2016-2017 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For people interviewed at WashU, do they ask detailed question about the candidate research experience? thanks

I spent quite some time ~20-30 mins in both faculty interviews talking about my public health research, but both deans were very involved in public health, Dr. Ratts and Dr. Ross.

Then other 30-40 mins was mostly just personal about my interests, journey, etc.

Thanks so much. How much the interview will be weighed to decide whether you will be accepted, weighted or rejected?

you might be able to get a rough idea from the percent accepted after interview, which i believe is 40% (somewhere in the middle across all schools). that's not a perfect indicator tho

for people who have interviewed, when you found out who were the interviewers (their names), couple days before the interview date?

Would a 4:45p flight (the evening of the interview) be cutting it too close?

I did one at that time and it worked out fine. Seemed like the airport isn't to busy and security line was fast.
Thanks! Did you just Uber back to the airport? (Assuming that's quicker than public transportation when you're pressed for time?)

I would say public transportation might actually be faster, since the nearest stop is about 100 yards from the med school building. That's what I did and it was very easy and convenient!

Yes, I was going to try to take the light rail, but another applicant was leaving at same time so we shared an uber. I think it was around $30-35 if I remember correctly.

You can ride the red line metro from the middle of the WashU Med center directly to the airport entrance. It only takes ~20 minutes and will save you a good amount!

Thanks for the responses, everyone! I was planning on taking the train when I arrived, but good to know that I have the option to take it on my return trip to the airport!

So I know that the first 2 years are P/F, but is the class still ranked in clinical years? Do they do AΩA?

So I just got my interview day itinerary and it looks like I have four interviews? is that right? I thought there were two interviews and one was experimental...

There were two at the start of the cycle (one short closed file, one 45-min open file). Then in the middle of the cycle they added a third interview, a new short one with a current student.

Haven't heard of having a fourth for anybody

Have rejections been handed out here yet? I have silence since Aug but assuming/expecting a rejection

I had 4 on my interview day as well - it's kind of a lot, so pace yourself! (There were just 3 of us on my day that had 4)

No, and no waitlists, that all doesn't come until March

Is the 4th related to some kind of additional program you marked interest in? Or do they just randomly have extra interviews for some people

It's random based on what they said during the interview.

Was it another faculty or student? Closed or open?

I had 3 and that was an exhausting day because the 20-30 min one was actually an hour and the other two were an hour and 15 mins. 4?!?! That's crazy.

I interviewed in late August and have not heard anything back yet, is this normal or could I have missed something from WashU? Would they contact if they haven't heard back for you?

My understanding is many people hear nothing until March, when a bunch of decisions of all types (A, WL, R) go out

Thanks for the quick response! I'll keep my fingers crossed

Will go there for interview next week. a bit nervous. What is the format of interview? How to prepare for it? Appreciate any advice and tip.

It's extremely, extremely relaxed. Closed file interview was started with "tell me about yourself?" and they just asked followups about the things I mentioned. Open file interview was very casual and conversational, they just asked things like "so tell me more about [activity]?"

I didn't have a student interview so I can't comment on that one, but seeing as they've just started doing this third interview in the middle of the cycle, my guess is that they're trying it out for some data gathering. I'd be worry free about this one because I doubt their comments will impact your odds of admission. Could be wrong but I still wouldn't worry anyways because all the students I met were friendly and easy to talk to, and the vibe of the interview day overall is very much meant to be relaxed and inviting. Nobody at any point is going to grill you on tough ethics questions or anything like that.

People accepted by call: was it from a private/unknown number? I missed one from an unknown number and i need some good news in my life lol

Mine came from an office/lab phone in the building that admissions is in (I recognize the first 3 digits). But if your person was to call from outside normal work hours it might be via their cell so who knows

Thanks so much efle for the information. What you mean by "open file" or "close file", do you mean that "open file" is that they have your AMCAS application in front of them, and "close file" means that they don't have your application material?

Yeah, for the closed file they have never seen your application materials. For my open file the person had it open on their computer and would scroll through and ask me about something, while for other people I know their person had just read through their AMCAS beforehand but didn't have it open during the interview.

Basically I'd re-read your activity entries to remember what you had talked about and expect broad prompting related to that.

Does anyone know how to submit a post-interview application update here?

To people who were accepted - did you ever get a second "acceptance information packet" in the mail after you sent in your signed acceptance letter? In the email they sent me to confirm they received my letter, they mentioned I would be getting acceptance info in the mail soon. Is there a second packet or were they referring to the first one? Thanks!

I only ever got one packet of info, which had pretty much everything in it (even stuff about drug testing, summer research).

I think we get contacted by the financial aid people to give them a bunch of stuff in the next couple months though.

I got that packet too. I think their email congratulating me again was a mistake because it came ~2 months late so the packet they were referring to was the one I already got...just wanted to double check. Thank you!

Mine was from a random St. Louis number that when I looked it up was the guy on the admissions committee that did the wrap up meeting.

Oh I personally didn't have one but they said it was a pilot program they were trying. I'm pretty sure it was another open file interview.
