Based off past years, anyone know around when the next round of prematch offers will be released?

Historically, they have sent prematch offers on Oct 15 and December 20th-ish. However, the pre-match periods now extends to Jan 31st (usually ends Dec 31st) so will be curious to see how that affects their prematch offer schedule. Hoping they will send out a batch in the next week or two to make up for the fewer offers that appeared to be extended on Oct 15th with the delayed interview cycle, but who knows...🤷‍♂️

Hello guys,
Those of you still waiting for an interview from McGovern like myself, don't lose hope. I emailed them back in Sept about interview order because I noticed people who submitted after me getting interviews and they replied saying they don't interview in any particular order and expect to interview possibly into February. I also talked to one of my mentors who suggested I email them a letter of intent because it CANT hurt anything. It may not help but it definitely doesn't hurt in my opinion. Hang in there!

Did you happen to ask if they would be okay with emailing a letter of intent? Only concern I have with doing so is in the application completion email they sent it states that they do not accept any updates sent directly to the school. So don't know if that would come across as not following directions or being impatient. @wysdoc can you please school me with your wisdom on what you think?

This sounds like they don't want any updates, sorry.
If you are still a college student though, be sure to enter your Fall 2020 grades on the TMDSAS portal.
TMDSAS will update and recalculate your GPA and send this automatically to the schools you applied to.

This may help your case if you have a great Fall term, and since it is coming from TMDSAS it is not an update from you "sent directly to the school."
Good luck & the post right above this stated McGovern will have some interviews in February too.

But Fall 2020 final grades aren't out till mid-December, right?

Anyone interview on 11/6 and still not have it pop up on the school ranking? Been nearly three weeks now -- Should I call/reach out?

No pre-match offer from them yet, but I did get a nice mask and a magnet in the mail today!

I got a postcard earlier this week but no mask or magnet ☹️ Hopefully it’s on it’s way because I would totally rep it!

This could mean absolutely nothing but the postcard I got is different than this one. It was a thank you for attending the interview but then mentioned something about hopefully inviting students back in the spring for an in person tour. Also no mask or magnet yet. Anyone else get this one?

I don’t believe it means anything. I received both — the post card you mentioned soon after my interview day and then received the mask/magnet this week.

Could it be that the mask and magnet recipients are the ones marked for prematching? Maybe those who have prematched can shed some light on their experience.

Or just that the Med student or work study student who was supposed to go to the post office didn’t do it.

Nope! Prematched and didn’t receive a mask or magnet. Maybe it’s a consolation for not prematching 😉

@current MSXs here or anyone who knows someone that is — does McGovern give incoming students anything? These Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals for tech are so tempting lmao. Tryna see if we get anything besides a magnet/mask

I don’t think they do. I follow this YouTuber called Med head and his welcome package didn’t include any tech whatsoever.

I got myself an iPad but holding out on getting a Mac until I know what the school is looking for.

I doubt the colleges are giving out computers or ipads in Texas. UTSW recommends having a minimum config for windows and apple and here is what they provided to MS1 this year.

Brief Summary Regarding Specifications – Your laptop needs to meet the technical specifications outline in the Student Technology Requirements for Medical Students document (see attached). Minimum specifications for a Windows laptop include a processor of at least 2.0 GHz with 4GB of RAM, though strongly recommended you get more. For a Mac laptop, minimum specifications include a processor of at least 1.8 GHz with 4GB of RAM, though strongly recommend you get more.

Discussion – I know many of you are having to face the tough decision of purchasing a new laptop or keeping your current one. While older students can advise you on their experience, it’s my goal to make sure you are prepared for the least amount of technical issues as possible. To do this, I wrote the technical specifications based upon the applications you will be using. To ensure you have the least amount of problems, you need to have a laptop that meets the specifications laid out in the Student Technology Requirements for Medical Students document (see attached).

To highlight some of the applications you will be using, your laptop will be expected to run:

  • Examsoft/Examplify (exam application)
  • Complete Anatomy
  • Virtual dissection slides
  • Handle multiple applications simultaneously: PowerPoint, PDF Viewer, Mediasite (lecture capture), and a personal note application

McGovern MS1 here. My advice would be to wait until next year to buy any new tech for med school. Our IT department will send out detailed criteria of required tech specs over the summer to all prospective students, which could change from what is currently on our school website. Pretty much everybody from my cohort took advantage of the back-to-school sales that occurred right before our orientation, which had some great deals comparable to what you would find for Cyber Monday.

Does anyone know when OOS can expect to hear back post interview?

I know of a couple OOSers who got the A in mid-December last year. Not sure if that will hold true in this wacky year, but I'd say it's a rough ballpark.

As an MS2 at McGovern, I can attest that this is the wisest choice you can make if you'll be coming here next Fall. I'd even go so far as to say that it's your best bet regardless of where you go.

