2014-2015 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well on the applicant portal where you set up arrangements at Olin Hall and rsvp to the pizza dinner it has the option of 7 AM breakfast with certain student groups like SNMA etc.

This was a problem on my interview day; the medical students have been informed to show up at 8, and sometime prior to 7 am the day of the interview the portal changed to show 8 am for breakfast, and it definitely said 7 am when I scheduled the interview (another interviewee had a screenshot to prove it). Bottom line is breakfast is supposed to be at 8, I guess.

II today! (Complete 8/22)

I actually found out because my mom texted me congratulating me. Sure enough, there was a letter in my mail inviting me to interview! Apparently they send letters home if a parent was at one point Wash U faculty.

I wasn't expecting this because my stats are so low for the school: 3.6/33.

No email, though. I'll call to schedule my interview today. Super excited! This is my first II!

Did anyone else ONLY get a letter?

All I got was a signed letter and a copy of the letter they sent to my mom. No email!

In my case, I didn't have anything show up in the portal until after I had called to schedule the interview.

November 3rd!

Guys think a 5:00pm flight out of St.louis after the interview is doable? And if I rented a car is there any parking available for Olin hall?

My flight out was at 4:55, and I made it with time to spare. The metro leaves from the med campus and goes straight to the airport. The interview ends around 2:30.

Does anyone know if WashU is receptive to additional LOR's? I just re-read their guide to applying PDF and they require 3 from professors and 1 optional one (total of 4), but I recently got a 5th LoR that I believe is very strong and I'd like to include it if possible.

I would not ride the metro past 9, honestly, unless I was with a group of people. Know too many solo riders that have been mugged.
I think it's fine late. Especially because you are just going to the medical center.

The metro station at the airport was all but deserted when I got on around 7:30 pm to ride to the medical center the night before my interview. It filled up as we went on but I'm not sure I'd want to be on there much later at night either.

The airport is the first stop going east so I'd expect it to be pretty empty.

FYI (from a 4th year student):
*Breakfast is at 8am, regardless of what the website says. they haven't updated it but it's definitely 8am. Go to it, because it's free and it's yummy.
*Not receiving an email for your invite is common and perfectly fine. Don't panic.
*The metro is a tad bit shady at night, but again: don't panic. Just don't linger at the stop and go up the stairs to the campus when you get off.
*The day is officially over at 2:30 I think, but I do believe a few applicants had interviews directly after that, so don't schedule your flight super close to that time.

Also, happy to answer any questions. Have very much enjoyed my time at Wash U. Good luck to all the applicants this year!

Anyone know when decisions could start to come out?

II yesterday! Signed up for the 11/6 date. Does anyone know where this date falls in WashU's interview cycle, i.e. is this still considered early or is it nearing the middle or even the end??? It doesn't seem like they have a super accelerated admissions process, but I really don't know. Thoughts?

They started their interviews the first week of October/last week of september

Thanks. How big are the interview day groups? I've been to schools that brought in as many as 36 as and few as 1 (me). Just trying to get a sense of how fast WashU moves.

There were only six of us at my interview

I think they're just filling up. I'm interviewing Nov 3rd, which is the soonest date I could get.

Just got an interview invite here! I was complete in late July I believe.

Ahh still waiting with a 7/30/2014 completion date.

Interview invite. Not sure when I was considered complete. My dean's certification was just arrived today and got the interview in the afternoon. No interview dates available after a Nov 14th briefly appeared before it was gone.

I'm having a bit of trouble interpreting the "detailed itinerary"... Can anyone who interviewed already help me out?

There are names of four different faculty members on mine (two are listed together), but it doesn't say which ones are interviews vs. presentations, etc. How many interviews are there in total? There's also something that just says "fourth year med student." Should I assume that one's an interview?

It's extremely difficult to interpret, I agree haha. The MS4 leads you on the tour.

Everyone has two interviews this cycle. One is a traditional open-file 45-minute interview with a faculty MD (or possibly PhD? not sure), the other is a shorter, 20-minute closed-file interview ("CFI") with a member of the admissions department administration.

When you check in at the admissions office you'll be given a personalized itinerary for your day, here's what mine said:

8:00 am - Breakfast with Medical Students in Shell Cafe (optional)

8:30 am - Check-in

8:45 am - Orientation

9:15 am - Tour with Fourth Year Medical Student

12:00 pm - Lunch with Faculty: Drs. So-and-so

2:00 pm - Financial Aid

2:30 pm - Dean's Wrap-Up

Interspersed between those my interview times, locations, and interviewers were listed as well.

Thanks! Makes a lot more sense now, haha. If you don't mind sharing, what did you think of the closed-file interview? This will be my first experience with it.

I thought it was low-stress, so nothing to be concerned about going in, but I did think it was odd; I got multiple questions about what experiences I've had, which seems like a waste of a closed-file interview.

Just FYI, the Dean's Cert truly isn't required to be considered complete and/or receive an II. Unless they specifically waited in your case (why would they?) it was just a coincidence that both of those occurred on the same day for you.

My thoughts exactly. Although for a small chance maybe the certificate triggered something or maybe they were going to give me an II in a short while but since they had to file my certificate they just decided why not then.

II today via email! I sent an "in the area" email on Friday!

Primary verified 8/8
File complete 8/26

I'm like hysterical right now 😀 Anyone else interviewing on Nov 11?
