2019-2020 Stanford

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just spent way to much time on last year's thread...in case anybody was wondering, they continued sending out IIs until at least February and acceptances didn't start coming out until then as well. It's gonna be a long, agonizing cycle (if I don't get rejected early...)

BUT I CAN STAY HOPEFUL

I appreciate your effort

When you came to the conclusion of interview invites being sent out "until at least February", did you notice a considerable amount being sent until at least Feb or were there only 1-2 people in Feb while the vast majority were out in Sept/Oct? My response to the "chill bro they interview until Feb" is that...yeah sure, they do interview in Feb, but it doesn't inspire any confidence that the 30 people interviewing in Feb are fighting for 2 spots leftover from the hundreds upon hundreds that interviewed in Sept/Oct (or even Nov)

Stanford starts admitting people in November which should be part of the consideration. Ivies wait until March or at least February (Columbia is so special).

I have no idea how many spots were left for the February interviews. Someone on the thread said/hypothesized that no one who interviews gets flat out rejected, they go on the wait list. I also have no idea if that's true.

That said, there seemed to be 3 different cycles for IIs: Sept-early Oct, Dec-early Jan, and February. This is all just based on my quick read-through of the thread.

Cool, that’s what I was wondering. Thanks again!

So did Stanford change their policy officially?

EDIT: MD Admissions timeline

January - March: Offers of admission are sent on three release dates

Every cycle is different. I wouldn’t agonize too much over this or when IIs will come out. Nobody knows and what happened last year means little to nothing, to be completely honest. Just be patient and hope for the best.

Stanford does only open up a few days at a time so for the sake of your own blood pressures I advise signing up as soon as you get an II and moving your other IIs after the fact if you indeed have conflicts.

On your II day you will receive very clear information about what to expect after the interview.

Been reading some Stanford vs. _____ threads and it seems everyone thinks Palo alto is a negative. Why? There is so much nature just 10 minutes away, hiking/trail running/biking. Is the town really that boring otherwise? Stanford football games must be cool, too. This confuses me. Isnt downtown SF just 45 minutes away?

Quite boring unless you go to SF or surrounding major cities. Also, some people might not like the "well-off/wealthy people everywhere around me" vibe. (just my thoughts though)

I live close to Palo Alto and I like it.

Anyone hear back from the student hosts yet? Also, how many people do they interview each day?

There is not much to do in Palo Alto outside of eating and going to like 2 or 3 bars. Palo Alto is also incredibly expensive so most of your activities will boil down to eating out or drinking, which is difficult to do often on a student budget. The surrounding areas are gorgeous though. If you enjoy hiking/nature there are amazing trails less than half an hour away from campus. Most trails require you to drive to them, so if you have a car or hiking enthusiast buddy with one then you are set. The city (San Francisco) is also a 45 min - 1 hour train ride/drive away depending on which train you take or time of the day. The issue is that, just like Palo Alto, San Francisco is incredibly expensive and everything aside from walking around or hanging out in Dolores Park requires money. San Jose is a bit closer (40 - 30 minutes drive, 45 train), but there isn't much to do there other than eating/drinking.

I think the difficult part is getting off campus, even if you are just going to Palo Alto to eat/drink. Campus is massive and it definitely has a bubble effect that keeps many people in. This is mostly due to most students (grad and undergrad) living on campus and honestly campus having lots of activities you can do (2 gyms, pretty to walk around, like 4 museums, a hiking trail nearby, etc...). Can't talk much about sporting events because I don't like attending them, but as a Stanford student you get tickets for free (or VERY reduced price) for virtually anything happening on campus.

Hi, I just wanted to call the admissions office to check on something related to timelines/my application, and in the past week, no one has answered.
email-no reply.
Has anyone ever been able to reach them over the phone and what times are best to call?

+1 - n=1, but the majority of the people I know that live in Palo Alto and surrounding areas are students, married, and/or old. It's basically the suburbs. I know some people in tech who live there, but most of my tech friends insist on living as close to SF as possible and taking public transport or their company's shuttle to their jobs outside of SF. It's all REALLY friggin expensive (even compared to LA).

Did they send you an automated email response? TBH, they're probably crazy busy right now. I'm guessing their undergrad staff hasn't even started yet, because they're a quarter system school. Maybe that's why it's so hard to reach them?

When I emailed them, it just went into the wind. No reply back.
But calling is even worse bc I have tried calling several times now and left a voicemail as well

That is odd. Is it something we can help answer?

Nobody answered my call either, but I received a reply to my email on the same day.

Guess they passed me lol

Similar stats/WARS and few days earlier complete
I have a lower LizzyM higher wars complete a few days later and I am a KH applicant. So maybe they’re coming up on me? If I don’t hear anything soon, I am just going to assume that KH applicants get looked at later.

Anyone know if MSTP has started sending II's? They ghosted my email and phone call

They have. Before you panic, it wont make a difference if you interview on the first day or the last day. There will be other times. I wouldnt call or e-mail about the status of your app at this point either, way too early. Emails will take a few days to respond to as its a very busy time right now here.

I’m sorry y’all are having a hard time reaching people. I think email will continue to be the best way although it may take a week or longer. The reality is that at this particular point in the cycle there are probably around 4-5,000 applicants under consideration and only a small number of admissions staff who are all currently busy coordinating the first interview days later this month. I hope it runs smoother. I’ll ask around for y’all KH folx.

Ok so asked some people who know more about this than I do and the consensus is that they think both processes will go along independently and if you get far enough in the KH process they will solicit input from your graduate program (in most of your cases, the med school) to aid in your evaluation. That doesn’t answer the question “so will we hear back later or no?” but I think you can be assured that your KH application won’t delay the review of your med school application and, conversely, what the KH thinks of you won’t change the evaluation the MD and/or MSTP committees have of you but their evaluation will impact your KH evaluation.

What I do know for the MSTP in particular is that the MD committee must give the initial OK for the MSTP to be able to interview. Some on the physician scientist forum have already reported that Stanford MSTP has contacted them and let them know they won’t be interviewing them but will be moved to MD - “ only” consideration. If you have not heard either way this likely means that a decision has not been made either way on your app.
