2019-2020 Washington University in St. Louis

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you know which is which?
They are both one on one.
One interviewer has your file open, and the other interviewer knows nothing except for your name.
Perhaps I understand your question: Yes, you will know which interviewer has your file open and which knows just your name.

Did washu fall down anyone else’s list after the interview?

It actually shot way up on my list. In talking to one of the deans about the curricular changes, he convinced me that 1) it would not be a big deal because they have really, really, really spent time doing research, talking to other schools, getting feedback from students (they also have an entire blog dedicated to the switch, super easy to access and just SO transparent) and 2) I am interested in medical education so he said that it would be a really great opportunity to actually get some experience tweaking a curriculum as a medical student. So, yeah, I left the day feeling good about it! But was actually really impressed by how normal (!!!) the current students are and how affordable and livable St. Louis is.

St. Louis as a city was really disappointing for me, but the school blew me away. Only thing I’m concerned about is the new curriculum. Some of the current students expressed their apprehension

I liked the interviewers just fine. I wasn't crazy about the city. Feels really small. Any major changes to curricula make me nervous as well because there are potential hiccups.

Loved my interviews, but the campus left so much to be desired imo. Their undergrad campus is STUNNING but the med campus is just kinda meh at best.

The interviewers you get (at any school) are pretty much just the luck of the draw. And even if your interview feels awkward, it’s impossible to know what the interviewer is actually thinking. Do your best and hope for the best! That’s all you can do.
What was off-putting about your experience?

I went in neutral and came out of the interview day with pretty positive impressions! To me I could see the detail/effort they put into their interview day and I really liked the students I talked to (MS1s emphasized free time and collaborative culture, MS4s liked helping younger students and were funny and chill in general). Also I kinda liked the look of the architecture and how everything is connected via the glass tunnel bridges. My interviews were conversational and flew by very quickly. Biggest draws were the student support and culture, resources (lots of connections and money), impressive match list, and the huge boost in merit scholarship funding they started this year it seems

I absolutely loved the school on interview day, although this was the most intense interview I’ve had and definitely not conversational. For me, it wasn’t off-putting so much as it was overwhelming. While I knew where I stood after my interview at other schools, I left here feeling pretty doubtful.

But I got good news!! So it really is difficult to judge your performance 100% accurately.

I’m guessing your love for the school must’ve come thru then despite the nerves. On my interview day I felt them intensely gauging my true interest in the school, which was as u said “overwhelming.” Afterwards I felt bad, like I should’ve expressed my love for the school more passionately.

Both my interviews were good. The interview day bumped them up in my list quite a bit. Only weird thing was the closed file interview really didn’t seem satisfied with my “why WashU?” answer even though I gave like 4-5 quality reasons

Lol yea like very skeptical haha I bet we had the same interviewer

Hahaha yeah probably. I talked for like 3-4 minutes about St Louis, the school itself, the patient population, etc and he was like “is there anything else about the school itself?” So I rattled off about research but he still seemed unconvinced

If we are sending an ITA, should we upload it to the portal? Or is there an email we can send it to? Thanks!
