A quick
sample of stats from some of the big names:
WashU: 3,884 OOS apps / 885 interviewed / 98 matriculated (ratio: 11.1%)
Hopkins: 5,541 OOS apps / 622 interviewed / 99 matriculated (ratio: 15.9%)
Harvard: 6,178 OOS apps / 801 interviewed / 143 matriculated (ratio: 17.8%)
Penn: 4,897 OOS apps / 776 interviewed / 131 matriculated (ratio: 16.8%)
Stanford: 4,285 OOS apps / 293 interviewed / 61 matriculated (ratio: 20.8%)
Michigan: 4,260 OOS apps / 399 interviewed / 90 matriculated (ratio: 22.6%)
Northwestern: 6,300 OOS apps / 613 interviewed / 126 matriculated (ratio: 20.6%)
Yale: 4,558 OOS apps / 682 interviewed / 87 matriculated (ratio: 12.8%)
UChicago: 4,563 OOS apps / 526 interviewed / 68 matriculated (ratio: 12.9%)
Baylor: 4,709 OOS apps / 279 interviewed / 47 matriculated (ratio: 16.8%)
Columbia: 6,076 OOS apps / 856 interviewed / 123 matriculated (ratio: 14.4%)
So, in retrospect, I retract my question. They're on the low end, but not too far away from the mean.
Interestingly, they interview around half (409 of 820 applicants) of in-state applicants (120 of which matriculate). 400 acceptances would be consistent with about half as many matriculants when considering both in-state and out-of-state. Also interestingly, residents of WA, WY, AK, MT and ID are considered in-state (MSAR).
