2019-2020 Tulane

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When did you submit your secondary and how many days did it take before it was marked "under review"?

Does anyone else have a red check mark next to "in progress" even though everything else is green? I apologize if this was already asked.. I'm not going to go through 14 pages of forums. Submitted 7/21

Anyways, its not a ****ing rejection lmao. youll know loud and clear when that comes

I got it and I’m not complete yet. Still waiting on letters. :/

submitted 7/10 and im also waiting ):
Likely in part because of this forum, I'll bet this school gets the biggest load of applications early on of any because applicants know how much they love their early submissions. I'm sure it'll start moving more quickly before too long

do we know if they send out II one by one or in waves? it seems to me like when one person gets an II from tulane, a bunch of other people do as well but idk if that’s just me

Yea I think people send in their secondaries to tulane quicker and quicker each year as word spreads. It's just frustrating because there are people who submitted a week or two after me who have received II or complete emails Dx

I also imagine that they don't go over apps in chronological order. So don't fret! They might just have not gone over yours yet (or mine hopefully haha)

Yea they definitely are not..

Just got the secondary this morning (lol) but I had a quick question for those who answered this question:

Are you currently volunteering abroad or have you volunteered abroad?

How much do you think Tulane will frown upon if I talked about going on a medical mission trip for a week during college (medical tourism/volunteerism)? Should I try to include or not bother trying to stretch... Thanks!

I would not mention it 1) bc it’s medical tourism and 2) you did it for only one week

Is lying to medical schools smart?

I mentioned my one week trip and I received an II. Just a thought.

I hardly think this would be "lying"...that's a little harsh. Hardly a lie, when it is actually what you did. These types of trips are created for volunteer experiences. I think they are actually what the school is asking about. You could have gone to South Beach or Sandals for the week with your friends, but you chose to do that instead. Include it if it was meaningful to you. And the issue of only a week...I see people describing their oh-so-meaningful week of shadowing a doctor as their inspiration... so I think it's fine.

If a school asks if you volunteered abroad, and you did, and you exclude that, that is lying. That's pretty cut and dry.

I think I might be able to offer a little insight into this. Tulane is really into global health, which involves (but is not limited to) international aid. In the world of international aid, week-long "voluntourism" trips are notorious for being all about the volunteer and not really impacting target communities. I'm not trying to weigh into whether or not this is true, just stating the reality that I've seen, which is that trips like these are pretty universally disdained by a group of professionals to which at least one Tulane ADCOM is likely to belong. For this reason, I think @jshin0518 might want to think twice before including it. All this being said, @batpuac said they included their similar experience and still got an II so it likely wouldn't be a deal-breaker.

Thanks to everyone for the insightful feedback, really appreciate it! I know some schools do not like medical tourism at all, so I was trying to see if Tulane is one of them. On the other hand, I don't want to be viewed as someone who lied about not doing global volunteer work if such a week thing was. I think I will include it, but I will not glean too much.

I've been busy with other secondaries and I'm circling back to Tulane. My letters are in, but is it even worth submitting the secondary at this point?

still waiting for that complete and under review ): submitted 7/10...
