2019-2020 Jefferson (Kimmel)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe somewhere it said 1-6 weeks after interview you’ll be notified of your admissions decision. At the interview, Jefferson said they mostly accept or waitlist students, few will be outright rejected post interview. However, schools cannot send acceptances until after Oct 15, so the people who interviewed back in early September understandably have to wait longer.

Well, my friends... I think I just realized why the rejection. As an OLD non-traditional applicant (lots of life and relevant experience between now and the time I finished college), my prerequisite coursework is too old by FIVE YEARS. Yup. I dug around their website and had missed this fun little fact when I applied: "All academic requirements should be completed prior to matriculation. All prerequisite courses should be completed within five years of application." Arghhh!! 🙁 I getttt it... but isn't that what the MCAT is for/ to demonstrate competency? I mean, I taught myself the science after being out of school for 10 years, so I could do well on my exam. Anyways... I still LOVE the school, and really really hope you all get accepted here!! But if you do... maybe someone could just nudge the admissions committee to make their "notification" method for rejected students a little more compassionate, and a little more... direct. 🙂
“Should”

That makes me nervous now. My gen chems are 6 years old. Everything else falls within 5.

I am so sorry to hear this. I think I am in a similar boat though. Did you take any of the courses they "recommend" on the MSAR post-graduation or were all your prereqs completed in college?

I took all of their “recommended” (required?) prerequisites in college 🙁 Some of my graduate MBA courses also had some overlap, such as statistics and data analysis/ mathematics courses... but even THOSE are beyond the “5 year” mark! (So old, LOL). Anyways, I’ll follow up to let you know what they say 🙂
Was this pre or post II? Also, sorry to ask but when were you complete?

Pre II. And I swear there are zero "red flags" on my app... as in, I've literally never even gotten a speeding ticket or traffic violation. I WAS complete pretty late though, about 2 weeks ago. Maybe they just have way too many applicants. I'll find out!

Is the "within 5 years" rule typical of other schools? Seems like a pretty odd rule since it's biased against older applicants. I can understand why MCAT scores "expire" but it's a lot more difficult to retake all those pre-reqs! Anyways, best of luck with the rest of the cycle!

Thank you so much for your support, and I completely agree! Also, I feel as though having to self-study for the monstrous MCAT after being out of school for a decade (and doing well on the test!) should "trump" the need for "current" pre-reqs. Luckily, this is NOT a typical rule for all schools... I actually was very careful in selecting schools that either didn't have a pre-req requirement, or didn;t have a "statute of limitations" on their coursework. Sadly, I just got so excited about Sidney Kimmel that I over-looked the one line on their website that states the "5 year rule"... and per MSAR, the courses are all listed as "recommended," so I didn't think anything of it. I could be WRONG though about WHY they gave me the pink slip! It honestly might be something completely different... like the fact my app was so late, and they receive more apps than any other school in the country.... Stay tuned my friends. 🙂

Anyone know when they interview until? I'm scheduled for December and I feel that's a little late.

So, there were a few schools I skipped applying to for the same reason--that they want you to have completed prerequisite coursework within five years of matriculating. But I'm confused. I don't think I understand this policy correctly.
Let's say I complete Gen Chem I in my first semester of my freshman year, and I graduate on time (4 years). Technically, wouldn't that mean that I'd have to retake Gen Chem if I took more than one gap year? Because obviously, the classes that are now 5 years back are just going to keep adding up with every passing semester. If you take four years off to work, you'd basically have to retake every prereq, no?

This is a great point. A lot of applicants would be ineligible if they took two years off before applying, and took general chemistry/other reqs their freshman year. Perhaps they mean since graduating? Or since the last requisite course one took?

Last year I interviewed on the last interview day, which was the Wednesday of the first week of April.

I graduated college in 2011. Most of my relevant classes are from back then, with me dabbling in some post-bacc classes in the past 3 years. I retook org chem post-bacc and got the same grade, which was not a good grade lol

They still gave me an interview last year. I think you should be fine!

I took it to mean that since you graduated undergrad. I think it wouldn't make sense to penalize people who took a year or two off. If they took 5 years off and they think you don't remember your college classes, that's more fair.

YES this has to be what they mean. I followed up with an email today because person in office sounded overwhelmed earlier this week and just said "whatever it says on the website is what the requirement is..." 🙁 But I agree that it is unclear, a bit exclusive of older applicants, and am still confused how they can penalize/immediately reject someone for having classes that are too old, when other parts of their website (and MSAR) just list classes as "recommended". OH welll.

Did you send updates to this school?

Does anyone know if this school is receptive to updates? I just got a new job and volunteer opportunity, is that enough to update them? Thanks!!

Are you pre or post interview invite?

My interview is in December. I wonder if I should send in an update later this month or just wait until my interview to discuss it? Perhaps it wouldn't hurt to do both.

Are you a current student or a reapplicant?

I'm also non-trad, we're in this thing together 🙂! While I was retaking courses I did badly in after my first degree, I fell in love with engineering and biomedical research and have been working in that space ever since. I ended up completing a 2nd degree in chem engineering last year, worked in the pharma industry and am now on a fellowship. That being said - I retook most of my classes from my first degree except for three bio/orgo pre-reqs that are most definitely from 2011. I received my II today, so hopefully courses that are a bit old don't hurt us too much this cycle!

What is the age range for non-traditional students? Just getting a sense of the average age of applicants/matriculating student body!

I just turned 27, but I know some people who've applied to med school in their 30s or later.

One of my letter writers went at 52, loves his life and loves his work. Really awesome guy.

Cool! I'm 27 too! One of the drawbacks that my friend (a current M1) says about her school is that the majority of the students are 23. A balanced and diverse student population is somewhat of a factor for me.

Whaaat - so happy to hear that! I somehow spent four extra years in undergrad, so I'm used to it.

I completely agree, but I also have a feeling that no matter the average age we'll all be working so hard that we'll be like family.

I'm 24, but I feel like I'm on the younger side. I have a master's degree and been working in mental health field for 1 year 3-4months now.

Reapplicant. Was on HPWL last year and was waiting for a spot to open up...unfortunately got the "we are full thanks for applying" email two days after their orientation day in late July. It's been a wild ride lol
