2014-2015 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thought interviews were over for me, but very glad to be proven wrong! Bless you, WashU. I may have to schedule my date fairly late, because of all the workplace deadlines I'm going to need to meet before winter holidays. 🙁 @Friendly_female_house when will you be there?

Complete a ways back... I submitted the secondary shortly after receiving the invitation. Stats and such in mdapps.

Congrats!!!! I actually will be there in less than 2 weeks. So we'll be missing each other again!

II today, which is good because I've been bummed out about some deferred statuses. Wash U was off my radar but this is cool.

Congrats to those who have recently received IIs! Hope WashU will send some love my way. Been complete since early July.

Anyone going to be around for the 11/11 interview date? I'm OOS and I'd love to meet up and tour the city!

Interviewing in a week. What type of things should I be prepared to talk about for the interview?

It's a pretty standard one open file / one closed file. Nothing out of the ordinary since it's similar to most other schools.

It's extremely difficult to interpret, I agree haha. The MS4 leads you on the tour.

Everyone has two interviews this cycle. One is a traditional open-file 45-minute interview with a faculty MD (or possibly PhD? not sure), the other is a shorter, 20-minute closed-file interview ("CFI") with a member of the admissions department administration.

When you check in at the admissions office you'll be given a personalized itinerary for your day, here's what mine said:

8:00 am - Breakfast with Medical Students in Shell Cafe (optional)

8:30 am - Check-in

8:45 am - Orientation

9:15 am - Tour with Fourth Year Medical Student

12:00 pm - Lunch with Faculty: Drs. So-and-so

2:00 pm - Financial Aid

2:30 pm - Dean's Wrap-Up

Interspersed between those my interview times, locations, and interviewers were listed as well.
What did you talk about in the CFI?

So do they have a towel for you if you're staying in Olin hall or should I pack one? Also, how long does it take for the train to get from the airport to the medical campus?

OOS II just now! Complete about 2 weeks ago so this was a surprise.

I'm super excited to be interviewing here! I sent an "in the area" inquiry expecting a "Thanks but no thanks" response. My LizzyM is pretty low for WUSM, but I'm going to make the most of any opportunity they allow me! Anyone else interviewing end of Nov?

Is anyone else having difficulties scheduling the interview? No dates are showing up for me, and it seems their admissions office is closed when I call.

Anyone have any insight into why WashU seems to interview so many applicants (relative to the number of matriculants)? The MSAR lists 885 out-of-state interviews (out of 3,884 applications) for 98 matriculants 😕

This strikes me as an unusually low ratio of matriculants:interviews compared to other schools (at least relative to the ones I've applied to). Thoughts?

Could be because washu used to interview every washu undergrad
1. Pretty sure this is true. Had a friend that went to Wash U. Pretty low stats by any standards and he still got a courtesy interview. Wash U churns out premeds like no other.

2. They have a pretty low yield because people that typically get into Wash U are also considering the Ivies, John Hopkins, Stanford etc. I think it's almost 400 or so acceptances issued...

A quick sample of stats from some of the big names:
WashU: 3,884 OOS apps / 885 interviewed / 98 matriculated (ratio: 11.1%)
Hopkins: 5,541 OOS apps / 622 interviewed / 99 matriculated (ratio: 15.9%)
Harvard: 6,178 OOS apps / 801 interviewed / 143 matriculated (ratio: 17.8%)
Penn: 4,897 OOS apps / 776 interviewed / 131 matriculated (ratio: 16.8%)
Stanford: 4,285 OOS apps / 293 interviewed / 61 matriculated (ratio: 20.8%)
Michigan: 4,260 OOS apps / 399 interviewed / 90 matriculated (ratio: 22.6%)
Northwestern: 6,300 OOS apps / 613 interviewed / 126 matriculated (ratio: 20.6%)
Yale: 4,558 OOS apps / 682 interviewed / 87 matriculated (ratio: 12.8%)
UChicago: 4,563 OOS apps / 526 interviewed / 68 matriculated (ratio: 12.9%)
Baylor: 4,709 OOS apps / 279 interviewed / 47 matriculated (ratio: 16.8%)
Columbia: 6,076 OOS apps / 856 interviewed / 123 matriculated (ratio: 14.4%)

So, in retrospect, I retract my question. They're on the low end, but not too far away from the mean.

Interestingly, they interview around half (409 of 820 applicants) of in-state applicants (120 of which matriculate). 400 acceptances would be consistent with about half as many matriculants when considering both in-state and out-of-state. Also interestingly, residents of WA, WY, AK, MT and ID are considered in-state (MSAR).

Yeah to clarify, this is the wrong school. WashU is not the same as University of Washington. The WAMI applies over there because they lack schools themselves.

Haha! Thank you 😳 Right numbers the first time around.

WashU also does a courtesy interview for children of alumni. I think there are around 80-90 of those while only 8 got accepted last year.

Oh gosh, I'm from a huge WashU family, but my stats are barely up to par. Is this just a courtesy interview or do I actually have a shot?

41 children of alumni applied last year, 8 were accepted.

I'm in a similar boat, but I think that anyone that interviews has a shot if they're a stand-out applicant.

I might be mad for doing this, but I'm utterly burned out and broke from interviewing. This is an awesome awesome school, but I cannot rationalise spending any more money than I currently have. *stuffs II into t-shirt cannon and fires into the crowd* Hope one of you folks gets my spot!

Noooo this was my only chance to meet you in real life! 🙁

Awwwh... and we didn't get too much application overlap to begin with. 🙁 Crossing my fingers you get my interview spot! :xf:

I don't have an II to my alma mater, but I still live close by. My stats are below WUSM's averages.

Was anyone with a recent II able to successfully schedule their interview/talk to admissions?! They never returned my call, and there still don't seem to by any open dates on the portal!

I got my II provably 2 wks ago. No dates available online. Called on a Monday, someone picked up and took down my info. A couple days later, someone called back with available dates.

Thank you for that. I initially liked the interaction and personal approach of the call in to schedule approach. But it ends up being a bit of a loop.

I just spoke to one of the deans of admission about your problem. She said she'd look into it. If you want to, PM your name, I can get her to look more specifically. It really might just be a glitch. So far of all my 8 interviews, WashU def stood out being the most proactive in ensuring a good experience of the candidate and they do deliver in ways that are over the top. I am saying this as someone who had very little expectation but who had some experience in going about interviewing. You'll see for yourself once you are here! I now understand why the current student told me to "be excited". I am.

So true. It was a great interviewing experience.

Hmmmm something doesn't seem right/fit in what you guys are saying.
I got my II 4 days ago, and so far have not gotten a response to my email or voicemail I left them... Something isn't adding up. I guess I'll call them again tomorrow?

I am sitting in the admission office, PM me the name and the dean said she's more than eager to look into it right now. Also remember there was a weekend. So you are only 1-2 business days after you got II

Another note as a FYI, the first meeting for acceptances should be sometime this month!

Thank you so much for your help and talking to the dean about it! I got a call earlier today about scheduling my interview, so Im all good 🙂
I guess I just was impatient, because I was so so thrilled about the opportunity to interview here, that I didn't want to somehow do something wrong/miss something!

How often does Wash U give II just due to high stats?
