2019-2020 Jefferson (Kimmel)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Phew. I blame my head cold. Sorry for ringing the alarms for no reason, fam! Good luck to everyone!

Just added this school now. Really loved Philadelphia lol

Anyone had a positive outcome after an ITA update? Will be there three times these next two months, but don't want to bug them

Does anyone know if the school adds the thank you letters you submit to your file?

I've heard that Jeff really loves updates in general - not sure how receptive they are to ITAs though. Pretty sure it would be excessive to send 3 different ITAs though

Wait so Jefferson accepts update letters? How do we send them update tho? I didn’t see any information on their website

Is it absolutely too late if I wanted to apply to this school? OOS but have Philly ties

To those of you worrying about soft R, I applied last cycle and did not get an II until March. Hold off panicking until like....December lol. If they didn't expressly reject you you still have a chance until the end of the interview cycle.

Good luck to us all!

Damn when were you complete?

Do we know if both are open interviews? Is the student closed and faculty open?

Student one is closed. Have never seen any interviewee's file before interviewing them

So, I think at one point I mentioned that Philadelphia was a 2.5 hour drive for me. Today I learned that it’s a 4.5 hour drive AND that I’m bad at geography.

Anywho, where are the good cheesesteaks at? I don’t think I’ve ever had one, so tonight seems like a good time to get into the philly spirit.

If I were you I’d go for reading terminal market! You can get a cheesesteak at Carmen’s or go for roast pork at Dinic’s (arguably better) and end your night with a cannoli from Termini Bros🙂

Jim's Steaks, if anyone says anything else they're from Jersey.

Dalessandro's, no question

Hi, I'm interviewing here in December. Can anyone speak to the student visits? I'm interested in reaching out to stay with one of the current students, but I'm hoping it can be the night of the interview, not the night before. Does anyone know if we get a choice?

I interviewed last week and stayed with a student host the night before my interview. It was a great experience by the way. I don’t think you’ll have a problem staying the night of your interview however. The student hosts have no say on your admissions decision and are not affiliated with the admissions committee. They just volunteer to make your stay and visit to their school easier. If that means having to stay the night after your interview, then I don’t see why not. When you reach out to one of the hosts listed, just let them know when you will be staying and if that’s okay with them. More often than not, it’ll be a okay.

Thanks, that's super helpful. How did you like your visit? Are you a Penn resident?

I’m OOS. Actually, it was my first time in Philadelphia and my first interview of this season, but my experience was wonderful. The school is located in a great area, the staff is so welcoming and passionate about the school, and everyone wanted to make the day special and engaging for the interviewees.

Is this school rolling?

Also, any people who have interviews so far care to share any tips? I haven’t checked MSAR yet but I’m assuming it’s two open files with physicians/faculty/adcoms?

The interviews are actually super super chill- the students consistently remind you of that and I didn't believe them till I actually had mine. Just know your application and prepared to have a genuine conversation about your experiences. The adcoms really just want to get to know your experiences and any insights you gained from them. deep breath! this is by far one of the more chiller interviews on your path 🙂

Can confirm! Also their interview day lunch is amazing

Lol, I didn’t really know about it either. Anytime I tell people non premeds I’m interviewing at Thomas Jefferson, they give me a really confused look
Yeah I only knew about it cause someone in my undergrad goes there. I go here now and its quite good.

OK so question about application status -- I have not gotten ANY emails from Sidney Kimmel, but when I log into my portal today, I see in the "Status" section of my app that there is a Green check mark next to "Interview not offered." Is this their way of telling me I'm not getting an interview/am rejected? I attached a screenshot -- does anyone else have this in their status? Anyways, what a crappy way to learn that you're rejected if that's the case 🙁

Sorry...What does it say under communication status? It would show if they sent an email.

I'm sorry about that! Can I ask when you were complete?

I just checked my portal, and I don't have that last row at all yet. I was complete 7/10 and I feel like I'm next if this is what's in store... 😳

It

In communication status (which matches what I received so far via email), it just still says "supplemental Invite" and "Your secondary has been submitted!" I didn't even receive the complete email yet. Could this be because I applied to one of their special programs (PSAP), and my app is not complete yet for that program? I am in LOVE with this school, felt so strongly about the PSAP program being perfect for me, and I really hope this status doesn't mean they are done with me! I almost started to cry when I saw the new status posted. I'm still waiting on the special letters to be sent in support of my PSAP app (due 11/15), so very hopeful that this isn't a straight-up rejection. 🙁
Call them. Before 5 today. Ask.

I haven't even received the complete email yet... so I think you are fine, my friend! It just says "complete" in the status section. I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed that they are just waiting for the rest of my PSAP app!

Great suggestion... I unfortunately JUST saw this at 4:59... so not going to call at 4:59 on a Friday but I WILL call Monday morning. I'm so heartbroken to think I could be rejected even before my PSAP app is even complete. I will follow up on Monday to let you all know!! Thank you again for your support. <3

so i never received a complete email, submitted mid-august with all LORs and MCAT, but i logged into my portal today, which shows:

I’m sorry. Damn, I hate it when schools do this. I mean, how hard is it to send a simple email for Christ sakes?
I was complete in early July and have had radio silence, my portal still says app is under review, but to read that they are rejecting via the portal is really irritating.

I’m sorry, I’m pretty sure it’s a rejection. On last year’s thread someone had the same line on their portal and they called to confirm that it was an R. Sucks you had to find out like that, with no email. On to the next though!!
Thank you my friend... someday, I’ll be a doctor. Just not through this school I guess. Thank you for your insights and empathy. I’ll see you on the other side! 🙂

Well, my friends... I think I just realized why the rejection. As an OLD non-traditional applicant (lots of life and relevant experience between now and the time I finished college), my prerequisite coursework is too old by FIVE YEARS. Yup. I dug around their website and had missed this fun little fact when I applied: "All academic requirements should be completed prior to matriculation. All prerequisite courses should be completed within five years of application." Arghhh!! 🙁 I getttt it... but isn't that what the MCAT is for/ to demonstrate competency? I mean, I taught myself the science after being out of school for 10 years, so I could do well on my exam. Anyways... I still LOVE the school, and really really hope you all get accepted here!! But if you do... maybe someone could just nudge the admissions committee to make their "notification" method for rejected students a little more compassionate, and a little more... direct. 🙂

Sorry to hear that! Wondering when you were complete?
