Really? Who gets the $20?

The student host does; it's quite reasonable when you consider that they're interrupting their studying/social lives to host, often provide meals/have to clean/etc., often drive to get students from the airport (easily a 20-30 min. drive one-way from anywhere in STL), and usually feel obligated to take the student to sight see or to dinner.

Mind if I ask what year you are? I know a bunch of M3s and a handful of M2s. Also, I think the count for that building fire is something like 16 students including residents.

I'm an M3 (just started rotations a couple weeks ago). It was 15 students and 6 residents that were affected by the fire (21 total).

Oh I agree that $20 is reasonable.. moreso for the applicant than for the med student though. A cab ride from lambert to SLU is ~$40 one way.

Cool. I wonder if I know who you are.

Just a warning:

If you fill out the secondary essays using Safari, hard returns do not show up when you hit preview. I had to use Firefox for it to format correctly.

Thanks for that tip👍 Hard returns didn't show up for me in Google Chrome either but Firefox did the trick.

Just submitted, good luck all

About to submit but ran into a problem when I hit the "preview" button. My optional "why SLU" essay which has a couple paragraphs shows up in just one big block of text with not spacing between paragraphs. Tried adding spaces, indenting, but it always shows up as just one monster paragraph. Anyone else have this issue?

see my post above. did you try it in firefox?

Does the optional essay need to be "Why SLU?" I have an essay I'd like to use about some personal experiences (essentially a diversity essay) - do you guys think that'd be okay?

Also does the optional essay not have a word/character limit?

Oh wow haha don't know how I missed that. Hopefully I can proofread my essays better than I can scan a thread 😀

That's fine, it's there for you to provide whatever info you want. I did the same thing and just briefly touched on why SLU at the end of my essay but that's not a requirement.

My essay was pretty long but it went through so I don't think there's a limit, at that least not that I'm aware of..

Submitted! I may be a lifelong Cubs fan, but I wouldn't mind moving to St. Louis for you SLU

I didn't fill in the essay last year.

Make sure that if you do write about XYZ, that XYZ specifically relates to Why SLU. Otherwise, you may be better off letting the rest of the application do the talking as to why you are qualified to become a physician.

Good luck to all the applicants 🙂

Well, after a life of that you deserve to watch some winners play 🙂

I live in St. Louis and I've always heard that people in Chicago don't really care about cards vs cubs. They care more about cubs vs sox.. Is that true?

+1!

You are well informed but I grew up in central Illinois where its ALL about cubs vs cards.

And for all you cubs haters... There's always next year

I dunno. The more I think about it, I think the Mayans are ending it all just to avoid having to hear you cubs fans say that an 105th time.
Even Albert Einstein weighed in on this...

Still other people out there who haven't gotten the secondary yet?

My optional turned out to be 632 words with 3795 characters. Is that too long?

I'm torn on whether or not I should apply to SLU...

I applied two years ago and interviewed, but withdrew due to personal/academic reasons, and now am prepared to get on with my medical school life.

I'd be concerned they'd reject me simply because I withdrew and wasted their time last time... 🙁

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Quit pouting, your application looks great. You would have a great shot here, and at 80%+ of the rest of US MD schools.

If only it were that simple... Being a re-applicant already pushes you further to the edge, not to mention a post-interview withdrawal...

Welp, it doesn't matter, because I gave them my money. :luck:

For what it's worth, I thought the school was pretty nice when I was there--the students were incredibly friendly, and the staff and faculty were so welcoming. Wouldn't mind getting another shot!

Did anyone receive a "complete" email after submitting the secondary?

Just curious...but are there differences between the students of SLUSOM vs WashU SOM? In terms of friendliness, helpfulness, etc etc? Is one group more social than the other? If anyone has experiences interacting with the 2 different groups, any input would be appreciated...

The current M2 and M3 classes of SLUSOM are very different in terms of interests/friendliness/helpfulness etc. I don't know much about WashU students though. If you get into both, you might as well go to WashU though. It's a better school (obviously) and all the SLU and WashU students basically hangout in the same areas.

Do any SLU medical students know anything about Dr. Perman? He has a PhD in radiology.

Does anyone know what time the interview day ends? I want to make sure I am able to rearrange my flights around before I confirm a date. It says there is information about the interview in the "My Interview" section but I can't see anything there except the calendar. I assume it appears after I confirm a date but I don't want to do that until I am sure I can attend that date. Thanks!

As a whole, night and day. They have tried to have Wash U and SLU student mixers... it's easier to make an oil and vinegar dressing (seriously, whenever the two groups try to mix, the conversation lasts like 2 minutes before people go back to talking to their own classmates). Wash U is tends to be more focused on specialties, research, and objective scores; SLU leans more toward primary care (not to say a ton of people don't go into specialties) and "whole person." The personalities that are drawn to the two places are very different (and we really don't hang out the same places as implied above). If you interview both places, I think you'll understand. I know some are going to accuse me of making sweeping generalizations (I tried to use phrases like "tends to be"), but I would be incredibly unhappy if I attended Wash U because it wouldn't be a good fit for me.

SLUSOM has a student hosting program, but you have to pay $20 a night. It's odd I know, but the students take pretty good care of you (picking you up from airport if you need it, clean sheets, towels, driving to a fro school for interview).

do you know who we should contact for this? there's really no information on the site..

also same question as someone above, when does the interview day end? I want to fly back right after but I don't know what time to book the flight for

go to interview links

Cannot see it until I schedule a date but I don't want to schedule a date until I know I can make that date for sure. Can you let me know when the day ends if they tell you that in the interview links?

NVM I see there message about how if your interview is in the morning vs. afternoon. Haha...........

8-11 AM morning interview
11-12 PM Tour
12- 1 PM lunch
1-5pm afternoon interview

i think when your day ends pretty much depends on which interview you get (afternoon vs morning), which seems to be pretty random

Did anyone that received an interview have lower stats? It seems like everyone on here had a very high MCAT.

At this point I think most individuals getting interviews will have above matriculate level GPA and MCATs

Be patient.

This.

They are going to try to lock down the best applicants they can first. Many will possibly pick a different SOM to matriculate into. Don't fret that your spot will be taken by a 4.0 44T.

That's what I figured. I'm just trying to get a sense of this interview invitation group. It seems that they are the obvious shoe-ins for interviews.

Yeah, I tend to only 'compare' myself to those with similar stats. They tend to group people into categories like that. You're 'competing' with those that have similar stats to you, not those that are shoo-ins everywhere. Same idea with URM, they have spots for them, and if you're not URM you're not competing for those spots.

However, if you have higher stats, it's not to say that you can't get the boot from the whole process if they don't find you genuine. Likewise, if you have lower stats and you're a really good fit, you could be taking a place of a 'shoo-in'.
