2019-2020 Jefferson (Kimmel)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received an interview this morning and scheduled for 9/25. There was only this date in September as well as a couple spots in November to choose from, nothing in October.

Dang. They offered u that 9/25 date when that wasn’t there when I logged on before u. Either 1. They prefer some applicants to interview early over others or 2. Someone cancelled/dropped that date... who knows

I personally think it was due to someone dropping that date. This was the only early date along with one for each week of November. I think I just got lucky tbh.

How many letters is too many? I have 6 letters from variety of areas (college professors, research PIs etc.). Would it be too much if I sent all of them?

If you think the LoRs written are really good letters, send them all. I had 6 and they were all from professors and employers that I knew at least 3+ years and were rather close so I know they would speak about me more than just generic LoRs.

Has anyone sent an update yet? I'm wondering what the best way to format it is. Attached in a word doc or just in the text box of the email? How long should it be and who else should it be forwarded to? This is my top school so I just wanna make sure I'm doing things right 🙂

Sent one this morning about a publication! Just keep it short and simple.

“Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing to inform you that I recently had (Update X) happen. I also have continued to volunteer at (Update Y) and have accumulated Z hours.

I hope this update will assist in your review process. Thanks!

Sincerely,

Applicant”

Thank you! When were you complete? I've been under review for about 8 weeks now and I'm wondering if its a little early to send an update yet

Pretty much the first or second day possible lol. The only reason I submitted an update was because I thought a publication was worth sending immediately. If it was just an update on hours for an activity, I would have waited much longer.

Alongside what was suggested you could also throw in a fee sentences on why the school is a good match for you in the update, they like that too!!

If you have a significant update, go for it.

Feel free to message me if you have any more questions. (Ms1 at skmc here)

For those who know philly transit well: if I get on a 7am train at Penn station (NYC) and get to 30th st station (philly) by 8:32, I can make the 9am registration basically right on time (it lasts until 9:30am, so really I'm giving myself 30 minutes of wiggle room). Is that a solid game-plan or do I need to leave earlier? Typically i'd leave a bunch of "just in case" time, but I feel like the commute from NYC to philly is pretty tried and true, no?

So I’m taking the Amtrak, and it’s tried and true to always be on time, so I’m not worried about that personally. However, I was wondering how you’re gonna get from 30th St. Station to Jefferson? Subway (which line), bus, etc? I don’t know what I’m going to do for my interview in a few weeks.

when i google maps it there's a subway line that goes straight there. just going to follow what google maps tells me in real time. and yea i'm talking about amtrak too.

Where did you send the update to? I didn't see a place for it on the portal.

you can take the regional rail from 30th street station to Jefferson station (it stops at suburban in between but is like 10 min total) or you can uber.

It will be the blue MFL (Market-Frankford Line) Eastbound if you go the subway route

As someone who has a fairly significant commute in and works 5 minutes from Jefferson, I would leave extra time because sometimes SEPTA can’t get its act together. Especially this summer they’ve been overhauling with construction so delays and schedule changes have been much more frequent. It might not be an issue with Amtrak but an issue with 30th street station being backed up.

As mentioned above, you can either take the regional rail train to Jefferson or the subway market frankfurt line and get off at 8th and market. In my opinion, Market Frankfurt would be easiest because those trains run about every 8 minutes and regional rail is much more infrequent (I’d say about every 30 minutes but if you’d like to go this route I can send you the schedule if that helps). Getting dropped off at 8th and market versus Jefferson isn’t really going to make a difference in how far you walk. If anything, 8th and market is probably about 2 minutes closer. You could uber if you want, but it’s really not necessary because you will see tons signs for market frankfurt (it involves crossing the street just so you don’t think you’ve gone wrong when you end up outside lol). But if you need help, once you get off at 30th street station there are so many workers there in yellow vests you can ask them and they’ll be really helpful. It might sound weird that you have to cross the street but I promise you it’s not far at all.

