2020-2021 UT Houston ( McGovern)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So, I saw this question asked before, but I didn't see an answer, so I'll ask it again, if anyone has an idea: is McGovern considered more pre-match or more match heavy?
It only matters whether you have been interviewed before Match Day. Rank schools as you will. If you have not been interviewed at a school by match day the game is over 🙁

It is believed that they don't make decisions easily or quickly and so everyone has a good chance. So as @wysdoc says, being interviewed is most important.

You also have to remember whether they admit more prematch or during match depends a lot on what other offers people are getting and ranking ahead or below McGovern. If McGovern admits 100 people prematch and 50 go elsewhere during match, they become available during match. So don't assume that just because they have admitted more than some arbitrary number prematch, all those seats are locked in and therefore unavailable.

Did you happen to ask if they would be okay with emailing a letter of intent? Only concern I have with doing so is in the application completion email they sent it states that they do not accept any updates sent directly to the school. So don't know if that would come across as not following directions or being impatient. @wysdoc can you please school me with your wisdom on what you think?
So I will say I specifically called to ask if they accepted letters of intent and they told me they do. They instructed me they are to be sent to a woman who works in the admissions office. I emailed her and she told me she would put it in my file. (Though my letter of intent was sent after interviewing, fyi)

this may be a stupid question, but what would a letter of intent consist of? & should i send one now or after Match Day incase i don't pre-match or match. i would 100% attend McGovern if they accepted me.

also, the AACOMAS deposit deadline is due next Monday so i'm really hoping they send pre-matches this week so i don't lose out on $750 lol.

So I'm by no means an expert. I only take advice from mentors and can speak from my situation. My letter was sent after I completed all my interviews and even had already pre-matched somewhere else and essentially consisted of me detailing my experience with the school and why I think I would be a good fit. Spoke about any interactions I had with staff that stuck with me, etc. Stated that it's my top choice and whatnot. There is much debate about how much letters of intent actually do, but my thinking is that if it doesn't hurt, then why not? Especially since I am a very strong writer. Like I said, I called to make sure it was okay and was given the green light so I figured I may as well. When my file is reevaluated it will presumably be seen by the committee.

i appreciate it, thank you!!

Has there been any recent ii after Nov 13? I think that was the last I saw or around that time

Was today likely the last day of interview invites for McGovern?

There will be more interview invites as the cycle progresses and cancellations arise, however, expect IIs to be extended on a much smaller basis as February nears. Schools will begin shifting to offering IIs to a small group of individuals to fill cancellations rather than sending out large batches at a time like we saw earlier in the cycle. But hope isn’t lost yet!

Well, that was interesting. I just had a talk with one of my mentors, telling him I had an interview here because this was his Alma mater. He told me that everyone is mean on clinicals, particularly at MD Anderson, calling it "House syndrome, " and told me I'd be happier elsewhere since I want to do primary care. He's in his 60s, so are there any current students who can speak to the culture here, especially from attendings in clinical years? I'm hoping maybe things have become more positive.

Has anyone received an II who was complete late October? Wondering if my app has been passed up... 🙁 Is the last date of interviews Jan 29th?

I would say it has changed since then judging by students I know at McGovern. MD Anderson is a more common training ground for residents and fellows than med students.

I have a few friends who are recent graduates of McGovern and they've told me their experience with attendings in clinical years was great, with rare exceptions when they'd work with a grumpy attending. Sure, they're busy and usually very well respected because of the quality of the institutions McGovern partners with, but if they work at a teaching hospital they do so by choice. For the most part, they like teaching and they like students. I think it's safe to say that the culture is different from what it was 35-40 years ago.

Thank you both. I really appreciate you addressing this. I definitely wanted to verify, but I knew things could change dramatically in that length of time. Never changed from being excited about this interview, but still wanted to do my due diligence.

MD Anderson is just another hospital in Houston where one will do some rotations and may be get research opportunities but it is not their primary hospital for every rotation.
their training hospital is Memorial Hermann and there are residents and MS3&4’s all over - source: i work in their ED

their MS1’s do preceptorships all over Houston - source: I’m engaged to an MS1

if I was complete in early august LM 74, should I just not get my hopes up anymore?

Does anyone remember what they said during the interview day about whether they allow post-II updates?

To any current students, has COVID negatively affected your experience at McGovern? Just curious.

As a current MS1, I will say that our class and faculty are trying hard to make the best out of a depressing situation. I still remember earlier this year how excited I was for orientation and meeting new people before the craziness of medical school had begun. Unfortunately, everything going virtual has put a major damper on all of that. Many of us do set up online meetups and lean hard on social media to stay in touch with each other, but it’s not the same. Of course, I do know that everything being virtual this semester was totally necessary, because safety of students and staff is paramount. It’s not worth it for me or others to have an indoor party and then go to the hospital.

I will say that the faculty is doing their best to provide a quality education despite the limitations. Class morale is improving as we look forward to the next semester, when we will finally be able to meet up in small, socially distanced groups, which is a major upgrade from our current situation. Knowing that the vaccines will be distributed to our school at some point in the near future has also been encouraging. We are planning to do our “make-up” mixers and events once it’s safe to do.

Tl;dr - It’s a bit sad not meeting in person, but it’s necessary for student/faculty safety. Everyone is doing their part to make our time here worthwhile despite the limitations. We are optimistic about the future.
