2020-2021 UT Houston ( McGovern)

Hello everyone,
I was wondering, does it look bad if I email McGovern asking for a status update? I haven't received an interview yet and as a re-applicant with a much better application this time I'm feeling disheartened that it hasn't come yet. I've gotten II from UTMB, TAM, SHSU, UHCOM so far...
Also my LORs were really strong, one of them was from an ER physician/ professor who works at Memorial Hermann and McGovern.

They state in their emails (after you submit your secondary) they do not accept updates at all and can't update you on your status, sadly. 🙁 but I feel you in terms of an interview. I'm waiting too. They interview thru January so still plenty of time!! The wait sucks but all we can do is hope!

You have more interviews than most applicants!
All that is left is waiting. If you are still in college, send your fall term grades to TMDSAS and they will be forwarded to your schools.

Schools that do accept updates want things like papers published, awards won, new grades.

Question for those who completed interview at McGovern already: Is there a way to view your interview schedule and interviewers without launching the interview platform? I know there is a video interview tab, but just want to confirm that clicking that tab to view my interview schedule the morning of interview day won't automatically start the video interview.

You're good to click the video interview tab. It just has info on it, and you'd have to push the "start interview" buttons to actually begin the interviews.

Did McGovern get removed from anyone else's rank list/pre-match page?

Some of my other prematches disappeared... I called the admissions offices and they said everything is fine on their end, and TMDSAS isn't sure what happened either

Yeah, same. I contacted McGovern and they don't know what happened. Still waiting on a response from TMDSAS.

Anyone who has already been admitted?, how long did it take after the interview to get that email/call/etc?

I interviewed early October and prematched 10/15, so it took less than two weeks. There really is not a set time frame in which you can expect to hear back. They send out acceptances in waves. Applicants interviewed prior to 10/15 would have been considered for the first pre-match wave that went out on 10/15. Your acceptance could come anywhere from less than two weeks after an interview to months afterwards. Based on the previous year, the next wave may go out ~mid-November.

Yup same here! Only thing I would add is my friend last year interviewed around the same day as I did this year and did NOT pre-match 10/15. But she pre-matched 2 months later in December. So if you already interviewed and do not get your pre-match in Nov, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll have to wait until the match in March.

also @Chitaku congrats, perhaps we'll see each other next fall 🙂

I've heard that if one doesn't have an interview by the end of November, then chances are it probably won't come. Last years' thread showed people getting IIs in late November, but I didn't see any in December or beyond. Given this cycle has been significantly effected by COVID, does anyone have any thoughts on when the last round of IIs will probably go out for TMDSAS schools? I want to mentally prepare myself for when to accept the results of this cycle.

I'm trying to avoid this forum as much as possible and trust the process, but it's hard because McGovern is my top choice D:

This year the application deadline, pre-match window, and Match Day have all been pushed back a month.
Let's all acknowledge that we won't be able to strictly compare this year to others.

Thank you for keeping me in check @wysdoc! I'm closing all SDN tabs now 😆

If being on the forums is increasing your anxiety, take a step away for a little bit.
Check emails & spam mails daily, and school portals twice a week.
This year the waiting will be harder because you could ordinarily go hang out with non-pre-med friends to keep things in perspective, while this year we are glued to our virtual reality more than ever 😳

Is it a bad idea to email the school about an earlier interview date? When I got my II there were only spots in early December, but I am being told that there are spots open for November now. Or should I just keep my date and not bother the school?

It most likely means that those interview dates got filled up. I wouldn't bother them.

“Being told” by whom?
If the school is offering you an earlier date, go for it.
If you are reading that “somebody” got a November date, it’s probably due to another person canceling and the school filling in.

I know some people that got interview invites today, and they had dates open in November. I just want to see if it would be okay to email Mcgovern and ask for an earlier interview if they had any spots open up last minute that they needed to fill.

If you can no longer change the date on the system (check if possible), you can ask if you can interview earlier if there are dates open. There is nothing wrong asking if your December dates cause problems with exams or something like that if you are still in school or for some other reason. If you are unable to do it systemically, you need to try to come up something plausible for requesting it (don't say you will have a better chance at admission or something because the school does not believe that).

Does anyone know roughly how many interviews McGovern sends out ? I went onto MSAR and the data listed is for the first year class..
and after getting an interview how many acceptances do they send?

By first year class I believe it means the incoming M1s from whatever cycle that data was pulled from (2018 or 2019 I'm guessing?). McGovern typically interviews around 930, but could be more this year given the significant increase in applicants. There's no way for those of us outside the admissions process to know how many they accept but I've seen people estimate that schools admit between 1.5x to 2x their class size so maybe 460.

McGovern completed 965 interviews last year for EY 2020 and stated that they plan to stick to that interview volume this year, even with the shift to virtual interviews.

Also will acceptances to texas residents begin during the prematch offers? asking for mcgovern and also in general about the schools that take part in prematch

Yes! All TMDSAS schools take part in prematch! However, Baylor and TCU do not as they are AMCAS schools. Also, prematch offers at most TMDSAS schools have already started going out.

Texas applicants to TMDSAS schools are eligible for prematch offers between October 15, 2020 and January 31, 2021.

I have stats that are on par with the accepted students who started this fall at McGovern and my app was complete in July but still no II. I am a bit disappointed as I am highly interested in this school and I see now January interview dates are being offered. Is there anything I can do to see what is going on? Is anyone else in a similar situation?

In general, I feel that it's ill-advised to ask a school where you are in the application process, unless you have significant updates.

Additionally, the average MD accepted applicant is right around McGovern's averages, and they really seem to care a lot about essays and ECs. With only 1,000 interview slots, stats alone won't be enough. They'll certainly do holistic review with the solid amount of essays they have. There's plenty of LizzyM > 80 people who won't hear back from McGovern. They'll likely interview until mid-January, but many of us applicants are still waiting.

For those who have interviewed here, did you feel like it was fairly relaxed or was it more robotic?

@PedroBread Was it more like them asking about you and your activities or did they also throw in ethical qs
I would prepare for both. Mine definitely leaned one way, but I don't want to tell you which way just in case your interviewers go about it a different way! To me, it seemed like the interviewers had a great deal of control over the questions they asked and the direction the interviews went. Because of that, you will also have a decent amount of pull in how the interview goes. If you're laid back and easygoing, that's probably how your interview will be.

People who are interviewing today - is your video interview tab up yet?

I thought one of them was very relaxed and another one just asked me 50 to 100 questions. I felt like I did not have time to think about my answers. The weirdest interview experience.

I had a very similar experience

Adding on to this, I think it's also relative. My first two TX interviews were at UTSW and McGovern and I thought they were very relaxed but in comparison to my later interviews at, for example, Long or El Paso, they were rapid-fire question interviews. No horror stories for me in Texas (yet) at least, all of them are pretty chill.