I see that they've been sending out ii's every 1-2 weeks consistently since at least September, but I haven't seen anything since 11/13, and now it's been over 2 weeks..does this mean spots might be gone or they're no longer looking at apps? Or am I just being a paranoid premed lol? Life got in the way and I completed super late (10/25), but I'm IS, have LM 78 WARS 94, and would love to go here- just wondering if I still have a chance?

Two weeks after 11/13 would have been the week of Thanksgiving so likely just delayed due to the holiday week. They are definitely still looking at/reviewing apps so don’t be worried about that.

I do believe they have sent out invites for mid-January interview dates (last known interview date for McGovern this cycle is 1/29 at the moment) so open interview slots are likely getting slim. However, there will likely be high turnover in IIs with new waves of prematches and AMCAS acceptances that will shuffle the TX applicant pool.

You have excellent stats for McGovern so you should have one of the best shots of any applicant to receive an II just off stats (and if your EC match your GPA/MCAT accomplishments). Hope McGovern sends an II your way soon!

What day of the week does McGovern typically send out interview invites on? / When is their next expected round to be sent out?

I know that we don't know for sure but any educated guesses are much appreciated as I haven't been following bc I'm out of state

I received my II on a Tuesday but wysdoc over on Republic of Texas Cowboy Code has been keeping a tracker of when invites & acceptances have been sent out. If you check, you may be able to find a pattern (or not).

I got mine on a Monday but I'm pretty sure they're random just based on past invitation dates

Does anyone know when they will be sending information out about their housing options? I pre-matched and would love to be able to live at one of their facilities!

That information will be released Spring 2021. Keep in mind that UT Housing is high in demand (at least it was the last time I checked), and incoming MS1s are low on the totem pole, so expect to be placed on a waiting list unless you are lucky enough to snag a vacancy. If you’re really chomping at the bit to secure housing, I would Google apartments around the Med Center and sign up for virtual tours to explore your options in case UT Housing doesn’t work out.

To those who prematched, have any of you received a packet of information or anything?

Since there will be some students who change their minds or end up matching somewhere else, most schools save their detailed packets for
after Match Day :highfive:

I didn't even think about it being a holiday- you make a great point there. Thank you for sharing your thoughts/detailed response & positivity! This definitely makes me feel a lot better, thank you!! Best of luck to you as well:happy:

Is there anyone who already interviewed with McGovern who could please tell me about their experience/tips? This is my only interview invite so far and I would love to do well.
Also, I'm surprised they took interest because I'm just a 506 MCAT/ 3.77 cGPA/ 3.67 sGPA student. Do y'all know what McGovern seems to value in their candidates?
Did you get the invite today? Congrats!!

I have similar stats as you and got an II a couple weeks back. I too was surprised and was like what part of my application did they like so much? And should I try to emphasize that during my interview?

The interviews at McGovern are typically very relaxed and conversational. During my first interview, they asked me more traditional questions along the lines of "why medicine" and "tell me more about XYZ experience listed on your application". My second interview was fun because we just talked about my research the whole time so it went by really fast.

I would recommend doing a mock interview before hand just to get into the mindset of that situation since it's your first time. Other than that, I wouldn't stress too much and just recommend that you think about some responses to typical interview questions and make sure you can elaborate on your experiences in more detail if they ask. McGovern was my first interview too and I was really nervous, but coming out of it I realized I had nothing to worry about because the students and faculty are extremely friendly and welcoming. Best of luck to you! 🙂

Just going to throw this out there for future reference, everyone. Interviewing at McGovern is a very laid back experience. I'd be very shocked if you got "pressure" questions designed to make you crack. Since starting at McGovern in 2019, I have yet to hear of anyone getting a question like that. Generally speaking, they want to get to know you as a person - they want to know what makes you who you are, not see if you have an answer to all of medicine's problems.

If you're selected for an interview, they know that you can perform at the academic level needed to succeed in medical school. At this point, they want to know if you'd be a good "fit" for the school, and vice versa. One piece of advice I typically give to interviewees the morning of interview day is to just be yourself. At the end of the day, your personal characteristics and values are why you were selected to interview, so by simply being yourself, you're highlighting the most important aspect of your application.

Like others have said, the interview was very relaxed. They asked off-the-wall questions and were interested in the weirder parts of my app. The experience was really authentic so I wouldn't worry about pressure. Good luck

So, I saw this question asked before, but I didn't see an answer, so I'll ask it again, if anyone has an idea: is McGovern considered more pre-match or more match heavy?

They specifically avoided answering this question during interview day lol, so I would guess they're just somewhere in the middle. They said it largely depends on the applicant pool for that year, and that there *may* be more pre-match offers sent out
