2021-2022 Thomas Jefferson (Kimmel)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has there been any IIs this month or have they just not been reported on sdn
If it happened but wasn't reported here, how would we know about it? 🙂

Participation on SDN is widespread enough that it's a pretty safe bet that any news would be reported. After all, when a school like Michigan sends out as few as one or two dozen notifications, invariably there are at least one or two people reporting receiving one on SDN.

That's pretty impressive when you consider that we're talking about 10 or 20 people out of literally over 7,000 in the case of Michigan. I promise you it works exactly the same way with Jeff.

Hey yall! Current M2 at Jeff, if you have any questions about the program or admissions I can try and help out! Good luck to everyone applying!

Interviewing in October and have heard the interview is a lot about determining "fit". What kind of characteristics would you say make for a good fit at Jeff ?
I would say there is not an overall 'type' that goes here. The interviewers just want to know that you are affable and can get along with the rest of your incoming class. Overall the vibe for the school is chill and they want to see that you are a normal human being. I am not sure if they are doing student interviews this year b/c of COVID, but my student interviewer and I spoke mostly about what I liked to do outside of school, what I did to blow off steam, if I had a free couple of days what would I do, etc. I would say just be nice, be passionate about what you are talking about (mostly hobbies b/c they will come up), and show them that you can get along with others.

Great school btw, med school is hard anywhere but I feel supported and mentors for most specialties (esp surgical subs) are everywhere.

Thanks for the info! The schedule in the email says that they will be doing one 30 min student interview and one 45 minute faculty/ADCOM interview.

That's really refreshing to hear. Are there any formal mentorship opportunities between faculty and students or even senior and junior students? I'm interested in surgical subspecialties, so that's pretty exciting to know 😀

There is a formal mentorship program where you pick the top 3 specialties you are interested and they pair you up with an interested faculty member. There are also student mentorship programs as well. Ortho and ophtho are our big ones (Rothman and Wills eye) but Jeff's Gen surg, ENT, urology, and NSG programs are also very good.

I'm thinking of adding the school to my AMCAS, is it too late in the cycle or do I still have a chance if I submit the secondary quickly?

I just added it two days ago - I think if you have the money go for it? Of course people who have submitted before us will have the advantage but that doesn't mean we don't have a chance. Their secondary is only two questions so you will be able to submit it very quickly. Good luck 🙂

You always have a chance, anywhere, right up to the application deadline. The question you have to ask yourself is why they weren't on your original list, and what is your motivation for thinking about adding them now?

If they are less than an ideal fit, if they are not on your list of top 20 or 30 choices, and if you are just panicking a little because it's 8/27 and you are less than thrilled with your results to date, adding a notorious low yield school the week before Labor Day might not be the answer to your prayers.

OTOH, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take, so, if you have $122 burning a hole in your pocket and you never want to be in a position of asking yourself "what if?", you should go for it. It's definitely not too late. JMHO. Either way, good luck!!

I actually just asked a similar question on Reddit last night (just about if it's worth sending schools primaries at the end of August). The consensus was "shoot your shot while it's still August." Remember, secondaries submitted up until Labor Day are still generally considered early. And there could be many reasons for a gap between primary verification and sending to a school (e.g., waiting for MCAT, LORs, financial reasons, etc).

Hey there! I was wondering if you could describe how (if at all) lessons on healthcare disparities/health equity/patient advocacy/SDOH are integrated into the curriculum at SKMC

There is a whole separate curriculum associated with health care systems/health equity/patient advocacy. These range anywhere from lectures from faculty to patient panels where they come in and talk about their disease/experience in life. They honestly maybe have done too good of a job with this and sometimes feel like they overdo it since there is a lot to learn and it eats into my daily workflow.

Also here to help out! I'm a current M1 at Jeff and I used SDN a lot while applying so if anyone has any questions feel free to PM me or ask on this thread. Will gladly answer or try to find an answer for you.

Just editing this in to confirm that they are doing student interviews this year 🙂

I'm surprised that neither me nor any of my friends have heard from Jefferson. We are all in-state. Several of us live in the Philly area, and we are all substantially above Jefferson's stats (LM 75+). Plus, all our applications have different focuses (clinical, research, service, etc.). Not just Jefferson, but Drexel, and Penn state have also been completely silent.

We've all gotten II's to Temple Pitt and Penn (varied between us), so Jefferson definitely surprises me!
It does seem as if Jefferson has given relatively few interviews rn though.

I'm in the same boat. Not in state but nearby. I got an II from Temple but nothing from Drexel or Jefferson (didn't apply to Penn State).

I know that Jefferson is super low yield but I feel like the other two are, as well?

Drexel does seem to resource protect though, so if you and your friends' stats are too high they might not bother.

This whole process just seems so random - I have a very service-oriented app and 2 of my interviews are from very community-focused schools but my one pre-II rejection is from a similar school. It just seems like there's no way to know what's going to happen at this point, but fingers crossed for you all!

Those schools get a lot of apps so yield protection is a very real possibility.

I wouldn't know how to confirm this, but I received my interview at Jeff over a month ago and at that moment the soonest available slots were in mid November. It didn't seem to me that they had sent few interview invites by then..

According to the interview tracker, Jefferson was one of the first schools to send out interviews (in mid July lol)

I'm not entirely sure how it varies by school, but at my friends and I noticed last cycle that some school's interview timeline changed depending on when the II was sent out. For example, on sdn a few people said that Weill Cornell had interviews booked till november in September itself. However, I got my II at Weill in early November and scheduled my interview for mid-November.

Even this cycle, my friend got her II to Temple two weeks ago, and her first available date was tomorrow. Yet, I got an II 5 days ago and my first available date was yesterday.

Fun fact: My friend last cycle received an II only to Jefferson and ended up accepted there.

Does anyone know if Jefferson takes application updates pre-II? I am beginning a job as Patient Experience Coordinator at Jefferson, so I would like to send them that information if possible.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I think this insight can brighten the hopes for a lot of applicants across a large number of schools. It’s easy to assume that the II process is linear but this goes to show that much of the time, it’s not.

I had a similar experience. Got an II several weeks ago and the first available date for me to book was in December!

wow so when do they stop interviewing then? considering this school has a bunch of applicants, they probably already know who they will send invites to or not? (desperate spectulations )

I’ve said this in other threads too, but in past cycles (pre 2020), most admissions offices would receive a wave of cancellations after October 15. For most people, traveling just didn’t make sense after getting an acceptance to a proffered school due to expenses, time etc. This means that a huge wave of slots would open up in late October and November.

Now, however, I assume that this will be very different. People will be more inclined to accept all interviews to compare financials and such.

Hmmm, I guess it makes sense that later in the fall students will start withdrawing from some schools that they have interviews from

Can anyone who interviewed today comment on their experience? Interviewing in 2 weeks and want to know what to expect

When were you guys complete at Temple? Philly-area resident wondering.
