2015-2016 Quinnipiac University (Netter) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@MedSprinter Does it ever stress you out or worry you to be part of a new school, given that there's no info on where the students will match or things like that? Personally, I don't know if I really care about where students are matching, but I don't know if I should start caring? Is this something that's more important than say, the set up of the curriculum or the clinical opportunities available? I really love Netter's curriculum and think that it matches well with how I view medical education, but I don't know if I should also be concerned about them not having a match list just yet.

Personally, this has never stressed me out nor worried me because the only residency I'm interested in that's really competitive is orthopaedics, however family medicine is high (perhaps higher come 3rd year) on my list. I know there are other students that are concerned about us being a new school and how that affects our residency prospects. If you are dead set on an ultra competitive residency such as dermatology, neurosurgery, ENT, etc. then you should definitely be concerned. One of our neurosurgery faculty members said that it would be difficult for a newly established school to match students into an ultra competitive residencies. However, he said it would not be impossible. The surgery clerkship director also said that our chances of matching into competitive residencies will depend on how well the 1st class matches. If they match well and establish a good reputation for our school, then future classes will benefit (assuming we maintain the good reputation).

If you aren't particularly dead set on an ultra competitive residency, I don't think you should worry. Perhaps I'm naive, but from what I've seen from the faculty in terms of their work ethic, teaching ability, and interest in helping us succeed, I believe our school will do well. Also, about 60% of my class' exams were composed of NBME questions and both the 1st class and our class scored above average nationally. Hopefully, we'll know the average Step I scores from the 1st class soon. I have only heard about a few of their scores, but so far they're all 250+. I suspect the students with higher scores would be more forthcoming with sharing their scores, however.

As to whether it's more important than the set up of the curriculum or the clinical opportunities available, I don't believe it is. Your individual accomplishments > school's match list for residencies. I enjoyed our curriculum a lot. It had a good mix of lectures and collaborative sessions that meshed well with the clinical curriculum. I was not a huge fan of the classes we had for our capstone project, however. It felt kind of like the old Protista kingdom, a kind of catch-all for classes on a potpourri of topics. We had biostatistics, a lecture on medical apps, primary care of the future demonstrations, etc. It's only once a week though. I don't know much about our clinical opportunities given that the 3rd years started just a month ago. I will say that a significant con about our school is that we don't have an attached hospital and we don't have a dedicated research building either (there is a building that has been designated for research that is being developed currently). The primary clinical site is about 45 minutes away from the school. Despite all this, there are many students that are doing clinical research for their capstone project/during the summer.

TLDR: I don't stress out about our lack of a match list and you shouldn't either by the time you graduate. Our school will have a reputation by then and your individual achievements will be more important. Curriculum and clinical opportunities > match list. You'll be a happier student in a school that fits and chances are you will perform better as well.

II this morning, also my first one!!! OOS, LizzyM~69, complete 7/8. Was feeling extremely burnt out from writing this seemingly never-ending chain of secondaries, so I took yesterday off. This was a great way to start the day today. Keep hope alive!

What dates did everyone select for their interviews?

So how does offering interviews work? I was complete on 7/8. If people who submitted after me are being offered interviews does that mean they will not be offering me one?

No, not necessarily. The fact that people who were complete after you have gotten interviews probably means that your application has already been read once, but that doesn't mean you won't get an interview. Many applicants don't get an interview after the first read of their applications, and then their applications get reread later and they get offered an interview. You truly just have to wait and see.

I don't think that's necessarily true, but I am curious about this as well...

See post #213 on this thread. I answered this question to the best of my abilities, but I can't say for sure that I'm right.

This is correct. There was a good 6+ months between when I was complete and when I got the II. The Admissions Committee will look at applications both new and old and offer II's for those that are promising. Many of my classmates interviewed late into the next year so don't get discouraged!

Is the second essay basically a diversity prompt? Since we're describing experiences that help us contribute to their school?

Does anyone know the ratio of II to acceptances? Looking at OOS statistics on the MSAR, there are 69 matriculants out of 294 interviewees. Of course, the school will accept more students than matriculants in order to fill all of their seats. Out of 294 OOS interviewees, how many are actually offered acceptances? I've heard most schools offer 2-3 times as many acceptances as interviewees in order to fill up their seats. Is this true with Quinnipiac? For early interviewees, is it more likely to get accepted, since you are the first pick of the crop to be interviewed?

3x times leaves good odds!

Hey guys I forgot to add this school when I applied to my initial list. Do you think it is too late to add this school now and still be ahead?

Define 'ahead'.

No one is really late at this point in the game. If you would like to go to this school, add it and wait for the secondary.

Good luck!

Thanks thankfully they already sent it to me!
Had you already added Quinnipiac then? Schools don't send secondaries to applicants who haven't marked them on the applicant's AMCAS.

Does Quinnipiac do a full review of your application, including carefully reading all of your LORs, before sending an interview invite? Or do they only look at the primary and secondary and only use LORs when they are deciding on an acceptance?

yup same for me
I got that for the longest time because I had selected "other" for the question that asked about how you had heard about Quinnipac. When I unchecked "other" the error went away.

anyone less than a 30 get an interview here. just submitted my secondary.

On my pile to finish the secondary. Sigh not really interested in primary care but like the school. I will see if I get screened out, but only if I can get to it this week.

Did everyone who got an II write about primary care?

No. I wrote about emergency medicine, cardiology, and infectious disease.

Phew, thanks for the reply lol. I have an interest in Primary Care, but more so in Oncology, which is why I wrote about that instead. I wasn't even thinking about the politics of everything when writing this secondary. Looking back, I should have included Primary Care.

I am filling out the secondary here today....really hoping for an II here.

Booked everything for interview weekend, maybe helpful for others from my experience trying to find the cheapest option- LGA and JFK aren't that far apart and if you need to rent a car (I'm making a weekend out of this), the car rentals from JFK are extraordinarily cheaper than renting from LGA

In general to rent a car you have to be 25 right?

Has anyone received rejections? Like I haven't received an II, so I'm trying to be optimistic by telling myself "well at least you haven't gotten a rejection" but does anyone know if they've even sent rejections out yet?
