haha, I think I met you, thankfully I did, or I would have had to wait another 2 hours.

Major congrats on all your successes!😀

Did you receive the notice by e-mail or by mail?

I totally remember you! 😛 Thanks for the congrats! You're interviewing at some nice schools; im sure you'll get good news from them soon. :luck:

I heard from Stony Brook via mail. UPS, no email. Your decision might be on the way. Good luck!

Haha, your app puts mine to shame. 😳 Hopefully you're right.

You'll no doubt have some very hard decisions to make. 🙂

How quick is the turn around? I interviewed on 10/30. They said about 6 weeks is the time frame but I really hope they don't wait the full six weeks!

Hopefully you'll have similar hard decisions so I can ask for advice 😉. Seriously though, it's nowhere near over. There's still many months left. Keep the faith!

I think it took ~ 3 weeks for me to hear back.

My interview is about a week from now, but I haven't received the email containing the itinerary. Is this normal?

I received my itinerary email EXACTLY one week prior to my interview.

this comment makes me feel that we'll hear back exactly 6 weeks from the interview date. My student host also said he heard exactly 6 weeks after his interview.

Ok, so I got the itinerary. I have to be there by 11 AM, so I'm just going to drive in the night before. Unfortunately, no student host.

For those who've interviewed already - where did you stay? How far was it from the school? How much did it cost? How far in advance did you make reservations? I haven't made any yet, I hope that isn't a problem.

Sorry, I know it's too many questions at once, but any help will be awesome!

Interviewed there last week Thursday, November 5th. Was a good day, especially the video 😉

Where did you stay?

Holiday Inn Express - It was a MUCH nicer hotel and room then I expected. I didn't have a car and the girl at the front desk was cool and showed me how to walk to Chili's/Quiznos/etc which is a few minutes down the street.

How far was it from the school?

7 Minutes. Go to the front desk and you can sign up for the FREE Holiday Inn shuttle which will bring you right to the school at the time you need and will drop you off right at the front entrance. I am very happy I asked about this as I didn't have to go threw the hassle of waiting for a taxi, etc.

How much did it cost?

I payed $138.89 for a good sized room with a huge bed and a flat screen TV and free WiFi.

How far in advance did you make reservations?

3 weeks prior. I scheduled it in case Ms. Acevedo could not locate me a student host. I would have canceled if she did, but I ended up needing it.

How soon have people been getting notified for acceptance? Is it the same rate for watilist/rejection as well? I sent them my intent; I really hope I get in, heck I'll take a WL too!

Thank you so much Zona!

I'm about 2.5 hours away, so technically I could just drive in the morning of the interview, but I don't want to take any chances. I'm pretty sure that when I really really need to make the right exits, I'll end up making the wrong ones. Always happens.

Just out of curiosity though, if you guys were about 2.5 hours away and needed to show by 11:15 AM, would you drive in the same morning, or would you arrive the day before?

I had an 8:15 AM appointment in Albany this past Thursday. I got up at 4AM and made the 3hr drive no problem. For me, it's less of a hassle than making overnight arrangements. I'm doing the same for Upstate on Monday. 🙂

I would probably just drive in. 2.5 hours isn't too bad. I'd probably leave at about 7:30 am just to be safe however. Up to you though!

I would drive in too! If you're super early, you could take a walk around the undergrad campus or hang out in the starbucks in the hospital lobby 🙂

I think I'm beginning to change my mind. 3/3 vote for driving in haha.

Anyone else interviewing this Thursday?

Has anyone heard back about MD/PhD yet? Complete in early Sept and not a peep here 🙁

Interviewing next week, the 19th. It's kinda nice that we don't have to be there until 9:45.

lol I'm interviewing the same day! But my e-mail says I don't have to be there til 10:15. Too bad I probably will be to nervous/excited to spend the extra time sleeping in.

So I hear that Stony Brook is not very friendly to OOS applicants... And I know this question is pretty subjective, but maybe some of yall who are more familiar with the school than me would know - do yall think an OOS has any reason to pay the app fees with an MCAT under 30 (and everything else being pretty good)?

