Hi travistravis,

If this of any help I just got an email from them saying that they have not received one of my recommendation letters yet. I'm now asking my US Prof about this because I thought he had sent it earlier.
On top of this, if you remember, I still haven't even sat for my MCAT yet.

I guess this means that they are still going through the application process of a lot of students and yours is probably still in the queue. Just hope for the best now and hopefully you'll hear from them soon.

yay! just got accepted. very excited!! good luck everyone!!

i would be ever so appreciative if you could provide even a smidgeon of insight in to the specific questions they asked you..? thanks!! 😀

I just received an email indicate that they have recieve all my documents required and undergo process....

Hi Travis, I received the invite on 29 Dec. But there are several interview dates, and they generally give you 2 weeks notice, so don't give up hope yet! I didn't get the confirmation email, but I emailed Tammie and she confirmed they received everything.

really short notice, just 2 weeks.......but i still dun get the invitation yet....i hope i can have the interview in early feb

cross your fingers then. You have much more time to prep though.

All you can do is just hope for the best. As well take the time to focus on your work or gain more experience working in the community etc.

I am sure there are a lot of applicants and with limited number of interviews; they are screening very carefully.

Just cross your fingers and good luck. :xf:

Not sure but is anybody arriving in Durham on the Thursday?

Happy New Year!

wish you a good interview and happy New Year!
I am still waiting for news from duke nus

I'm also waiting for news post-interview...🙁 This is so nervewracking. Has anyone apart from Labgod and Fuzi heard anything?

any advice to those of us with interviews coming up...? 😳

Thanks for your well wishes!

I don't know how worthy my advice would be as I haven't heard back yet but here is my two cents. Also, I interviewed in Singapore so I don't know what the Durham interviews are like.

I would prepare for this interview in the same way as for other med school interviews...y'know, read over your application a few times, make sure you have a good answer for the "Why medicine?" question, check out the SDN feedback etc.

I would also think a little bit about what specifically about Duke-NUS (and Singapore) that appeals to you. Also, think about what questions you want to ask your interviewers about the school. Duke-NUS is a pretty new school with many details that still need to be ironed out and asking questions about those details shows that you are enthusiastic and really thinking about whether the program is a good fit for you.

Other than that, I would say relax, have fun (or at least try to), be yourself and let your enthusiasm shine through.

Hope this helps! Good luck to those interviewing this week!

Hi everyone, came across this forum alittle too late. I've attended my interviews in singapore in late Nov last yr and am awaiting to hear from the school.

Just wondering if anyone who attended the interview in Nov or Dec 2008 in Singapore has heard any news from Duke-NUS already. So far, it seems that those who have received acceptance letters are those who interviewed in the states.

Thanks! 🙂
And all the best to those with upcoming interviews!

Hi!

I also interviewed in Nov in Singapore and have not heard back. Good luck!

sounds like there wont be any more interview days in US - but there will probably be more in Singapore i think

Hi all!
If you were in Durham for the applicant day, PM me if you want to keep in touch!
Best of luck!!!

:xf:

I think it went well. Whats done is done and I have no regrets 🙂. So now its the waiting game! :xf:
I would love to attend this type of program! It was so different in a good way! I guess time will tell.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this forum. Just submitted my secondary app today. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I can get an interview. Anyone who just submitted their secondary app too? It seems almost everyone here is in the interview stage already. Congrats to those who were accepted btw! 🙂

does anyone know how many people total (Asia and NA interviews) were being interviewed? I vaguely recall a number around 300 with 50 or some odd spots in the 09 intake

and where on the site it gave the breakdown of previoius intake statistics?

I remember seeing it once but now I can't find it😕.

If you scroll down a little, there is a chart with the enrollment stats. According to the chart, there were 147 interviews in 2008 with 48 applicants accepted. I'm guessing, however, that more applicants were actually accepted, its just that only 48 students actually enrolled.

Thanks.

I knew I didn't make it up. lol.

Looking at past years, it's essentially 1/3 chance after makiing it past interviews.

I thought they'd increase the intake though considering that they are moving to larger facilities, but smaller is probably better for the Team GMS.

smaller is indeed better for the team GMS. you would think that with the new facilities they could accomodate more people... however at my interview last week they mentioned that they would like to eventually have incoming classes of 75 people.

Are you sure that they want to have 75 applicants recruited? When I was interviewed, they still told us that they did not plan to recruit more than 50.

While it does seem like new facilities means that Duke-NUS could accommodate more students, I don't think the facilities alone are the limiting factors in admitting more students. It could also be the number of clerkship spots available at SGH and KKH. It might be difficult to accommodate more students per class because there just aren't enough resources to have them in rotations all at the same time.

Since they will be moving to the new campus March this year, do you suppose they increased the intake for 2009? I need every shred of hope I can get!

Oh, and the "infamous BlackTalon" wishes everyone who interviewed on 13 Jan (and everyone else) the best of luck. (Those of you who were there, you know what I'm getting at with the "infamous" thing. LOL) Keep in touch regarding any progress, ok?

