Pre II hold yesterday complete late july. Will this ever turn into an II?

Congrats! Did they call or email? I interviewed that week too, now I'm nervous haha
I just received an email with the subject "UMSOM - post-interview status update" with the message body "The Committee on Admissions has made a decision on your application. Please log into the system and click on 'Admissions Decision'"

No phone call yet

Ok. I was placed on hold pre-II. Gonna put my stats here too. GPAc: 3.89, GPAs: 3.72, MCAT: 514, 2k clinical hours, over 1k volunteering hours, one year of research experience (which I hated). I'm also IS and a UMD grad (2021). I know this is presumptuous, but I was mildly surprised I was put on hold. I know two people with lower stats than me who both got IIs, one of whom got an acceptance. On one hand I'm extremely disappointed, but I'm also not entirely surprised. I've heard lots of horror stories over the past few years about people with 517 MCATS and 3.9 GPAS who don't get an II or an A from UMSOM. I'm also not surprised because I honestly don't think I'm a good fit for UMSOM, so if they reviewed my app holistically they might have gotten that impression too.

Does anyone have any idea about the likelihood of getting an II when put on hold?
this may be an ignorant question, but how would you know you're not a "good fit" for UMSOM, objectively speaking?

Also, pre-II hold on 11/10

Out of curiosity, has anyone heard if anyone has been rejected pre-interview, or are the options just either pre-interview hold or interview?

Sorry about the pre-II hold!! Not an ignorant question at all. I'm not sure if I can answer this objectively! I can relate my own personal feelings though!

Most of the schools I applied to I chose based off of mission and available opportunities for service, patient interaction through clinics and other opportunities, and excellent rotation sites. I also chose schools that I thought shared a lot of my values and perspective on medicine and healthcare. I did not choose schools with a strong research focus. I chose schools with a strong focus on the underserved and community service/engagement. Conversely, I applied to UMSOM because it's my state school, not because I felt a strong connection to the school's mission. IMO research is pretty important to UMSOM. I have a really hard time talking about my research experience in a positive way and I think, despite my best efforts, that came through on my secondary.

Now, I am not suggesting that UMSOM does not have good values, opportunities for patient interaction, a focus on community service, or good rotation sites. I just preferred those of other schools I applied to. I felt I didn't connect with UMSOM's mission as much, and my lack of enthusiasm for research didn't help. I really prefer the art of medicine over the science of medicine, and that's something I stressed a lot in my secondary and in my personal statement. I'm not sure that vibes with UMSOM (pardon my word choice here lol).

Granted, this is all my opinion and perspective on UMSOM. It is still an excellent school with great opportunities. Others might have entirely different perspectives on UMSOM and disagree with me completely, and that's totally ok! I'm also sorry if my answer sounds ignorant or uneducated!

Thought it's kind of funny that I think the exact opposite. The reason I'm so into Maryland is that they are unreal at teaching clinical medicine. That is a massive reputation of theirs and I've heard it from pre-med advisors, students, and doctors alike. The perspective I've heard is that not many schools offer the same level of clinical opportunity (at T20 schools you watch the expert resident do surgery than try it once, while at Maryland you get to do that procedure many many times). Although I'll admit, on paper, this is hard to see, it definitely is one of their major strengths.

I agree with this! I also feel that UMSOM does have a major commitment to the community & underserved populations. service learning is built into their curriculum & everyone that I know that attends the school has talked about how much they love the emphasis on this stuff. also during my interview, both the student & faculty interviewer stressed their love for community service & the emphasis UMSOM places on it! I didn't feel like it was hyper focused on research at all but that's just my two cents

These are both very fair points. I am glad that y'all have and can provide this insight.

for those who have already interviewed, did you see a checkmark next to each interviewer to show that the interview was completed? I only have one checkmark and missing one for my faculty interviewer.

Mine did that too, I emailed them and they just said that the portal is glitchy sometimes 🙂 As long as you went to both interviews lol you should be totally fine!

WL today, interviewed 11/16. It seems like there's no need to confirm that I want to stay on the waitlist, but can anyone confirm this? I don't want to mess it up haha

Applied early September -- still haven't heard anything (no hold, no rejection, no II). OOS, pretty okayish stats (LM 71, gradGPA 3.9, MCAT 514). Does anyone know how late they are interviewing this year? Feeling like no news might still be good news for the next few weeks, but feeling like we're probably nearing the end of II season? Anyone else have any thoughts/feelings/vibes one way or the other?

I think they have at least 3+ months to go. There has been a 20%+ increase in applications this year so that may be contributing to the delay. You have great stats so hang in tight. It’s not over until it’s over!

Placed on hold 11/10. Does anyone know how far they are in reviewing apps and how many more potential IIs there are to give out? I'm in-state btw

Does Maryland accept pre-II updates? I don't see anything in the thread or portal that says decisively yes/no. Leaning yes because they have the document upload tool but just want to be sure.

i'm pretty sure they do given the document upload option. i just went for it. but i was wondering if you or anyone else were able to view the document after uploading it? everytime i click on the document i uploaded, it sends me to the main log-in screen

I just uploaded it and it's doing the same bump to the login screen for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyone accepted here get the certiphi background check email yet?
According to MSAR, Maryland doesn’t conduct background checks so I’d assume you wouldn’t get the certiphi email unless you get accepted/waitlisted from another school that conducts background checks.

Ohhh, completely skipped over that haha. Thanks for the info!

Got an interview coming up. Anyone have any tips/ does the fact that it’s in late Janruary make getting an acceptance less probable?

September vs January has little impact on your chances of A/W/R.

In my experience, interview was conversational. Be yourself and you’ll do great. You worked hard to earn this invite, and they just want to hear your story. Best of luck!
