2019-2020 Jefferson (Kimmel)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is there lots of movement for the HPWL? Also for those of you who interviewed, what are some good tips to not be nervous? Also, what are the chances post interview for acceptance?

My faculty interviewer said that about 50% of the class comes from the waitlist (not sure about HP tho), and during the info session, we were told that they interview ~800-1000 applicants and accept ~400. Tips for not being nervous are: confidence is key and it's probably the most laid back interview day to exist!
Thank you for that 🙂 I am super super nervous since it's a top choice. have you heard back from them yet?

Nope! I just interviewed yesterday. Also a top choice:xf: You'll do great! Everyone is obviously nervous on some level, and I think it would be weird if someone was 100% comfortable. A little anxiety is good; just channel positive energy through it! As most schools say, if you got an interview, your grades and scores are good enough and they just want to see if you're a good fit 🙂
Thank you🙂 good luck to you too! did they let you know when to hear back for a decision?

Could you speak to the school's involvement in the community? Opportunities for medical students for leadership or community involvement?
There are countless opportunities to get involved in the community in a multitude of different ways. There are several student run clinics (I think there is 5 or 6), and you can get involved as early as first year. Additionally, there are many nearby shelters and/or soup kitchens to volunteer with. There are also several tutoring/mentoring activities you can participate in that are for local students that are school run. There is really the opportunity to do anything you want in the community through Jeff, and I think that is one of the major strengths of our program.

For people who got accepted, if we click accept the offer in the portal does that mean we committed officially to the school?

It's not! As far as I know it's just to hold your acceptance. Then you'll get a follow-up email with steps on how to pay the enrollment deposit (which I'm not sure if it's binding or not?) which has to be done by 4/30 to get a seat in the class. Hope this helps 🙂

The deposit is refundable until 4/30 to hold your seat. After that it’s non refundable.

Can you tell me everything/anything you know about the High Priority Wait List? Pretty bummed to be on that and not accepted. Jeff is my top choice! Thanks.

Just keep on sending interest letters and updates. They love that. I was HPWL last cycle and got off it because of my continuous interest.

Did you send a letter of intent or kind of reiterate it in your letters?

I think that if you want your seat to be secures for you, you need to pay the deposit... you have a few weeks I think to do it. But it’s refundable until April. Most schools have the same thing

After we accept the offer on the portal and pay the $100 deposit is there anything else we are supposed to do to reserve our seat?

What is the research involvement with faculty like?

It's super easy to get started. I just emailed some faculty with my resume, told them my background and what I'm interested in, and we set up a project together

Once you get the "error" message on Banner, it means you've done everything you need to. You'll also have to fill in any "missing info," which for me was my SSN

Thanks so much! How often do you recommend? Weekly? Monthly? I sent one to Dean Callahan the day after getting the HPWL email.

I would say to send interest letters whenever you have significant updates to go with it... weekly or monthly might be too much if you don’t have any extra information to provide them. Maybe send your next one early January now? Idk it really depends

Ok perfect that's exactly what I had to do. I had to fill in my SSN and then it gave me the error message once I logged back in.

I'm a bit confused...Admissions decision email that I received 10/15 said a lot of nice things ("very favorably impressed...") and that I was now in a special High Priority category. The admission decision in the portal had the same email, verbatim, minus my name at the top ("dear applicant"). I just checked the portal again, and the message is similar but now says I'm in the alternate category and lacks the niceties. What happened? Did sending a letter of intent screw me over? Freaking out a bit...

Same with me. I wouldn’t be worried. I noticed right when I accepted the waitlist position on the portal that it said alternate list rather than high priority.

You have no idea how helpful this was to hear, considering it's a Saturday night, and would be poor form to call the school or my advisor...thank you!!!
No problem! This process makes everyone a little neurotic and forces you to rethink anything and everything! Best of luck!

Does anyone have advice in sending an update letter before my interview? And then sending a letter of intent after? From the thread thus far, it seems that this school is receptive to receiving updates, as long as you have tangible things to share since the secondary. Does anyone know if there is a preferred point of contact to send update letters to?

Hey all, I was wondering if i could get some guidance. I am a Canadian applicant and my application was completed in mid August, however my application has yet to be reviewed. Seeing how acceptances have already come out, should I prepare myself for some bad news? My apologies, but the difference between the Canadian and US systems have me a little confused. In Ontario, the province I live in, everyone interviews before final acceptances and rejections are handed out to everyone on the same day.

Everything happens on a rolling basis here, with interviews being extended out as far as March in some cases. So no, no bad news yet!

is Jefferson known to send out late interviews to people who were complete very early on?

School ties?
Nope. Just very non-traditional and been out of school a long time, although not URM. My explanation for my success was that they truly read each application in detail and look for passion to care and help patients. They seem to look for altruistic, compassionate people more than any other school from my interview trail. Be nice during your interview to everyone, I mean everyone, and you’ll do great

Anyone who sent an update, did you send to the admissions email or to Dean Callahan's email directly?

Can anyone confirm that the earliest to be removed from HPWL is end of April/early May?

For what it's worth, I sent a pre-II update with a new award I had received directly to Dean Callahan and her reply was very kind and prompt. I got an II the next day, which may have been a coincidence I'm not sure

That's amazing congrats!! And thank you for the advice!

Current first year here. I can answer any questions people have!
Do you have any tips for interview day? I've heard it's very laid back, but do you know if there is anything regarding the school's mission not found on the website that they look for in interviewees?

I’m also a first year.
Honestly just be yourself. Your student interviewers are looking for people who they would like to be classmates with. If you are being interviewed is because there’s something about you that already caught the school’s attention, so just let your character shine!! Also, be nice to EVERYONE, I can’t emphasize that enough.
Just have a good time and try to show your interviewers why you are a good fit and why you think you’d do well at Jeff/why you are interested. The school really appreciates if you are an active member, so talking about volunteering with the community or any leadership roles might be good as well 🙂
Good luck! Feel free to pm me

Have there been any pre-interview rejections here? I have been complete here since the end of August and have not heard anything since.
Thought I saw one earlier in the thread could have been wrong.

a few pages back, someone said their portal was updated with something along the lines of "interview not offered". i don't think they received an email about it either; just a change to their portal status.

I got called about an hour ago by Dr. Callahan herself, informing me of my acceptance! I am so so honored and am still wondering if it was just a dream. I was interviewed last Wednesday (10/16) and loved the school more than any of the others and more than I could've imagined. Thrilled to become a part of the family. Goodluck to all of you! :xf: 🙂

CONGRATULATIONS!!! 🙂