PS: I contacted Tammie about the admissions process, and was surprised to hear that there are another 2 committees over the ADCOM! Juz sharing...

I asked at the interview, and was told that they are planning for a class of 50 this year with the increase to 75 planned for future years. However, I was informed quite decisively that they may have a few more than 50 if there are applicants they just cant bear to reject. So there is hope!! :xf:

exactly! they are still in the planning stages of establishing residencies, and they havent even had a class go through the research year yet. i think they will probably hold off a bit until they work out the system and troubleshoot any major issues...

Ah... not so good news for this year's intake then... 🙁

Still good news. Thank you.
Waiting is really boring.

I find it funny that they ask you to fill out the fin aid app prior to being accepted? Is that standard with everyone who was interviewed?

What do they really gain from that? Not a part of the application evaluation I hope! 😕

Good point. I never considered that it might be used for evaluative purposes. I simply assumed they wanted to expedite things. Hmm...

relax! they cant consider it in who they select, it's need-blind.

at the interview, im pretty sure they said something about wanting to tell us the financial aid package they could offer us at the same time as our acceptance in order to allow us to make the most informed decision possible...

Does anyone know when the admissions committee meets? That way I can schedule myself to be nervous only on those particular days...

Don't think such info will be available, and might not be of much use even then. From what I understand from Tammie the applicants are considered in no particular order so you can't be sure when yours is being reviewed.

Wow.... I wish I knew about this thread before I interviewed! It seems like this is a great group of applicants supporting each other during this application period. I read through all these posts, and just want to add my support to everyone else that is waiting. The process is nerve-wracking, but this pressure should be nothing compared to the pressures we will all feel when we are all medical professionals. So kick back and relax while you wait.

As to the number of acceptances debate, I remember Dr. Kamei emphasizing that 50 was the magic number this year as well. Good luck to everybody waiting to hear back!!!!

this is from the duke-nus admissions FAQ section:

The Duke-NUS has a “rolling” admissions process. This means some applicants can be offered early admission, if
- They complete their application to the Duke-NUS early
- Are short-listed for interview at an early date
- Are of high caliber in terms of the admissions criteria

Therefore, there is a slight advantage for those who can complete their application early. Most applicants are informed of the admissions decision by April.

Don't give yourself additional stress! You will get ulcers! 😉
Just keep yourself busy and just enjoy life!

You will know by April at the latest so no worries.

HAHAHA channer that is HILARIOUS! Yeah, actually they do. I heard that the adcom only meets every Sunday at 12 midnight. . . . . . . 😴

Anyway, interviewed at Duke-NUS last Tuesday with a bunch of really great people. Within a few hours, we could gel together really well. Guess we were bonded over 3-in-1 coffee and the incessant need to pee. Met the year 1s as well and they were really awesome: reassuring and had totally no airs about them.

To those with interviews coming up:

I know you have been reading loads of "dont worry!" "relax!" but still, you're gonna worry anyway. At least I did. I don't think it was the air-conditioning. I was seriously quivering! But once I stepped inside the room, I felt strangely at ease. Both of my interviewers were REALLY nice and for a moment there, I felt like I was talking to my parents. -_-

I didn't get any ethical questions. I wasnt asked anything about my research experience. It was really personal questions, like "what do you do for fun" "what do your parents work as" and "Do you have many friends?" I wished they asked me more about my undergrad degree or research! Or at least the question I prepared alot for - the Singapore healthcare policy! I would have rattled off.

Anyway, I summarized my life thus far in 30 minutes. The catered lunch was really good. 😀

Duke-NUS is really awesome. The new campus is a stunner. (at least on the outside) They should just accept allll 200 of us..

They seriously asked you that?

and the food was good....seriously? lol North Carolina has REALLY bad food

Thanks for the responses, guys.

kimmi, I concur the food at the Singapore interviews was pretty good! I kind of lament the fact that I was too nervous about the on-the-spot essay to take full advantage of it.

You're completely right, Onestep, I really need to focus on something else during my spare time. I guess I'm just antsy because I'd like to have some kind of decision before my next interviews so I know where I stand. Wishful thinking, I guess. Whatever happens, happens. I just have to be patient.

And it doesn't help that obsessively reading SDN only serves to fuel my neuroses.

Maybe I should knit. Knitting is calming, right?

hahaha.... I've been meaning to start knitting myself. Other things that work for me: Taichi, Yoga, skipping stones.

Maybe we can start a knitting club and come up with a way to finance our medical education.

Hey Kimmi,

We probably met that day during the interviews. The questions they asked me were kinda weird. And were off a standard list. I saw the interviewer referring to it. Stuff like... "Describe your most embarrassing moment". The other interviewer did ask me about my research though.

And yes, the food was quite good. Too bad I can't eat most of it because of my food allergy.

So..... since everyone seems to be waiting around, I thought I'd liven up this forum by asking everyone why they want to be "Physician-Scientists".

I hope this gives people something to talk about while waiting for good news.👍

Any takers?😀
