"Thank you for your interest in the UCR School of Medicine. We recently upgraded to a new application software management system and have experienced some delays in processing applications due to COVID and technical difficulties.

Our application cycle is now open. After initial review of applications, secondary application invitations will be released on a continual basis to verified AMCAS applicants within the next two weeks.

We appreciate your patience as we continue to navigate through these unprecedented times."

Anyone else receive this email?
I got that email last night. So, I think they are now starting their screen

I'm assuming all those that received a secondary are from Southern California? If you aren't from SoCal, please chime in!

Also from Northern California, and received a secondary on September 1st.

I spoke with someone that works in the UCR SOM, and it was heavily implied that they're screening this year. PM me if you want to know more about what he/she told me.

Do you know what they screen for? It is based on GPA/MCAT or more than that.

Maybe some of the people who got secondaries already are a part of the EDP or even a trial run for their new software?

IE applicant and still no secondary yet.

Hi, we'd love to hear more about what you found out if you don't mind sharing?
Thanks!

It seems like they sent out secondaries to non IE residents first?

Ok, Im kind of freaking out! So I just realized that UCR is asking for 8 hours of physics, but it says on their website that lab course hours don't count toward semester hours?? I feel like thats super weird, because most schools only require 2 semesters or 6 credits of physics lecture? was I supposed to take 3 semesters of physics? anyone have any insight on this?

I think is 8 hours total so a whole year of physics. A 4 unit quarter class will give you 2.70 hours converted to semester units. If you multiply that by 3 then you get about 8.1.

No sorry I should've specified, my school did semesters, so each semester for me was 3 units of lecture and 1 unit lab

I was worried about this too, but I just submitted it with the two 3 unit courses

Oh I added the labs too.

I went through last years thread and they had said that it should count for the whole year.

The 1 week deadline is more of a recommendation, from what I believe. They understand that applicants may need more time, so I'm pretty sure they'd accept it even a day after a week.

The 8 unit physics requirement should equal about a year of at least trig-based physics. Were your physics lecture classes less than 4 units, with the lab course being separate?

I was JUST going to ask about the deadline. Completely misread the date on the original secondary invite and started getting worried since my one-week is today. I could still finish it by tonight but barely slept this morning, lol

I would submit a day or 2 later with quality responses, rather than rushing your essays just to make the 1 week deadline 🙂

Hope you got rest!

Have the secondary prompts been posted yet?
1. The mission of the UCR School of Medicine is to improve the health of the people of California and, especially, to serve Inland Southern California by training a diverse workforce of physicians and by developing innovative research and health care delivery programs that will improve the health of the medically underserved in the region and become models to be emulated throughout the state and nation. What experiences, skills, and abilities will you bring to the class to fulfill this mission?
2. The values of the UCR SOM are integrity, innovation, inclusion, excellence, accountability and respect. Please choose one of these values and tell us about a time that you demonstrated it.
3. In what medical specialty or specialties are you interested? What experiences have created the foundation for this interest?
4. Tell us about a personal challenge you have faced in your life thus far and how you demonstrated resilience and grit to overcome it. [Please do not write about studying for or taking the MCAT.]
5. (Optional) If there is anything you would like the committee to consider about your candidacy that is not explained elsewhere in your application, please use this space to tell us.
**250 words max for each

My lectures were each 3 units and my labs were each 1 unit. So with the labs, one year of physics was 8 units for me I was just confused because their websites says that lab courses don’t count toward the total semester hours

The secondary portal says "The University of California, Riverside School of Medicine invites all candidates to submit a secondary application to our MD program."

So they are not screening, as long as you are a CA resident because it also says "Please note we only consider applications from California residents."

they sent out that email saying that they are changing their electronic storage system or something. so that is why everything is delayed

Gonna keep it 100: Nice seeing CA applicants catch something of a break, haha. Maybe I will still take the shot and submit this secondary

I don’t believe UCR accepts OOS students anyways! So this isn’t anything crazy! But nice to have confirmation lol!

right? i feel like we get no real benefits in our in-state schools. some other schools have acceptance rates of like 30-40 percent for their in-state applicants. so its nice to actually feel valued by ucr lol

SoCal resident near Riverside here... to you knowledge, did they send to everyone yet or are they sending them out in batches?

That's what I'm confused about - secondaries must be rolling then? Why have some been invited, and some haven't?

I have no idea. But I posted the text to show they say that they are only preferring CA residents. So idk about IE/non-IE preference that was mentioned earlier in this thread.

I'm filling out the pre-requisite section and it keeps saying "Responses on this page did not meet the page requirements." Um...I have no idea what they could possibly mean. I said I have no courses in Spanish (fluent speaker), everything is more than the required units except for chem (I'm taking biochem now), and checked off the last bit about making sure I complete everything before matriculating.

It saved but says it's not complete. HUH?!

EDIT: Oh, I think I had to request a waiver for me still being in biochem I guess. I still included my ochem labs though. I won't get dinged for it right? I mean, 16 semester hrs is about 2 years (since 8 is supposed to be one year) and i've pretty much done that once I finish biochem. of course I would do another before matriculating if they asked me to...

Secondary received! SoCal. ORM. Verified before transmission on 7/10

I got another secondary invitation today, with the same login information, which still doesn't work. Luckily, the site let me reset my password, and now it's working (it wouldn't let me reset it when I tried yesterday).

Confusingly... the email I got yesterday said:
"We ask that you complete your secondary application within two weeks."
The one I received today says:
"We ask that you complete your secondary application within one week."
(emphasis mine, in both cases).

Without further ado, the prompts (250-word limit for each of them):

1. @TheDataKing - tagging you as per the instructions in the first post of the thread

Very strange, my secondary invitation sounds totally different than yours. I also did not get a hard deadline to submit, but rather their overall December deadline with a recomendation to submit it as soon as possible.

Anywho I recieved mine this morning, LM 66, IS, ORM, no ties to riverside.
