2019-2020 Saint Louis

Does anyone know if St. Louis will my application since I have 88 semester hours of college courses with an additional 12 semester hours of AP credit? I noted on their web site this:

Specific academic requirements to enter the Saint Louis University School of Medicine include a minimum of 90 semester hours (135 quarter hours) in undergraduate arts and science courses.
Virtually all accepted applicants complete a baccalaureate degree of at least 120 semester hours (180 quarter hours) from an accredited college or university. In all cases, our Committee on Admissions is more concerned with the quality of your education than with the number of hours or years of pre-medical training.
If you have received your education abroad, you must complete at least one academic year of science course work in an accredited North American college or university before applying to SLU.
Course Requirements for Admission
  • General biology or zoology (8 credit hours)*
  • General chemistry (8 credit hours)*
  • Organic chemistry (8 credit hours)*
  • Physics (8 credit hours)*
  • English (6 credit hours)
  • Other humanities and behavioral sciences (12 credit hours)
*A laboratory course is required.
The Committee on Admissions usually recognizes undergraduate credit given for advanced placement courses when it is indicated on a transcript. However, for the specific minimum requirements above, advanced placement credits are not generally acceptable. Upper level coursework may be used to fulfill the course requirements.

Ask admissions.

Are you still taking classes?

II! OOS, 518/3.95 GPA, complete 7/1

Yes I'm taking 17 hours in the fall and 16 hours in the spring, so 88 + 33 = 121 hours total by the end of my undergrad school.

So, it states that you need 90 credits to enter SLU. Typically, that means just having 90 credits prior to entering medical school there. They are one of the schools that do not specifically require a bachelor's degree. Since you are taking 33 more credits, you should be fine, but asking admissions is still the best course of action.

for people who got interview invites, do you know what time the interview is? the invitation says 10:40-1pm is the tour and lunch etc. but what about the real interview? I'm OOS and trying to pick a flight back home

They will send you an email once they have assigned you an interviewer and time slot. I got an II yesterday and my interview information today.

Is SLU receptive to in the areas? Also- what days are interviews held?

II, Completly surprised. This was my throw away school to get my app verified before my MCAT score came back. So happy about this!

Congratulations! I’m cautiously hopeful about this school. When were you complete?
Congrats!

2 qs: when were your complete dates, and was this email or portal?
7/2 completed, and sent by email. The interview tab on my portal is now there, but the portal is so slow I can't schedule it haha

Does SLU prioritize volunteering or research more? Also, what is the
student life like. Do students support one another honestly? Thank you!
I would say the school has a lot of community service/volunteer opportunities in really cool areas, more so than the research opportunities they have. However, students can also do research at WashU and get the same course credit here, which makes the lesser emphasis on research negligible.

Our classmates are really supportive of each other! The first two years are true pass/fail and everyone shares resources and notes that they find helpful. Overall the student life allows for a good balance between studying/taking breaks and it is a very manageable workload with the curriculum design. Hope this helps!

I'm still working on this crazy essay. Did you all use a diversity essay, a "why our school" essay, an autobiography, or what for this St Louis very generic 10,000 char essay? Just trying to see what they want.

Current SLU student, feel free to ask any questions!
what is your favorite and least favorite thing about the school?
how is your academic/life balance?
What is your favorite thing to do in Saint Louis?

I actually took that as a "write whatever you would like here but it does not nearly have to be 10,000 characters we're just making the character count really big." .... but maybe I was wrong. I just did a short why SLU.

I would say my favorite thing is the administration. From day 1 they are very warm and welcoming and understand that for a lot of students, almost everything in med school is new to them, so they emphasize a lot of wellness and making sure study/life balance is where it should be. Most people usually have plenty of time to do outside things (gym, cook, etc) and hang out on the weekends while still getting all their work done. My least favorite thing isn't too big of a deal but the school isn't always the best with technology. With recording lectures, setting up accounts and stuff, it can sometimes be all over the place, but it usually is fixed.

I'm new to St. Louis, but so far it's been pretty cool. All the museums/parks/attractions are free and the nightlife is decent!

So I have a question about interviews, how many people usually interview in a given day? Are the tour and lunch pretty low-key?

II! Complete 7/1. On MSAR it says the interview is a single one on one interview. Im assuming this is traditional interview format?
I interviewed here last year and it is a single one on one interview for about 30 min. However, mine lasted over an hour. I interviewed super late and was waitlisted.

What happens on Labor day? I am planning to submit my final secondary on 9/4 per my current schedule, but should I try to reel that back in to 11:59 PM Eastern time on 9/2 or by 7 AM Eastern time on 9/3, or is the rule just in general to get secondaries submitted by Labor day? I'm half way through submitting secondaries to 20 schools and I've of course saved the longest ones for last, but hopefully I'll get signficant reuse out of my first 10 schools in final 10 still to go, but if there is a key milestone date such as Labor day and I need to rein in my schedule a bit, better to know now.

The storied quote for what is considered early by schools in terms of applying to their medical colleges is that you do it before labor day and you're gucci. I dont believe the quote implies a super hard deadline because no one is actually going to start reviewing harder on labor day itself. I figure its a gradient. At the end of the day focus on the quality of those secondaries before their speed but dont dillydally either I'd assume

Just added this school today. For the anything else essay, did anyone use their autobiography for another school? Or were most of yours a diversity/why this school essay? Thanks!! Good luck everyone!

I didn't use the Vandy essay but that isn't a bad idea. Maybe I should, because Vandy was a MONSTER at 1200 words. I figure I have about a 5% shot as an OOS candidate but couldn't resist applying to Vandy given its in my neck of the woods and is an up and coming Ivy or near Ivy med school.

I put a short “why slu” paragraph and I got an II last week.
