2019-2020 Northwestern

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Could someone who's interviewed here talk about how they approached the "dealing with stress" essay? Do they mean short-term stressful situations and steps one would take to navigate such a charged scenario, or more so overarching stressful periods in one's life and day-to-day activities and philosophies one uses to minimize overall stress?

Or anyone who's already submitted the secondary?

Did you guys have to re-sign in after hitting submit? I'm wondering if it makes everyone do that or if it made me do that because I was idle for too long, in which case, the last recorded answers for secondaries may have been incomplete drafts....

Yes! Sign in again thru that page, it’s part of the submission process.

How long do they take to get secondaries to you? I was verified 7/12 and still waiting on them

I was verified on 7/17 and I haven't received mine either, I don't think they screen if that makes you feel any better.

Anyone else having an issue logging into their supplemental? I can get into applyweb but when I attempt to log in to the supplemental app it says "Your login to the Supplemental Application has failed. This could be due to one of the following:".

BTW if you are applying with the waiver peanuttbuttah mentioned, do not submit your supplemental until they tell you it's okay to do so.
Same problem, please tell me how you fixed it

I discussed how I deal with acute and general stress.

I discussed how I deal with acute and general stress.
I just talked about general “this is how I manage stress in general, it is modified in these ways based on what kind of stress it is or the duration.”

hmm guys, how long did it take from when you paid the secondary fee til your status page says "Supplemental received"? I submitted yesterday and got the confirmation email and everything, but my "Supplemental received" box is still not checked yet.

right...did you fill out the MD prompts already? We will be expected to complete both right?

Nope, in previous years the MSTP secondary has been distinct from the MD secondary (see last year’s prompts). Only one question overlaps so definitely do not fill out the MD secondary prompts. I prewrote based on last year’s MSTP prompts so I’ll be v v sad if they change them.

Thank you for clarifying! I will keep this in mind. I applied to them within this last week or so due to the waiver letter, so this thread really helped me catch up on their movements.

Looks like it was this time last year (Monday the 23rd of July last year). So, maybe they are running a bit late.
read this, 12 seconds later get an email notification for an OUWB webinar (not even applying). I hate this lol

Actually, the MSTP prompts are slightly different from last year.

MSTP Prompts (all 200 words):

1) Why did you choose your undergraduate major? How does the subject appeal to you?

2) Name a scientific paper that you have read recently that had a strong impact on you and describe what impact it had.

3) Discuss a current unanswered question in biomedical research that you find particularly interesting and what research you would like to see done to address it.

4) (If applicable): If you have (or expect to have) a year or more between college graduation and medical school matriculation, describe your activities and/or plans.
For REAPPLICANTS: Please also address steps taken to improve your application.

5) Everyone has their own narrative. Please provide more detail about how your experiences would enrich the Northwestern community.

6) What is the most gratifying research experience you have had to date and why? What was the greatest obstacle you had to overcome in research and how did you overcome it?

These are great questions for anyone considering a PhD.

For the Research Experiences section, I worked on three projects with the same lab (and same PI) but with a gap in between each project. Do I consider them all one experience or is each a separate experience? Other schools have been clear as to what they're looking for but I'm not so sure about this one

I haven't had an II for 12 days now and I am worried.
I honestly can't tell if you're joking here or just flaunting your IIs, but please sit down and realize you have two IIs IN JULY. The vast majority of people haven't heard anything yet, have some patience, and be happy with the fact that you have interviews this early.

Oh no, it is a complete and utter joke. I am happy that I have received any II let alone two early on. I know it is just July lol Anyone reading should know that any interview at any time in the cycle is something to be happy with and early interviews do not happen from talent, they happen from sheer luck.

I believe he is joking, friend.

He’s joking lol.

I am currently filling out the MSTP secondary and for the question:

Discuss a current unanswered question in biomedical research that you find particularly interesting and what research you would like to see done to address it.

I am applying for the Health Sciences Integrated PhD through the Health Services and Outcomes Research tract and was wondering if it was alright to answer this question by focusing more on a health-policy area of research I would like to see addressed? I know they asked for "biomedical research", however I am only applying to MD/PhD programs in non-traditional areas (health policy, systems management, etc.), and am not heavily invested in researching basic "biomedical" questions.

Yeah, I think you should cater it to your research interests even if they aren’t “biomedical” in a traditional sense.
