2020-2021 UC Riverside

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
According to MSAR, everyone will get the secondary, so lets all try to remain calm lol
I emailed them regarding a secondary, and I received this response: "The admissions team has been working diligently to send out invitations for qualifying applicants to complete a secondary." Though I also see that MSAR states that all applicants will receive a secondary, the email's use of the word "qualifying" implies otherwise.

I got their secondary today, much faster than anticipated considering I wasn't verified until the end of August.

Got a secondary today. IS, stats aren't exceptional and now this thread has me wondering whether I should bother if they send one to everybody, haha. Anybody have any clues as to how to know whether you have an actual shot? Thanks!

@Tetines of Paris I would say demonstrated service to underserved communities, ties to the Inland Empire, talking about all this stuff in secondaries, will be just as if not more important than stats for UCR

I have 2 questions in regards to the secondary:
1) what exactly is the "request substitution" box for the prerequisite section?
ex: I retook chemistry course part II cause i got a C-, so should I check the box "request substitution" for the course that I want to substitute with?

2) The school strongly recommends 40 science core credits in the prerequisite introduction. I also see a gray box indicating "24.200003" highly recommended humanities core total credits. Does anyone see the same thing that I'm seeing?

Thanks 🙂

If it helps anyone, just got my secondary yesterday. amcas verified on 9/3, IS. but I'm also a reapplicant to UCR so could be why

also, is anyone having trouble adding the prereqs? every time I try to add something it just disappears

I see the 40 science credit but I don't see the 24 highly recommended humanities credit on my app, maybe they changed it? mine just has the 8 semester hours of English and humanities and 3 of Spanish

I see the highly recommended humanities credit box on mine, but it's is a whole number. What is your question, is it that it's in a decimal format?

My question is there's no explicit recommendation of 24 credits of humanities. The only thing I see is the grey box so should I try to enter as many as humanities courses I took or just enough to fulfill the 8 semester credits.

Also, what exactly is the "request substitution"?

OH, yes they have a "recommended" number of humanities courses but I personally added a bunch of courses. I'm not sure which one is better to do but I wanted to show them I'm a ~well rounded academic~ or whatever.

I think the request substitution is if you haven't taken the required class and you want to use a different class to fill the prereq- but I'm not sure, I didn't have to use it.

they were looking for humanities courses that "emphasize culture, ethics, public health, spiritual practices, and other aspects of diversity" so I only entered courses that fit that criteria

I just submitted my secondary 🙂

This is interesting. I know they send it to everyone, but a lot of my friends had their applications verified way earlier than mine and still haven't got a secondary from UC riverside. My app was verified on August 20th, and I received a secondary from them yesterday.

Hi all, thinking about adding UCR to my app, do you think it would be a good/bad idea? I'm in-state, no ties to IE or OC (mostly to VC and LA). Other stats are in my sig

Yeah I find this interesting too, are they screening for IE ties first?

If you don't apply, you get 0% chances of getting in the school. Do it but make sure your experiences reflect a passion for serving the underserved.

Don't think so. Verified 7/24, and I live like...down the street practically. LMAO. Sighs....

Srsly kind of sad I haven't received it yet since it would mean I could live at home and continue building connections with the community I want to work with in the foreseeable future since my family is also in the IE.

I am in the same situation. I live 5 min away from UCR and have extensive work with the community in Moreno Valley and Riverside. Verified early July, and still no secondary. I am confident they will send it out soon ( ill call them in a week and double-check ). Maybe they're saving the IE residents for the last stretch or something I don't know lol

don't be sad. it's SUPER early in the cycle. Try not to monitor the comments of other people on SDN. I"m sure everyone will get one.

Which courses did you guys put down for social sciences/humanities?
(I am assuming they are asking for courses such as sociology, religious studies, gender women studies...)
Do we also include Psychology and Anthropology here?

I just received an email from their admissions office regarding their technical difficulties and delays due to COVID. looks like they're still reviewing primary apps, so secondaries should still be coming!

I opened that email so past that Google didn't even finish uploading the email to completion lol

I included psychology and would've included anthropology if I had taken it.

the email says they will be screening to my understanding and they just started this process.

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the UCR School of Medicine. We recently upgraded to a new application software management system and have experienced some delays in processing applications due to COVID and technical difficulties.

Our application cycle is now open. After initial review of applications, secondary application invitations will be released on a continual basis to verified AMCAS applicants within the next two weeks.

We appreciate your patience as we continue to navigate through these unprecedented times.

since people have already received secondaries I wonder if this is some soft screen or lower priority

Received a secondary 9/21. Verified 8/10. UCR Alumni, IS but not from IE.

Secondary was sitting in my spam folder. They sent me a follow up email two days later (today) saying that I was sent a secondary and to check my spam folder.

I got a secondary on Monday, IS, IE resident with a low GPA/high MCAT. I also received the email above that everyone is talking about, except mine was to remind me that I need to submit my secondary within a week of receiving it but that they are kindly asking me to submit it as soon as possible to expedite the app process

+1

I also received a secondary on Monday. Verified 8/31. I don't have ties to the area other than a parent living there (ie I didn't go to UCR or anything).

I didn't receive any other email from them other than my application was complete because I submitted my secondary, but that's probably because of the quick turnaround time on my end.

I am confused lol they are sending mixed signals. Does anyone know how heavily they screen before sending secondaries? MSAR says all verified applicants, but their last email was confusing

" After initial review of applications, secondary application invitations will be released on a continual basis to verified AMCAS applicants within the next two weeks. "

So do all verified applicants get one or not? The "after initial review" is throwing me off

Historically speaking, they are slightly selective about who they interview and accept for their class (IE residents, URM, mission fit, e.g.) so I assume not everyone will get one. Whether that's 25%, 50%, or 75% of applicants receiving secondaries I have no idea.

same! lol is it all verified applicants or after an initial review lol

The more i think about it, the more it doesn't make sense. For a school like UC riverside who is so selective about their applicants, I don't see why they want to make their jobs harder by sending secondaries to everyone...(and of course I know they need our money)

Probably for the same reason they only reduced the secondary fee for FAP recipients this cycle... $$$$

I would hope they screen. But with the whole thing about charging people after the fee waiver.......

I still think they’re going to screen! Verified apps sounds like applicants that they approve of. Like why would it take 2 weeks if they’re just going to send it everyone? Wouldn’t that be automatic?
