2020-2021 UNC - Chapel Hill

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My application portal recently changed to saying "Awaiting Decision." I interviewed 9/21, any idea if this means anything?
I haven't received an II yet and my secondary application portal also updated this, so maybe this just got around to fixing their secondary portal/making it actually helpful? that or they about to start dropping decisions 😳

Current UNC med student, let me reassure you guys on a couple of things. 1. The online portal status means absolutely nothing, so don't worry if it changed/didn't change/whatever. It doesn't mean you're in or out or anything else. As far as I know, no decisions have been sent out yet. 2. In terms of the post-II emails some people have gotten, this is also not a sign of anything. I am one of the people that sends those emails, and I just got a list of applicants yesterday who interviewed weeks ago. But they are having students send those emails and not everyone will see their list/send those emails at the same time. If you haven't gotten a post-II email yet offering to answer questions from a student perspective, you will. 3. If you haven't gotten an II yet, don't think its over. It can take a while to review all the apps, especially this year, and they are still sending out IIs.
All that being said, if you have questions I can answer as a current student, feel free to ask. I love to help 🙂

Thank you for all the clarification! For students that interviewed within this past week, do you think there is any chance that the decisions will be released before winter break?

I can't say for sure. It's possible, but everything is a bit delayed this year, so I would think its more likely you won't hear until the new year. When I went through the process 2 years ago, my friend interviewed early Nov and heard just before Christmas; I interviewed early Dec and didn't hear until March. That year they only did two releases, one in Dec and one in March, but they were making big changes to the interview process that year, much like they are this year because of COVID. Its possible the timeline may look similar this year, though I don't know for sure. I know waiting is the worst, most stressful part of the whole process, but it'll be worth it when you get an acceptance!

Some of us interviewed in Sept and have not heard back... at least it is not R yet... but are you saying they are interviewing several batches of applicants and then decide? Some already have been admitted.

My general understanding (and I'm not on adcomm) was that they might pick a few definite yeses after interviews and admit them quickly, and they probably have a few definite nos (though I don't think they send out Rs til march usually), but the vast majority of people fall in the middle category and have to wait a while for an answer. I believe they typically send out the first round of As on the early interviews before winter break, but plenty of people from those early interviews get As in March too along with people who interviewed later. Unfortunately, its impossible to predict what they're going to do, especially this year when everything is delayed and upside down :/

I really appreciate your responses to us. I know it is more waiting but having a human to briefly exchange reduces some anxiety and impatience. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful guidance and for the time you take to help clarify the process and to provide reassurance. It is beyond helpful. You are going to be an outstanding doctor!

Aw thank you! I had good people that helped me get through the whole process, so I'm happy to help others get through it too 🙂

Who else has their status as “Awaiting Decision”? Does this mean currently under active review?

has anyone here been accepted and also a reapplicant? just curious 🙂 thank you!

When do my fellow Nov. 9th interviewees think we will hear back? O__O
I'm a 9 NOV interviewee. My guess is mid December. Probably around 4 weeks or so at the earliest. Please keep me posted and let me know if you hear anything and I will do the same.

I think (still not on adcomm) they will likely release a round of decisions just before the Christmas holidays (because from what I've heard they usually do). Most of the people that are accepted from the sept and oct groups will likely hear before the holidays (though not all, there will also be people from those groups that get answers in the new year). Whether the 11/9 interviewees will get decisions is kind of borderline, though I will say when I applied, my friend was in the first week of nov and got an answer with the dec release. When we applied though, a lot of people got like a deferral, where they basically said we're still considering your app, and they didn't get decisions until march (that year they only did 2 rounds of decisions).

Has anybody received a decision within a month or less of interviewing?

Has anyone received a rejection letter? Cause I haven't heard anything at all from them since submitting the secondary. 🙁

When is their last interview date in 2021?
They usually interview into early February. Maybe this year it will go a little later since everything's been delayed, but probably not too much later.

They are still reviewing apps and sending out IIs, so depending on when you submitted yours they might not have gotten to it yet.

Can you call and see if your application has been reviewed or not?
That's a bad idea. I know it's tough waiting, but many people are in the same boat as you. The adcoms will not want to give you special treatment and may even be annoyed. Especially at UNC, in my experience (always been a short tolerance for my questions there and I'm a UNC undergrad). You don't really want annoyed adcoms reviewing your stuff. Stay strong, friend. News will come.

Nope. They mentioned during the interview that they don’t want to receive any emails/calls asking about the status of applications. They were pretty strict about that.

I know how hard it is to be told there's nothing you can do but wait. This is an incredibly stressful process, but you will all get through it. Believe me, when you get an acceptance, this will all be worth it. Hang tight, gang! We're rooting for you!
