2015-2016 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes, that's what I meant. Thanks
My guess would be as good as yours but, allowing a few days for the dust to settle, I would imagine wait lists for most schools should start moving soon.

Waitlist has started moving a bit. I know one person who was on the waitlist who was added to the facebook group today! I wouldn't lose hope, though, if you haven't heard. I'm sure *most* of the movement will be later in the week and next.

Ah, nervousness and anxiety, my old friends. We meet again.

Good luck everyone. May the withdrawals be abundant and the new acceptances plentiful.

Edit--Ignore the following sentence if you don't want to add to your existing neuroticism.

In 2015, it looks like most movement (based on SDN posts) happened within a couple days of last year's April 30th traffic day, with some additional movement later in May, and then pretty slow activity for the rest of the summer, with the final post being made in July.

I am truly behind you on your optimism. 🙂

Accepted today! Received a call from Dean Ratts at about 10:15am. It has been the greatest, most surreal, and arguably, the most emotional day of my life, as being a medical student at WashU has been a lifelong dream! I wish those of you still holding wait list positions the best of luck. Stay positive and hang in there. I'm sure there will be more calls this week.

So what are the next steps for accepted students? When do we pay our deposit and when will we be formally enrolled?

Do any current students know if most merit based scholarships are usually given out by now?

Nope. No evidence I've been accepted other than hx of a one minute call from a St Louis phone number on my phone. Still not 100% sure I didn't dream it 😉
Hi guys: Any change in the portal for the students pulled in from the WL? Thanks

Dean Ratts said we'll get something by snail mail and we have five days to decide - I'm not sure if that means five days for them to receive the written intent to matriculate + deposit or if something else like an email stating intent works. Guess I'd better plan on Fed-exing the deposit just in case since I'm on the west coast!

Got the call yesterday, asked dean Ratts about whether that intent snail mail had to be postmarked within 5 days. She basically said we have quite a bit of leeway so not to worry

So as far as we know, nobody on SDN was accepted off the WL today... I wonder if their committees are using today to meet and discuss applicants.

So Dean Ratts called me about an hour ago...and I swear to god, I got the phone call just as I was watching the end of the last Game of Thrones episode (no spoilers) but you guys know what i'm talking about. So I was freaking out already and this made me freak out wayyyyy more. I can't believe I got in - I did send in like two updates - so maybe they saw how invested I was in going. But either way, there is hope guys!!! There will be more acceptances, don't worry <3

And GoT will forever be my good luck charm

Congrats! Do you mean you sent two since getting waitlisted?

I sent one in a month after I had interviewed, and another one at the end of April after I realized I had been waitlisted. I didn't say I would definitely matriculate if I was accepted, but I did indicate how much I liked the school in both letters

I'm scared the initial wave of waitlist acceptances is over and that we're not likely to see much movement from now on :/

that's my concern too... i wonder if there's any current student who might know better?

Hopefully there's more this week and next? I would imagine that if people are getting off the waitlist at other schools, they have at least a few days to decide and then withdraw elsewhere, hopefully creating more movement over the next few days.

It's the UCSF JMP program. Preclinical and thesis-based masters in Berkeley, then clinical training is at UCSF with the regular MD program. I almost applied but then I remembered I don't want to write another thesis. Word on the street is it's losing some funding this year and prospective students are going elsewhere due to anxiety over program stability.

Does anyone have thoughts on communicating directly with one of my interviewers regarding my interest in the school? Or is it best to direct things to the committee as a whole/the dean?

I only sent a thank you to my interviewers but haven't had any direct correspondence with them since that time. The updates I have sent have been addressed to the entire committee. I figured direct contact with interviewers may be a good option since they tend to act as advocates for candidates a lot of the time? Not sure how much of a factor that is at WashU. And I didn't know if direct interview contact would be perceived as too aggressive.

For what it's worth, my interviewers didn't provide me with their contact information, even though they said I could ask them about the school. Then when I asked the office they told me to direct email to them, that they couldn't give me their addresses.

Mine gave me her card with contact info, so I think it varies case-by-case. But for letters and updates, I just sent directly to Dr. Ratts.

Maybe email your interviewer and CC Dean Ratts? Or vice versa, whichever you think makes more sense.

That's a good point. Perhaps not being provided with an e-mail address is a sign they prefer things to just go to the admissions office. I had one interviewer provide an e-mail address, and I only found the other's through some Google-fu (e-mail address listed on a paper in which they are corresponding author).

Has anyone ever heard of a full ride scholarship at WashU? I hear they have full tuition scholarships but I'm wondering if they offer full rides as well.

Aside from MSTP's (who get a true full-ride), Wash U gives out quite a few (not sure exactly how many) partial tuition merit scholarships and four full-tuition merit scholarships every year. Everyone who gets a merit scholarship is still eligible to apply for need-based aid as well (for which you reapply every year). They are very generous with need-based aid if your EFC is low enough. It is definitely possible to get one of the full-tuition scholarships and then have the rest of your COA covered by need-based scholarships, so that you end up with a full-ride.

Gotta be more than four full tuition, no? Feel like we saw more than that just in this thread.

Could be. There's a lot of funding for scholarships that can be allotted in various ways, based on the admissions committee's discretion.

I know quite a few get offered partial tuition merit scholarships. Perhaps more than four end up with full tuition. But there is a program offering exactly four full-tuition scholarships each year. And the four recipients get announced here.