I was told by someone on the adcom that they absolutely do not discriminate based on residency.

For anyone else accepted, I really need your help:

I received acceptance letter today and it asks for "letter stating intention to enroll at Stony Brook University School of Medicine" along with deposit in order to secure place. There is no standard reply form.

First, did everyone else receive this letter?

Also, do they really expect a letter of intent so early? I thought AMCAS rule was that we could hold multiple acceptances until May 15.

Hey, congrats! I was accepted today too. Very exciting. So, no worries, the "letter of intention to enroll" is just a letter to hold your spot. A medical school can't force you to attend, and it's absolutely fine to hold multiple spots pre-May 15 (May 1 for some). Call them if it would make you feel more at ease, but just send them a letter saying that you'd like them to hold the spot for you, along with the other documents that they ask for.

Congratulations again. 🙂

When did you interview? Thanks!

How is it that you were able to get a reply so fast when they told me it takes around 6 weeks? This also happened to two other people I know and now I'm getting worried that I'm going to get a rejection as I interviewed way before you and the other two I know as well.

i interviewed a couple days before premad also and have heard nothing.

Interviewed: 10/20. Accepted: 11/16

OOS - MCAT 34, non-trad, second cycle (1st for SB)

I suppose it depends on the implications of the word "discriminate." A huge percentage of their students are from Long Island, another large chunk from New York state at large. I am sure, like all state schools, they have a target number of OOS students to pad the budget (can get in state tuition after 1 year if I remember correctly), but they need to be a large majority in-state to get their money from the government.

I got in too, interviewed 11/03, oos, yay, first acceptance 👍

If we recently submitted the secondary, how long is the turnaround time for an interview?

i'm assuming they're accepting the allstars first and then hopefully we get in later on. here's to hoping.:xf:

Or maybe our interviewers did not attend the most recent committee meeting because they were busy?

Or maybe they hate us.

I would frankly be slightly ****ed if I was flat out rejected here because I loved the school and had extremely positive interviews. If "That was a masterful interview! You would be a perfect fit for our school" is followed by a small rejection envelope in the mail anytime soon, I'll probably enter a lifelong depression, break up with my girlfriend, and live in a dirty house with multiple cats for the rest of my life.

CYA!

wow thats impressive feedback from one of your interviewers. one of mine tore me a new one, but the ms2 i had was really nice and i had a great interview with her. the waiting game has taken my soul. at the end of this process i will have no respect for humanity and will pursue a residency in pathology or anesthesiology.

wow, I definitely should not have checked here...and now I have the jitters. I was interviewed 9/22 and still haven't heard anything. However, this is what my interviewer told me: "Post interview it's a coin flip. You basically have a 50/50 chance. 20% are immediately accepted, 20% are immediately rejected, and the remaining 60% are waitlisted. About half of those on the wait list eventually get in."

At the interview they said it takes about 6-8 weeks. Those rejected will get a small letter, those accepted will get an express mail envelope. Those waitlisted will get an email.

Everyday that I check the mail, I hold my breath dreading the small envelope. I sigh a sigh of relief when I get through all the small envelopes in my mailbox and realize none of them were from Stonybrook.

your choice of words... coin flip... is that almost to say that when it comes down to it, quality of application / quality of interviewed are just obscured, and those in the top 50 just aren't significantly different than those in the lower 50? Or that from your perspective, where you are sitting in the interview chair, it's a coin flip?

which gets me to thinking, and I should probably post this in the general forum, how much does the interview really matter? I know that the smart answer is to say that it varies by school. but my hunch is that it's absolutely critical. This is because, applicatants are just so similar on so many characteristics, and could widely vary on interview performance. So it can be used as a differentiating factor.

Also, I feel that they would use it to qualify your application. He writes well but can't speak well, he knows this or that about that extra curricular, showing that he really was committed.

Problem is, we are giving them a 40 page AAMCAS, 2 hour long interviews, and a long list of grades. They then try to internalize it all and come up with a 'holistic' interpretation of the students credentials. Problem is, that task is essentially cognitively intractable... making the decisions more or less random and making the only solution on the applicants part to apply widely.