For regional rail you can just bring cash and pay when they come around. For 8th and market you would get a ticket from a kiosk and there are like 10 of them right before you would walk down the steps to get on the subway so you can’t miss it. I hope this helps!

This has been so helpful, thank you!

Agreed with previous poster, septa can be unreliable at times. 30th street station is like the hub of philly public transport, so almost every train to get out of philly in a certain direction goes through
30th—->Jefferson station. Doesn’t matter where the trains final destination is if that makes sense, so they come extremely frequently and since they’re only two stops from each other, there’s a chance you don’t have to pay. If you download the Septa app, it’s uncharacteristically pretty well designed, you can just put in the two destinations and it will give you all the upcoming trains that will take you there. If you look right now you can see that like OP said, there’s def some delays. Hope that helps too. For anyone using septa at all, highly recommend the app as it can be a little overwhelming at first to navigate!

Take the Market frankfurd subway east bound and get off at 11th street. Then just make a eleft from Market towards walnut and you will be right there.

I know this was already asked in this thread but it wasn't answered so.. does anyone know if Kimmel is receptive to ITA emails?

I love all the different spellings for the Market-Frankford Line lol. This route is typically the best, and you can always use google maps and their transit function as well.

When I signed up yesterday there were dates in October and November..

the only dates available for II were in mid december. is this bad/too late? i really love this school. has anyone been able to see if there are closer dates? also, is there a way to check availability without rescheduling?
There is no such thing as a "late" interview at Jefferson. No matter when you interview they have open spots. Congrats on your II!

thank you so much!!! I have a quick question, though. Since it is rolling admissions, wouldn't interviewing sooner give you a better shot? Or is it diff at Jeff? Is there a significant difference between a november and a december interview?

I dont think they will interview and not have any spots for new students anymore.... If they interview till late spring, then a December interview should be ok. Also, if they only have December available, take it!!! An interview gives you more chance than no interview! Congrats!!!!

I submitted on 8/22, and it appears I just went under review today. Here's hoping it all goes well for me. Pretty surprised by the turnaround considering I submitted a bit later.

I submitted 8/28 and I believe I went under review in a couple days. Not sure if that is a good indicator of when you'll hear back, cause I noticed the same happened to me at Tufts and Georgetown

Wdym? Like it just showed as under review in the portal or you got a separate email?

In the portal, under application status, it appeared as "application under review" under "application complete."

Interesting. This process is so unpredictable.

Yea i believe under review means someone checked off if you were complete with all items in. It could be months before you hear back

So basically the portal tells you that you are complete, but then an adcom just confirms that?

I submitted end of August as well and was "under review" within an hour. I did have everything marked as complete except the secondary so maybe this made a difference in processing time, I'm not sure how or why. I still haven't heard anything though. I hope all goes well for you too, I just wanted to share this in case it gives any insight!

This is helpful! So I'm not gonna expect any speediness on their part, haha.

Interviews occur exclusively on Wednesday. Jefferson interviews all through April and does NOT interview for waitlist spots. I know people that interviewed on the last day and were accepted a week later. Keep in mind that Jefferson is one of the most applied to schools and gets upwards of 10,000 applications a year.

Anyone know how/if I should send an ITA to Jefferson? Live on the West Coast and traveling to PA for a Penn State interview in early November, would love not to have fly across the country a second time if I don't have to. Been complete here since 6/30.

Are there still spots open whenever you interview? i read through past threads, and that is what it seems like, but i dont understand how that can be if it is rolling admission. I am wondering if a diff of a few weeks between interview dates would change my chances at acceptance (have a conflict on my original day, only other option is a few weeks later). thank you

Like someone mentioned above... they don’t interview for waitlist. If you are getting interviewed you have a chance of being accepted. I interviewed in February and was wl before accepted and I know people who interviewed on the last interview day and got in without being waitlisted... that being said I dont think anyone knows if they ‘reserve’ a certain number of spots per interview day to be accepted or what they do. But the class is definitely not full until the last day of interview. They could get a bit more selective (maybe) but i dont think anyone knows exactly how it works.
Please feel free to correct me anyone.
