2019-2020 Utah

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied, interviewed, and got the r in 2018 and I was able to get some good feedback from Dr. Chan. I didn’t go to the U for undergrad so I had to go through my advisor, but I did get some good info!
Awesome, thank you!

If I interviewed back in October, are my chances pretty close to zero if I haven’t heard back? I’m getting the vibe that most people who are accepted hear back 1.5-2 months after their interview.

I interviewed in September and I also feel the same way. I’ve read the threads from the past few years and it seems that those who interviewed earlier on and haven’t heard in March are either waitlisted or rejected.

Hopefully that is just due to incomplete data here on SDN.

I think “close to zero” is a little pessimistic. Anecdotally, I know a handful of people who interviewed in the fall and were straight up accepted in March in previous years. They were in state though.

Hahaha you could definitely call me a pessimist at this point. And really? Well I’m In-state, so that gives me a little more hope, albeit an incredibly small amount. Haha

Hey no judgement, it’s taking a lot for me to be optimistic... but yeah my brother is a student here, third year. A lot of people in his class interviewed early, radio silence until March, then got the big A. I do feel like they try to fill those OOS spots earlier though so if one of us is toast it’s me but I can’t even bare to think that, the U is home! We only have a few more weeks of this torture though, we’ve got this.

Totally! If we suffer to the end, at least we suffer together!

Withdrawing my A here (OOS with Utah HS). Sad I won’t be classmates with you all, but happy for one of you deserving people to get my spot!! Students at the U are some of the happiest I’ve met 🙂
You're an angel. Good luck on your future endeavors!

Anyone currently accepted willing to share #of people in the Facebook group? Would be curious to see how much it’s gone up over the past couple months.

Does the facebook group indicate if people are OOS/IS/ etc...? Just got accepted to UNM (my home state) but I'm still holding out on that Utah acceptance

No. People talk about it a bit but there are no labels or anything.

Feeling a bit anxious and neurotic today (surprise surprise) so decided to do some digging. Unfortunately last year's Facebook group only got to 68 members by March 15th. So the fact that we are already at 71 is very discouraging and suggests that the class is almost full.

From the limited information I can obtain from SDN, there were acceptances sent out all the way till mid to late February, and then silence until mid-March. I only saw ONE acceptance in March, and the Facebook group barely fluctuated at all during that time. The week of March 15th, at least last year, was mass rejection/waitlist time.

Basically I'm going to hold out hope for another week and then assume its A-list or rejection after that. So, so thankful to have an acceptance elsewhere this time around. What a process.

Those are some high level investigation skills you have there. I’d imagine that almost all students that plan on attending the U and have received an acceptance have joined the FB page. There is not a lot happening on the page so far. Dr Chan chimes in every once in a while but that’s mostly it. There are probably some in the FB group that are holding out for other offers and some that don’t want to join for the same reason. You might not have seen movement last year because those who were accepted don’t want to make others feel bad and don’t mention it as well. When I got my acceptance call, I didn’t mention it here for a long time for that reason so I imagine others feel the same.

Appreciate the reply. There are a million reasons why people would or would not join the FB group, and clearly I'm oversimplifying what could be going on. I guess I'm just trying to satiate my mind being anxious about all the unknowns. I think it's unfortunate how much is kept behind the curtain. I understand the reasoning and can appreciate it but would simply prefer a more transparent application process.

The other school keeping me up at night at least discloses waitlist rank. Are there any reasons for a school not to do that? All it does is help us plan our lives...I need to know whether or not to renew my lease by the end of March...

I honestly don't know. The only reasoning I can think of is that the number taken off the waitlist fluctuates each year and they don't want to give anyone a false sense of security. But that's a pretty horrible excuse for not just letting us know... We're all adults here.

AMEN. 100% agree!

I knew two people last year that were accepted, but who didn’t know that there was a Facebook page until I mentioned it to them. I would imagine that there are at least a couple people who haven’t realized that it exists.

Isn’t it said that 2/3 of all acceptances get handed out in March?

Check the last two years’ threads. It seems as though they no longer keep to that tradition. And fortunately, during my interview date in September they didn’t make it sound like that would be the case. Most people hear back 1-3 months after their interview. Of course, there may be exceptions come March, but they’ll probably be exceptions and not the norm.

I agree. I think that if we haven't heard back yet, we should expect an R or WL come mid-march (unless you recently interviewed)

At my interview (which was 4 months ago so it’s starting to fade) I feel like they still said most people will be accepted in March! But yeah, everyone is right.

I think you mean to say most people that are accepted hear back 1-3 months after. The rest of us.... most likely SOL.

Have y'all heard of anyone being rejected post interview prior to mid March?

Thanks for catching that—definitely what I meant.

I’ve never heard of post-II rejections prior to mid-March. I have heard of one waitlist that came out the first week of March but it was only one person. Super weird.

Man, I would love to poke their brains on why they keep the bottom 50% or so ranked applicants in the running and not just outright reject them. If we are ranked and obviously stand no chance why drag us along. Last year I liked to think that I was still being considered, but I feel like that's not the case for the majority of us that get rejected.

Yeah I need to know if I should be polishing up my application for this summer 😒

I'm in the same boat and honestly, I would start polishing it up now so that you aren't stressing to get it done on the June 1st deadline. That's what I'm doing at least.

Edit: May 1st and then June 1st will be here before we know it.

I interviewed at the beginning of January and am being neurotic. I just wanna move on to the next stage of my life, lol. Anyway, have many people who interviewed in January heard back yet and if so, does that mean I didnt make it?

I know two people who interviewed in Jan and both were told they would hear back March 15th. This peaked my interest since last year there was literally only one acceptance that came out in March (granted, SDN under-representation may be partially to blame).

It certainly looks like people who interviewed around that same time have heard by now. It doesn't mean you didn't make it, but it means you're not in the percentile where they automatically accept applicants. You're probably with us waiting till March.

I was there last year with y'all. I absolutely second TheBigRic. If you don't have an acceptance now, get going ASAP on trying to polish/revise/improve your application. I tried to cram a ton of stuff in when I realized in March 2019 that I was likely not going to med school that fall, and ended up being several months late this cycle. Don't be me!!

Were you January 6th or after that? I think maybe last week’s As were January 6th people

I had my first rejection today from a DO school 🙁. I'm now waiting for the U anxiously though seems like another rejection is coming.

Is it just me or is CYMS option not available for Utah? In your AMCAS portal can you select Utah as the option you Plan to Enroll in?

What?! I started getting rejections like the first week. You must have committed no sins in your undergrad.

LOL not really. I only interviewed at a DO school and Utah. Trying to remain positive but it's so hard
