2020-2021 SUNY - Upstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
On the main portal page it says: "Your application is under committee review, and you will be notified as soon as a decision has been made."

But when I click on the Fall 2021 link, it says "Ready For Committee."
My main portal doesn't say anything, and under Fall 2021 it says: "Hold: Re-review after 12/1." ... Any idea how long their interview season generally runs?

I was asking because I interviewed 12/16 and we hadn't heard back yet. In regards to being on hold, I hope you get some good news ASAP!

Does anyone have any advice / info in regards to applying for scholarships?

bruh this is ridic. U down to call again? I don't have the cajones, feel like it's a bad look lmao
I like to think I have the cajones and then I think about the potential repercussions of calling again and I realize I do not.

If none of us have heard anything, that's probably a good sign. If I called again I'm sure they're gonna say the same thing: "covid has pushed the process back further than we had hoped but hopefully you will find out in the next couple of weeks."

mine says decision made. I wouldn't make any assumptions on what the portal says just yet, I haven't seen a definitive relationship between what it says and what it means

12/14 Portal cleared. Nothing there. Looks like im prob taking an L
Would you mind clarifying what you mean by portal cleared? Mine still says under committee review on the main portal and then "ready for committee" when I click on my app.

"under committee review" is no longer displayed on main portal. Ready for committee now says decision made

Is anyone else's portal not working?? I want to see my decision

Hello everyone,

First off, Congrats to all who are accepted already and good luck to the others! I am a high school senior, I recently got accepted to Upstate's BSMD program. . I have a couple of questions regarding the Binghamton campus. How do they allocate you for the campuses? Do we have a choice? My acceptance is only for 2025 ( after my UG) But I read that we have to decide on it within the first couple of weeks of M1. How do we decide?

Also, SUNY Upstate was indeed my first choice being instate ( low UG tuition and good research opportunities and my cousin sister graduated from there and she loved it) but now I have interview invites for VCU and have moved to the final stages of AMC. I also have Downstate which will announce by March end. Now that I am accepted to Upstate, I feel like I am so done with all this and just want to withdraw my other applications and commit to Upstate. My parents keeps reminding interviews are a good experience and that since its virtual just to attend it. I hear them but I feel after years of all the prep work, I just want a few months to be relaxing with friends before going away to college.

My question is, do you guys know about these other medical schools in detail? Is VCU medical school much better than Upstate? I feel I will get more opportunities in Upstate than in AMC, plus less tuition. But VCU ranking is much higher than Upstate. Is that such a big deal? I really like Downstate medical.( my dad went there) In your opinion how does Upstate compare with Downstate and VCU? I am just figuring out is it worth to attend the interview or to just skip those. Thank you so much in advance.

Congrats!!! When did you interview?

Do they ask MMI questions or it's mostly conversational? Thanks.
+1. For those who interviewed already, was the past years' Upstate interview feedback page representative of the type of questions they asked this cycle?

Its conversational. They ask you basic behavioral interview questions. Its not too intense about a 2/10 stress wise.

When did you guys find out the interviewers and get the Zoom link? My interview is tomorrow and I haven't heard anything lol I'm scared the email went to spam or something

Has anyone who interviewed on 12/14 or 12/16 heard back today?

Speficially to answer your question about the campuses (Binghamton and Syracuse), for MD applicants and people applying for matriculation right away, they usually tell you at the interview to select a preference right after your interview day (I think it's through MyUpstate, but don't quote me). The options for campuses are typically Binghamton or Syracuse ONLY or Binghamton or Syracuse Preferred, meaning you would be flexible on which campus you are willing to attend. I'm not sure how this works for BSMD.

If I remember correctly about 1/4 of the class goes to Binghamton for third year, and typically its based on your preferences you indicated after your interview or based on when you are accepted (If you are accepted later and select that you would prefer one place over the other, you may not get that preference). I think the best way to decide would be to talk to people that have gone to each campus for third year, and I'm sure if you reached out to admissions, they could put you in contact with people. I'll be starting third year in May, and then I may be able to answer your question with more experience-based knowledge when I start.

In general (from what I've heard): In Syracuse you tend to spend more time on rotation and learn more in person, but in Binghamton you have more time to study outside of the clinic, so shelf scores tend to be very similar. At Syracuse there are a lot more medical trainees (residents and fellows) whereas in Binghamton there are definitely fewer. This means at Binghamton you would have less interaction with other trainees further along in the process, but you probably will get to know the attendings better. At Binghamton you definitely need a car or some reliable transportation (Uber/Lyft or carpool if you don't have your own car), but I've heard it's probably easier to go to Syracuse if you don't have a car because you can walk most of the time. With everything moving virtual now, a lot of research opportunities have been made virtual, however, if you are really into research you would probably have more in-person opportunities at Syracuse. Also I recently found out that if you are in Binghamton and want to do an elective that is only offered in Syracuse, you can stay in Geneva for the duration of your elective so you don't have to pay double rent.

I agree with your parents; these interviews are a pretty good learning experience, especially since you are a high school senior.
But more than that, if you get into AMC/VCU, you could compare financial aid and maybe get Upstate to match a more generous package.

As for Upstate vs. Downstate, Downstate has a more diverse patient population and a more hands-on clinical education. Upstate is definitely in a nicer area, has a lower cost of living, and much nicer/newer buildings. I definitely like NYC more than Syracuse; there's just so much more going on here. My friend was in Downstate's BS/MD program and didn't like Brooklyn college at all.

Thank you Justkeepswimming and Archemia for your replys. I am taking notes as these are only a for a few years after. VCU UG tuition was almost double than the Upstates UG, so I withdrew because of that reason. NYIT DO I withdrew so did AMC's. Downstate's has not yet come, who knows I would even get one but in case if I get, I might attend the interview just because...Thank you again so much.

Got placed on something called the High Priority Alternate list today? Interviewed 1/13, NYC resident LM 74 WDARS C. Anyone have any info about the HPA list and acceptance percent?
