2019-2020 UC Riverside

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Those are amazing stats, congrats! But I gotta say that UCR is one of the UC's that's not so friendly to OOS given their small class size of about 70. They are also very mission-based. They want to accept students who will primarily stay in the Inland Empire (IE) where there is a great shortage of primary care physicians. As such, they prioritize students who are from the IE or have significant ties. They also look at whether you have demonstrated extensive service to underserved populations.

Hope this gives you better insight, but its only one school out of 179 lol. Good luck this cycle, I'm sure you will get in somewhere!!
what is you look OOS on AMCAS but you have significant ties here (parents moved there after I started college) I planned to mention this in my secondary but they have not sent me one? Do you think I could email them directly about this and ask for a secondary?

I would call them and ask instead of email. But generally my understanding is UCR doesn't accept OOS applicants period.

I agree ^^ I actually did that with UNLV. I have primary family in Las Vegas, but it's not stated anywhere in my primary app for them to know. I emailed the admissions office and got a secondary the next day. This isn't to get hopes up or anything, but you wont know until you try and I think you have a good enough reason to ask, regardless of what MSAR or anyone on SDN says. Goodluck!

Thank you! I will do that!

Are they still giving out secondary at this point? I have not heard anything from anyone since their last wave of secondaries.

Did anyone come up short for the math pre-req? My calc class was only 3 credits, so I am 1 credit short. Would you suggest adding a trig or algebra class?

Secondary received just now. Primary was submitted on 7/22 for those of you still waiting for a secondary.

Finally received my secondary, In state SoCal, 3.6 cGPA 515 MCAT. No IE connections at all, I'm from LA. Is it even worth the 120 bucks? I feel like I'm not gonna get much love from Riverside.

Student from Northern Cal who just got their secondary...wondering if it's even worth applying so late and not being from/closely tied to the IE? Any opinions?

Waiting patiently for an interview invite; secondary review email received end of August through their portal.

As long as you're in California you have a chance. It more about fit if you are not from IE. Im not and got a secondary, but in terms of applying late, I dont think its worth it if youre trying to submit now.

Whooo!! II today at 12:30pm! Completed & Under Review on 8/04. Re-applicant, IS w/ ties to Inland Empire & LM 66 but strong upward trend. Don't lose hope everyone!

Congrats! I think my hope is gone. I was complete 8/3. Haha. Thanks for the info!

If I may ask, what's the difference between your app now vs last year for UCR?

got the secondary about a month ago; didnt think to fill it out since I applied to 36 schools and was super burned out. Too late to fill it out?

I would fill it out! They started sending out secondaries on the later end, and the prompts are pretty short. I'm personally a slow writer, but even I got it done pretty fast.

it says in the secondary to fill them out within 2 weeks. should i call admissions or just try to submit?

Oh you're right hmm.. I know for UCSD they were alright with people submitting it past the 1 month deadline.
I would personally call them to ask about it. I've called them before to ask about the course pre-reqs and they were pretty nice.

Sorry! I missread "too late" in your first post in more general sense.

I was in a post-bac program for 1 year that allowed me to maintain a longer upward trend in my grades. UCR is definitely holistic and takes into consideration trend in addition to overall GPA! I was also able to gain new ECs such as tutoring in underserved communities and strengthen by clinical experiences via scribing & volunteering. Lastly, I definitely wrote a MUCH better personal statement and gained better LORs. I was able to get a committee letter, which helped a lot in sharing my upbringing, struggles, and qualities.

Well just got the secondary this past weekend and planning to submit tomorrow or day after. My primary was verified like 2 months ago so dunno if it's worth it to apply this late if they only got around to me now 🙁

I would still apply. If they sent you secondary just now, I feel it means they have actually looked at your application and decided to be interested in you. I don't actually know anything about their application process. Just my opinion.
