You've answered my question in regards to your personal situation, albeit vaguely, and somewhat defensively. I was asking with the mindset that it would be nice if we could put our experiences together to better prepare for potentially upcoming cycles. If we could alter the output even a bit with our collective knowledge, why shouldn't we? If you're feeling even a bit indignant at your situation, this is how you would use your head and fight back, actively, unless you want to continue being a victim of this, as you say, increasingly competitive process. I am not as clueless as to wonder why people get rejected, which seems to be what you implied with your post. I am however, asking for what specific reasons people think they've had an unsuccessful cycle(s). Subtle difference.

No, not if someone was deemed a successful enough candidate to get 8 or more interviews over two cycles, but still be left with no acceptances in hand. For the general application pool, yes, considering most do not even have sufficient numbers to be considered competitive. But that's not the group of people we're talking about here.
