2019-2020 Indiana

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did my interview the other day, overall thought it went really well but still feel nervous because I think I botched a question or two. Overall the conversation was good and the interviewers were really friendly and seemed genuinely interested in me and my extracurriculars so I'm hoping for the best!

Pre-II R today. Complete mid august, LM 72, oos. Big ripperoni

Pre II R. LM 74. OOS But strong ties to state (husband from Indy, worked as a nurse at the cancer center, rec letter from a doc there). Complete mid sept.

Silver lining- at least I don’t have to worry about getting stuck in Terre Haute.

Good luck to everyone still in the running! Sending good vibes your way.

Yeah looks like they’re back from break and sending them Rs out lol.

How quick are they to get back on decisions? I interviewed earlier this month so I'm guessing I'll be hearing next month right?

It really depends!! The earliest you would hear back if you are accepted is probably next month but many people don't hear for several months and they don't send a waitlist or a majority of rejections out until May.

Thanks for the quick response!

Anyone with USPS Informed Delivery gotten any suspicious letters coming in? Based off previous reports, it may also be labeled as "you have a letter coming in, but it was too large to scan."

I use the USPS informed delivery and received this message when my acceptance came.

I got that message sometime in late November, but alas, it turned out to be a particularly large piece of junk mail.

You can opt out of a lot of junk mail, email and phone calls through the FTC. It doesn't stop everything but I've noticed a remarkable decrease in spam since filling it out.

Hey guys, wanted to ask a few questions regarding the interview day.

1. What was the closest hotel?
2. Did anybody feel it was necessary to scope out the campus before hand so they knew where they were going?
3. Is public transportation available? If not, were the rates for Uber/Lyft noticeably high?

I need help, please! I was given an interview for Feb but it's on the same day as another interview I have scheduled. I cannot change the other interview because I already bought the flight tickets and where I'll be staying. The lady I emailed pretty much told me: that's the only date we are offering you, take it or leave it. I'm so upset about this. I have no preference for schools, I just already committed myself to the other school's date and I don't have the income to cancel a flight and lodging to accommodate them. I feel really overwhelmed. Is anyone able to offer advice? Should I try to communicate with someone in the admissions directly? I don't want to step on anyone's toes; this just feels so unfair. I"m really depressed about it.

@G9090, that really sucks. Indiana is notoriously inflexible when it comes to rescheduling interviews. Do you already have an acceptance in hand? If not, contact the other school and ask if they're able to reschedule. If so, do anything in your power to make it to Indiana.

I know cancelling those flights/hotel bookings is not an insignificant amount of money, but consider the possibility that Indiana has the potential to be your only acceptance this cycle. A couple hundred bucks is literally pennies compared to taking another gap year and losing out on a year's worth of attending salary. Put it on a credit card, ask parents, take out from your savings, literally do anything you need to.

If you already have a DO acceptance (but no MD acceptances yet), I still stand by what I said. If you've already gotten into an MD, then I suppose that's a different story.

Also, look into the policies of the airline you booked your flight at and contact them explaining your situation. Some customer service representatives may be more lenient/empathetic than others.

Why do you still stand by what you said?

If you applied DO and got a DO acceptance but chose to act like it was meaningless then why even apply DO in the first place??

Not at all meaningless, but it would be incredibly foolish to not attend an MD invite if you have one in hand. Just spend like 5 minutes in the DO Students forum if you need clarification.

I disagree, but that ok. You obviously feel strongly enough about it to express your condescending opinion and I’m not going to change your mind. I believe success in medicine is largely a product of how you perform as an individual (ie: I’ve seen DO students turn down MD acceptances and still land better residencies than MD students)

just my 0.02

To the OP, I rescheduled with IU after they told me that asking to reschedule would be a cancellation of my interview and the committee would have to meet again to approve it. They eventually approved it and I was accepted this cycle. All that to say, you can roll the dice with IU, but they’re pretty anal about scheduling.

@G9090

How do can I find the time for the interview? I am just given two check in times one for the morning at 8:15 am and one for the afternoon at 10:45 am.

On the portal. Left hand side should have an interview menu option. Before the check-in time is your interview time.

If you need more help, post a screenshot and I'll point it out for you.

I won't argue with the first sentence, as I agree. But there is an inherent bias against DO students from residency programs. That is not condescension, it's statistics, and I believe every applicant should be well informed of this during the application process.

I'll just leave it at that.

Thank you all for the help, everyone. Far nicer than the discord for this. I'm going to try and call and ask for help related to my predicament and try and speak with someone in charge of the process. The lady I emailed would not give me an earlier date or even an alternative campus. So hopefully someone in charge will be more willing to collaborate with me to make it work. If not, I'll see what the other school tells me. But it's already so close to the interview date that I don't know if they will be able to change it. That's why I'm so bummed about it. I got them all the forms and documents on the same day. I ran around like crazy being meticulous just to be told: take it or leave it? That's what hurts.

Thank you all for your encouragement. All the best to you all moving forward!

Is the discord IU specific? If it is mind sending me it?
