Not everyone will get one, but if you demonstrate continual interest in Jefferson (every couple months email them with a short update on your activities/life/interest in them), then it is very likely that you will get accepted. Many, many people from the special high priority waitlist get accepted.

As for the Regular alternate waitlist, it is much less likely (which is where I was last year)

Also for accepted people, Jefferson says "To hold your seat in the class, a $100 deposit is required before April 30th. This deposit is deductible from the first tuition payment." There is also an option to click "I accept the offer" or "I do not accept the offer". Do we have to click this soon, or can it wait till April?

So, it seems there isn't any movement from this list to the acceptance list until spring time from your experience last year. Congrats on the A, by the way.

You need to pay and accept the offer in order for you to retain your seat. If you don't accept and pay, you lose the seat within 14 days. Nothing you say is binding until AMCAS opens select your medical school tool in the spring

Hi everyone! From the comments above it seems that Jefferson likes updates. I will be presenting my thesis statement and +1 another study in November at a conference. Is it worth updating them about it? or should I wait until post-presentation?
any advice will be appreciated🙂
