I have a few friends who live downtown and like it, but I personally don't care much for the area. The parking is kind of a mess when you have friends visit, and most of the apartments have thin walls (so, it's really loud on weekends). Most of the students tend to like The Hill, South Grand/Tower Grove, and Central West End. I've lived in the Kirkwood/Crestwood/Webster Groves area for the past two years and absolutely love it. All have pluses and minuses... something for everyone. It just depends on your personality and what's really important to you.
I don't recommend the Salus Center. It's a couple blocks from the med school, and I don't know of any students who use it. The new track on the med school campus is a fairly popular workout area as well as the gym on the undergrad campus (it's like a 5 minute drive... some students run there).

Anyone have some info about the Salus Fitness Center? I heard it is on the med school campus...

Never been but don't think it has much. Everyone goes to the undergrad gym (Simon Rec Center). The Grand Bridge will have a few lanes open soon so we'll have easier access to the undegrad from the med campus.

So the SLU application site was pretty much inaccessible all day yesterday, I am guessing that was caused by the committee looking over the documents of the people on the alternate list. Have any of you guys seen any change on the website since your interview? I am guessing that maybe they changed some people's options but haven't sent out the email yet.

I have no changes, but some wishful thinking...

I have no changes either....I hope their waitlist is still moving. I find it hard to believe that SO few SDN members have gotten off...

Wow, what's up with SDNers not getting in off the wait list this year? Is the wait list being handled differently than previous years or is SDN just less popular than it has been in the past?

I'm just hoping they're taking extra time to look over everybody's updates. God knows i sent in about a thousand of them.

haha, just got an email from them, had a moment of panic, but then saw it was just about their document update uploader. 😛

Withdrew from this school a few weeks ago, I got off a wait list elsewhere. Otherwise I was pretty excited to come to SLU. It seems like they should be ranked higher than what they are.

Thanks for the input.

As for the roommate situation...

Who thinks that it's "unsafe" to live alone in St. Louis? In other words, if one lives alone, does this increase the risk of experiencing some sort of crime? I happen to think not, but other people think so.:meanie:

hey guys,

Just asked around a bit and it seems like the WL has moved and is moving... maybe we will all get in at once lol. I've personally only heard of about 4-5 people getting off.

Yeah I got a similar message from them today too. It's all very reassuring, until I hang up the phone, and then the worrying starts up again.

Along those lines, I was on a couple of wait lists this year, but no acceptances yet.

Can anyone give me a recommendation regarding a couple of things in case I am not accepted this year:

1. I've been thinking of trying to get a low-level job in a hospital as a tech for the next year, and have already applied for a few, as a means to show my commitment to medicine. Any ideas on what would be an ideal position under the circumstances?

2. At what point would you call it a day and re-apply for 2013?

Thanks!

1. In this economy, the best job is the one you can get.

2. not necessarily give up all hope, but get ready to reapply at the end of next week if nothing's happened.

Not unsafe to live alone in STL. As a STL native, I currently live alone and have had no safety issues. If you live near SLU it's not as bad as hyped. If you come from crazy privilege it will be an eye opener, for sure, but you'll be fine. If anything you're taking a chance someone will break in your car. Less likely that you'll personally be in danger. That being said, never smart to leave anything (even change) in your car downtown. Some leave their car doors open so that way potential thrives will just open it up and see there is nothing and move on rather than bust out a window. That is generally for more dangerous areas than CWE or tower grove. The guy who lives in Crestwood is clever. Add 15 min to commute, but it's a very safe suburban area there. The city line is an imaginary line that makes a difference crime wise. Exception: Lemay is going to be virtually the same as the city crime rate wise.

"The waitlist is still active and we are accepting people every day"

......yeaaah

So if we do not hear by tomorrow, would you start the ball rolling on AMCAS 2012-2013?

Sorry, I forgot to post. I was taken off the waitlist last week, so it is definitely moving. Hang in there, I think it moves all through July, so don't give up hope.

Hey that's awesome! I have no idea who you are, but your avatar has become familiar enough that I feel like a good friend just got in. Congrats!

PM me your stats, too, if you aren't too shy about it.

digitalsea will you be attending?

Certainly! I had an absolutely wonderful experience when I visited SLU, and I am very familiar with the city. 😍

EDIT: For those on the WL, I obsessively looked through threads, and I would say that there is typically another surge in early July. I think it takes a few meetings to get everything organized, but I noticed this pattern with several schools, so hang in there! Also, make sure to send your final transcripts if you haven't already!

that's great! I hope I will be your classmate next year 😀 One of the SDNers called and said the WL is moving every day, so hopefully it's just a matter of time.

Does anyone know the average utilities cost in St. Louis (based on prior experience)?

More information might be helpful. Utilities vary dramatically depending on the place you live: its size, its age, whether it is free-standing, whether you're one of these 68° in the summer A/C people. 🙂

The place I am renting is a 1BR apartment in an older two-family dwelling. Last year's bills showed an average of probably about $120, with spikes in the high summer and winter.

One cool thing is that in the city, free trash, recycling, and yard waste bins are all over.

A friend rents a few duplexes out in the SLU area (he's full so don't ask lol) but I shot him a text to see if he could get some data from some his tenants.

Awesome. Thanks.

I was thinking newer, 1200sqft unit, 2bed/2bath.

Thanks. Let me know if you get a response.

It's crazy subjective due to personal preference and quality of construction, but my friend says his places in the tower grove area are averaging ~90-100 for gas and electric a month. ~1000 sq ft.
Again tho, that's subjective.

Who here thinks SLUSOM should be ranked higher than what the US World News Report ranks it (not that ranks really matter, ultimately)?

Accepted off the waitlist today! I am so fortunate, I love it.

The waitlist is a lie

Haha, sorry I can't help but laugh at the sequence of these posts. But seriously, this cycle stinks for waitlisted applicants. Also, does anyone else think that there seems to be greater waitlist movement at the "higher tier" schools? Or is it just me?

yeah, that's funny. great timing. It had been so long with no apparent movement, but i guess it's a-movin for real

I'd keep hope. I'd have to think a small fraction of SLU wait list people are on SDN and I'd think many of them are not necessarily going to post that they got in when they get the news. I would assume that after I apply (and hopefully get in) I'd have better celebratory things to do than post it on SDN. And so will you sephiroth. 🙂

The only reason I posted so quickly is because I know how annoying it is when nobody posts for weeks and you have no idea where you stand.

Is the university scholarship of $5,000 to $10,000 a scholarship or something we have to pay back?

It is a scholarship. No strings attached. And what you get the first year is the minimum you're guaranteed the rest of the time as long as you feel out the FAFSA (but you can apply for future years for more if you don't get a scholarship or only get $5000). In addition to the scholarship, there's also a school loan at a lower interest rate that's offered to some that does need to be repaid.
